My fiancé, Stephen, collects a lot of things. His biggest collection is Power Rangers. He has the original Thunder Megazord and it's battered—but surprisingly not that battered—green box.
I helped him carry a five-story, black shelf up the stairs so he could have a shelf dedicated to displaying not only the unboxed figures, but their boxes.
While writing this article article I asked him which of his Power Rangers figures were original versus Legacy—a rereleasing of old Power Rangers figurines strictly for collecting. The way his eyes lit up, that small grin across his face.
I became a little obsessed with that smile, that desire to collect. See, I don't really collect anything. I keep my Magic cards in a sleeve, yes, but I have no intention of selling them.
I only buy them for functionality. I don't pick the fancy arts 99% of the time. Sometimes I run full art lands, but mainly for the uniformity. I've recently moved to basic lands that all look the same. It's cheaper.

I don't get foils unless I need the card and it's the only printing available. I don't like the way the light reflects off them into my eyes.
The art is hidden under the opulence, the flecks of silver and gold. It shines differently from its plain, flat, non-foil sisters. I want to understand a desire for this. I want to want to try to collect.
<h2>What is a Collection?</h2>
I told Stephen I didn't understand collections. I'd tried collecting coins and foreign money when I was a kid. I'd tried buying a few magic cards for their art, but ultimately, I didn't get any sort of thrill.
I've always been practical, only owning things I needed. I moved across the US multiple times with only the things I could pack into my car.
Stephen raised his eyebrow to my concept of a collection. He argued even two or three things could be a collection. I rejected this immediately, laughing, but then I became sort of interested.

I had a hard time finding an article that talks about "a collection" in a strict sense. Yes Merriam-Webster gave me something:
"something collected especially : an accumulation of objects gathered for study, comparison, or exhibition or as a hobby"
Could three cards in my hoard of practicality make me a collector? <a href="https://www.mollymendoza.com/">Molly Mendoza</a>'s <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Myrel, Shield of Argive" href="#" target="_blank">Myrel, Shield of Argive</a> from a Secret Lair, <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Dollmaker&#039;s Shop//Porcelain Gallery" href="#" target="_blank">Dollmaker&#039;s Shop//Porcelain Gallery</a> by <a href="https://cachorubione.com/">Cacho Rubione</a> from Duskmourn: House of Horror, and <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Titania, Protector of Argoth" href="#" target="_blank">Titania, Protector of Argoth</a> from Modern Horizons 2 by <a href="https://iriscompiet.art/">Iris Compiet</a> are enough to make me a collector?
It didn't feel right. There was a rite of passage, and itching obsession that I found prevailed the community of collectors.

I looked up a few collections and stumbled across <a href="https://www.atlasobscura.com/places/klown-doll-museum">this</a>: "Plainview, Nebraska’s Klown Doll Museum is exactly what its name promises. Inside, nearly 8,000 clown dolls line shelves, fill display cases, and peer out from every corner.
Some are cheerful and brightly painted, while others lean toward the eerie, with frozen expressions that seem to follow you as you move through the space." This is what I figured was a collection. Or more relatably, a shelf full of Megazords and Tigerzords.
I tried looking up the legal definition. I was sure lawyers had ironed out if you can write it off for insurance purposes. I got trapped in the hole of "collections law" which is about taking money from people when they don't pay their debts.
I eventually found on <a href="https://www.allstate.com/collectibles-insurance">Allstate website</a> that, "Eligible collectors with qualifying items worth at least $15,000 can own a policy, and there is no value maximum." I didn't like this definition either.
Stephen's Power Rangers' collection might be worth maybe 3K according to him. That seems like a gulf in expectations.
It feels like lawyers had simply decided whether something was worth their time to take to court, not what something was actually considered.

<h2>The Urge of Collection</h2>
Alexander Mitchell wrote an article titled, "<a href="https://alexander-mitchell.medium.com/the-psychology-of-collecting-why-some-people-love-to-collect-ceb7a778db77">The Psychology of Collecting: Why Some People Love to Collect</a>." He said some of the reasons were the thrill of the hunt, nostalgia, sentimental value, completionism, community, a desire to display, investment, escapism, identity, and even a desire for control.
Maybe I was wrong. Maybe my three cards could be a collection. It seems small, but the reason I had them matched Stephen's reasons—matched some of Mitchell's reasons.
I felt an emotional connection to these arts. I liked the colors, the expression of line work. I liked <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Wedding Ring" href="#" target="_blank">Wedding Ring</a> by <a href="https://www.targeteart.com/">J.P. Targete</a>—talking about it at length in <a href="https://www.coolstuffinc.com/a/cashinds-seo-03022026-teenage-mutant-ninja-turtles-food-chain-and-magics-aesthetic">my article about Magic art</a>, but I don't own that version.
Maybe I should allow myself. Maybe it's stubbornness, trauma that keeps me from holding something in my hands just to admire its beauty.

