Step right up, step right up – as part of the ongoing Omenpath Reconciliation Program, we welcome you to Tarkir and have set up a system for those of you trying to integrate into our plane. It’s a very rigid, hardcore system, very wise and intelligent. It’s, uh… six questions. Look, we’ve been busy fighting off dragons, we don’t really have time for big trials or essays about your childhood.

All can succumb to poison and rot — even a dragon.

Dragons are fast, but lightning is faster.

I believe fighting fire with fire is the wisest choice.

Art club, where I could express myself and work to perfect my craft.

Chess club allowed me to bond and learn with others while showing my individual skill.

A community rec center, playing and bonding with other kids my age.

Quiz bowl, learning as much as I could and competing with others.

…What’s a curricular? I played in the woods after school.

We were troublemakers, my friends and I — the powers-that-be drove us out.

My family was suffocating — I want a place where I can be free of those obligations.

I was haunted by my past and the poor future it promised.

My situation was stifling — I need some place where I can thrive.

I run from nothing — I was escorted here. In chains.

Hope you’ve got good shoes on, pal, cuz the Mardu don’t stop running until they’re dead! At least you have a shot at dashing around on a huge cat, if you don’t mind everyone tossing lightning around like frisbees. Be careful if someone says they need to mobilize you, I hear those soldiers don’t stick around for very long. If you’re not interested in the fighting, don’t worry – they have need for scouts, merchants, and all kinds of travelers. Enjoy the sights and the chance to brave new challenges in a community both tight-knit and widespread.

Join the Mardu

You’ll need a better coat, friend, because the Temur are right for you. You’ll have a lot of time to meditate amongst the shamans who speak with the ancestors, or you may prefer to go wrestling with the crew in preparation for dragon attacks. If dragons seem like too big a hunting target, there’s always bears. Maybe start small with an elk. Let ‘em know if you took band in high school! They’re always looking for ferocious drummers or someone able to harmonize on a harp.

Join the Temur

Better grab a nice hat and something to cover your mouth before journeying into the Abzan’s lands. They’re always in need of soldiers and farmers alike, but if you’ve got an artsy side, they love glassblowers and carpet-weavers. Don’t worry about fitting in – most of their families are made up of at least three different species. You’ll have to endure a lot to stay, but if you can outlast the challenges, well, you can certainly count on a long, happy life. A happy death, too, if you get to bind to a Kin-Tree.

I hope you didn’t skip leg day, because the Jeskai have some serious kick. The monks are usually up in the mountains or in their airship, but if you’re afraid of heights, you have plenty of options as a citizen in their lands. They need plenty of people working the rice paddies and lotus fields. If you’re committed to working on your martial and mental prowess, expect your mornings to be a flurry of activity followed by long bouts of meditation, with maybe some friendly games of orjsu ball in the evening.

Look alive, buddy, or at least a little less dead – the Sultai line is over there. Don’t worry about the weird zombie at the front, it’s from Innistrad. The Sultai balance life and death, so they work with corpses aplenty, but respectfully these days. They’re not all doom and gloom; their gardens and animal husbandry is focused on beauty as well as function. I hear the floral competitions get fierce, but no one’s died… yet. If yardwork isn’t your thing, they have jewelry makers and big, dancing festivals to look forward to throughout the year. The Sultai have a big emphasis on delving into their history and helping with… if not fresh starts, then a renewed one!