On Allstate's website, in a particularly small font, it mentioned that while policies for insuring collections are available for a wide range of collections, "Items with non-market value and items for everyday use do not qualify for collectibles insurance."
Do we collect because they're valuable?

In the tenth place, <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Phoenix Heart" href="#" target="_blank">Phoenix Heart</a>, is what the average cost of a brand new 2027 model car is. My current car is estimated as being worth less than 2K. I thought about this for a while.
The difference between The 1/1 One Ring and the <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Black Lotus" href="#" target="_blank">Black Lotus</a> Autographed Alpha is 1.2 million dollars. If I added up every dollar I've ever earned in my whole life without taxes, it would have been less than the <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Black Lotus" href="#" target="_blank">Black Lotus</a> Autographed Alpha.
I think back to the $3,000 Stephen spent to have his collection and something feels wrong with equating these things with numbers. Stephen and I once drove for two hours one way to pick up Legacy Edition Black and Gold Dragonzord. I love long drive with him.
We'd laugh and sing and pick up food. It was an adventure. He would tell me about how when he was a kid he'd play with the original Power Rangers, that they were gone now, lost to the inevitability of getting older, lost to the lack of attention and love of a child.
The cost of his collection didn't matter, I think. It could be an investment yes, but when he reverently holds them in his hands it's not because he wants to lose them again.

The thing that never puzzled me about collection was condition. Stephen stared at his original Thunder Megazord, running his fingers over the smooth surfaces, talking about its condition. Immaculate. I was the same with my cards. I wanted to keep them immaculate.
The first ever <a href="https://www.youtube.com/@RhysticStudies">Rhystic Studies</a> video I ever watched was, "<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=efpPygoqb9M">Dear Gonti, Love Sophie</a>." It was a discussion on the emphasis we put on the idea of damage to our Magic cards, how we treat things we adore. I was moved by this idea.
What becomes of a deck that we protect? What is its function anymore? Sam (Rhystic Studies) says pristine cards, "ha[ve] no memory or sentiment."
When I think about the creases of smile lines on my face, the wrinkles on my brow, I feel like they tell others about how I love to laugh, like to think.
I want to know what cards do, in the bends and the tears with their use. Is this what a collection should be, a display of experience and time?

I have two cards framed on the wall of my apartment. One is an oversized <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Kynaios and Tiro of Meletis" href="#" target="_blank">Kynaios and Tiro of Meletis</a> from the Stalwart Unity precon from 2016.
It was my first precon and for 10 years I've kept that oversized card in somewhat pristine condition. I feel a connection to it, but I hadn't thought to put it up on display. Stephen had, finding it lingering in a binder somewhere. So, I put it up and forgot to look at it often.
The other card framed on my wall was my <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Prosper, Tome-Bound" href="#" target="_blank">Prosper, Tome-Bound</a>. It has this crease on the bottom from me putting away cards too quickly, crushing him underneath. I never replaced it until my friend <a href="https://linktr.ee/Reversalwizrd">ReversalWizrd</a> bought me the Prosper Secret Lair.
I'd spoke so highly of this deck that he bought it for me when I couldn't get it myself. But, I didn't want to get rid of the original. I wanted to display its crease. It sits above my desk.

Sam mentioned in his video that, "Keeping everything immaculate is a fools errand," but I'd go further. Keeping things immaculate is an adult's desire, it's a look into the future.
It's a way of keeping value for selling later instead of gripping onto the now. It's the prediction of separation, the expectation of loss. Children scrape up their toys, play with them, love them. They couldn't imagine the future, when they'd lose this joy.
I think about how much it might overjoy Stephen to hold his original toy, hold the one that he went to sleep with, opened on Christmas.
Sam said, "I've been reflecting on everything that I own. From my cameras to my books to my clothes and my guitars, all of my favorite things tend to be those that bear some sign of use," unsleeving his <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Ruric Thar, the Unbowed" href="#" target="_blank">Ruric Thar, the Unbowed</a> deck and riffle shuffling it.

I'm not going to stop sleeving my decks, but I think I might stop and wonder about the history of a card that I buy with a ding or dent.
I'll think about DJ from Sam's video and how he "instead... uses his cards as they were intended to be used in an almost aggressive way."

Everything on Archidekt is easily accessible from the home page. Logging into the site replaces the Register link with your user name in the top right corner. Clicking your user name accesses features and controls specific to your account.

The username menu contains quick links to start something new, work on your existing projects, or manage your profile.
The left side of the top menu provides links to card search, as well as all the main site pages.
The Decks button opens a list of links to your decks, public decks, and decks other users invited you to collaborate on.
This menu also shortcuts to making a new deck or comparing existing decks.

The other links on the top menu include the card search, site news, your collection, and the public forums.
Moving down the home page, you'll see a mix of personal and public content. The home search bar can find cards, decks, and users. Below the home page search bar, you can see tabs for My Stuff and Community Stuff.
My Stuff displays your most recently updated decks, site news, decks from users you follow, your card packages, other decks you've viewed, and feature voting.
Community Stuff populates new and trending things on Archidekt. This page is a snapshot of what your fellow brewers are up to.
Look at recent decks by other users, see which cards are heating up, and check the pulse on popular deck tags.
You'll also find a showcase of the finalists and submissions from <a href="https://edhrec.com/articles/archidekt-deckbuilding-contest-december-2025" target="_blank" rel="noopener">recent deckbuilding competitions</a>, which are open every month to Archidekt users!

<h3>Make a New Deck</h3>
Archidekt provides several avenues to create a new deck on the site.
For starters, there's a big New deck button on the home page.
Atop every page on the site, the pop-up Decks menu and user name menu both have a new deck link.

The deck creation page features several options.
Fill out each field, and select preferences. If the chosen format uses a commander, you may pre-select that card here.
Regardless of deck format, you can add card packages, choose a destination folder, and pick card categories to jump-start your build.
<h3>Clone an Existing Deck</h3>
You may copy another deck to create a new deck in your profile.
When viewing a deck page that belongs to another user, the Clone deck button is near the top of the page on the left.
If you want to clone your own deck, the Clone deck button is in the Extras menu.

The deck cloning feature allows you to rename the copy, choose a destination folder, and select preferences specific to how the deck will appear to you and others.

For every deck, there is an individual deck page.
The deck page visualizes your deck and gives you the controls to build and playtest it.
It's your deck; Archidekt's tools and features are flexible so you can build your way.

From the top, the deck page includes basic information about the deck. A red "Errors" next to the format indicates the deck is not legal for the chosen format. Clicking on Errors will display a pop-up with an explanation of each error that must be corrected to make a legal deck.
Next, give a deck a thumbs up if you like it. This row includes links to Share, Bookmark, and Collaborate. The eyeball indicates how many times a deck has been viewed by anyone other than the owner.
Finally, some buttons that actually do something. The first two buttons on the deck page are Import cards and Extras.

The options in Deck settings give you direct control over what your deck is and how people interact with it. You may change the deck's name, format, accessibility, and various organizational preferences.

The simplest option here is the Quick add mode, which adds cards by name without any other specificity. You can preselect categories and automatically filter for format legality. Additionally, you can refine this search bar through Detailed add or Syntax modes.

The card search is modal; simple, advanced, and syntax options give you control of how you find and add cards for your deck.
Archidekt's search tools use <a href="http://scryfall.com" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Scryfall</a>, giving you access to the most powerful Magic card database without jumping between screens or tabs.
If you prefer to use Scryfall directly, you can drag and drop card images from Scryfall into your deck on Archidekt. Drag and drop also works from EDHREC.
<h3>Card Packages</h3>
Archidekt's <a href="http://archidekt.com/card-packages" target="_blank" rel="noopener">card packages</a> are a great way to accelerate your deckbuilding process. Any user may create a card package, similar to creating a deck. You may add packages in the new deck screen, or later through the Extras menu.
<h3>Tools for Commander</h3>
Commander decks on Archidekt gain access to special card search tools powered by EDHREC and <a href="http://commanderspellbook.com" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Commander Spellbook</a>.

The EDH Recs tab queries EDHREC for cards based on your commander and the cards already in your deck.
The Landbase tab shows you land cards based on popularity or cycle, all within your commander's color identity.
The Combos tab finds complete and partial combos in your deck, to help you power up your combo game, or tailor your deck's <a href="https://edhrec.com/articles/edhrec-guide-to-commander-brackets" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Bracket level</a>.

These functions on the top right side of deck page change the way you see a deck. These tools are visual only, and work independently for each user.
Any user can change the view, group, sort, price, and filters on any deck page without affecting what other users see.

<h3>View</h3>
Four viewing options allow you to see cards the way you prefer.
The default is Stacks, and the other options are Text, Grid, and Table.
View settings further improve the visual experience by adjusting card image size, margins, and other details.
<h3>Group by</h3>
The Group function changes how the cards are lumped together.
The default categories will display cards in groups by their primary assigned category.
There are many other grouping options to help you see the deck from different perspectives.
<h3>Sort by</h3>
This function changes how cards are organized within a group.
The default is alphabetical, and there are 16 other sorting options.
You may also toggle between ascending and descending order for sorting.
<h3>Price source</h3>
This data is useful if you plan to purchase cards through a particular online marketplace, or if you're building with a budget restriction.
Archidekt shows you two price sources for comparison.
<h3>Deck filter</h3>
This little text field packs a lot of power for how you view your deck.
In the simplest terms, you may enter a card name to find it in the deck without manually scrolling.
Typing a card name into the deck filter removes all other cards from view.
Clicking the plus icon presents you with additional filter options, such as card type, color tag, and collection status, among others.
Clicking the cog icon allows you to toggle from this "Local filter" to "Syntax filter."
The "Syntax filters" accepts Scryfall's robust syntax terms to tune the viewed portion of a deck.
For example, the syntax "o:target" will show only cards with the word "target" in the rules text.

Every card in a deck has a few buttons for managing the card.

In the top left, the Color tag button also shows the card quantity. You can use default color tags or make your own.
On the right side of the card image, the + and - buttons increase or decrease card quantity.

Pinning a card saves it for later use in a visual clipboard. There are multiple ways to pin a card.
Right-clicking on a card image, or selecting the three-dot menu below a card image opens an action menu.

The hot key "W" works to pin a card when the menu is open, and when your cursor is hovering over a card. You can also pin cards while viewing the card details screen.

You may access your pinned cards via the Pin icon in the top right corner of the screen, next to the Bell icon for alerts. If you hover a cursor over a card you already pinned, a green pin appears on the card's left edge. Clicking a green Pin icon also opens the pinned cards screen.

On the pinned cards page, you can add notes to individual cards via card details. Click the arrow button along the right side of each card to view the card details. The pinned cards menu includes the same filters available on the deck page, along with a variety of sort options.

You can add Pinned cards to any of your decks via the card details menu. You can also drag and drop pinned cards into a deck you’re actively working on. The Extras button at the top of the pinned cards menu allows you to buy your pinned cards from select vendors, remove all pinned cards, add all pinned cards to a deck, or create a new deck using your pinned cards. A maximum of 150 cards can be pinned at a time.

Archidekt's Playtester is the best way to test a deck without the physical cards.
You may playtest your own decks, public decks, or decks in the sandbox.
Test out your theory crafting, try that Commander precon before you buy it, or take another player's deck for a spin.

There are two main ways to access the Playtester.
Click the three dots on any deck thumbnail to see your options, including Playtest deck. This link skips the deck page and opens the Playtester directly.

<h3>The Tool Bar</h3>
Along the bottom of the page, the tool bar displays information about the game state.
The user may track turn count, life total, poison, experience, mana, and energy.
The menus on this tool bar access the Playtester settings.
<h3>Basic Gameplay</h3>
You can drag and drop cards between zones.
Right-click or hold a tap on a card to open a menu with more options that are relevant to the zone the card currently occupies.
For example, you may open a menu on a card in hand for options such as playing tapped or discarding.

You may handle any number of card-specific game actions in the play area. Tap or untap, copy permanents, add or remove counters through the card menus or hotkeys.

Archidekt allows you to manage your collection with integrated tools to keep track of the exact editions and physical condition of any card.
Much like a deck, your collection can be searched, sorted, and filtered any way you like.

If you already have a digital list of your cards, you can import it to Archidekt as text or a .CSV file. At the top of the collection page, click the Import link.

<h3>Collecting a Deck</h3>
You can update your collection from the deck page. Click the "Extras" button, then "Add to my collection" from the menu.

When adding a deck to your collection, you can exclude categories and control quantities.
<h3>Add Singles</h3>
Adding a single card to a collection works a lot like adding a card to a deck.
You can search for individual cards from the collection screen.
Anywhere else on Archidekt, you can add a card to your collection in the card details.

If you want other people to see your collection, or you need to use it on another application, you can export or share it.
Before sharing a collection, you need to make it public.
This is done through the Extra options menu that appears beneath your user name on the collection page.

You probably don't need a MTGO ID outside of MTGO, but card names are super important.

For the player who imagines more than the cards printed by Wizards of the Coast; Archidekt now supports Custom cards.
To create and manage your custom cards, select your username on the navigation bar, hover your cursor over My other stuff, and click the link to Custom cards.

A Collaborator can make changes to the contents and organization of the deck. Collaborators do not have access to anything in the deck's main settings. Edits made by collaborators are real-time, so you can work together simultaneously.
You will get a notification if someone invites you to collaborate on a deck.
You can navigate quickly to these collaborations from any Archidekt page.
Click "Decks" at the top of the screen, then select "Decks shared with me."

The best way to store your Magic deck is in a dedicated deck box. Options for these are plentiful, and easy to find at any LGS that sells cards.
Deck boxes come in all kinds of colors, patterns, materials, coatings, and shapes. These options really come down to your personal preference and how you want your deck box to look and feel.
But there's one aspect of deck boxes that isn't up to preference, and that's size. Deck boxes come in many sizes, so it's important that you're getting one that's capable of holding your deck. For Commander players, in particular, you need to make sure that the box can hold 100 sleeved cards.
What's more, if you're <a href="https://edhrec.com/articles/should-you-double-sleeve-your-commander-decks?utm_source=edhrec" target="_blank" rel="noopener">double-sleeving your deck</a>, you'll need to account for that in the box size as well. Some deck boxes hold 100 single-sleeved cards, but not 100 double-sleeved. Check the packaging on the box to make sure it fits your needs.
Some boxes are built for holding and transporting several decks. Just like single deck boxes, these come in all kinds of shapes, sizes, and materials.

Maybe you're just looking for storage options for single cards, or a handful of cards from your collection. There are options for this as well.
To store individual cards with extra protection, you'll want to get some top loaders (a few manufacturers also make side loaders). These are hard plastic shells that you can slide an individual card into to keep it safe from liquids, dents, or curling (foil curling is a big problem with Magic cards printed in the last few years).
For storing a small number of cards, binders are a great option. Not only do they keep your cards safe, they're also great for easily viewing the cards, since the cards are stored in clear plastic pages that generally hold nine cards on each side. Binders can even be used to hold a large number of cards, as long as you get one that's big enough.
One potential drawback to binders is that you have to be careful when adding to or removing from the binder page, as too much pressure on one spot on a card can do damage to it. But if you take care, this should be avoidable.

If you love Drafting, and you've built your own <a href="https://edhrec.com/articles/cube-could-fix-your-relationship-with-magic-the-gathering" target="_blank" rel="noopener">cube to Draft with</a>, you'll need a way to store your cube cards.
Larger deck boxes are great for holding cubes. Just make sure to check the packaging on the box to see if the size meets your needs. Also remember that if your cube is sleeved, then you'll need a bigger box to accommodate.
When Cube Drafting, you may want to have shells for individual packs that you create from your cube. Some manufacturers make cube "shells" for this very purpose, which are basically just really skinny versions of deck boxes, built to hold only 15 cards - the size of a Booster pack - at a time.

Storing your Magic collection can look a lot of different ways. And no one way is the right way; it all comes down to what meets your needs without exceeding your budget.
I don't store my collection in just one way. I have a system that works for me that uses binders for holding the cards I use often, deck boxes for holding my decks, and long cardboard boxes for the bulk that gets used less frequently.
Most people tend to store really large collections in cardboard boxes built for this purpose. These boxes are usually cheap, but mostly durable. They are, however, susceptible to water damage, so make sure to keep them on a shelf off of the floor if your home is in danger of flooding.

Dragon Shield is one of the most respected sleeve makers in the business, but they also make great card storage options too, like binders, deck boxes, and cube shells.

Another brand is Ultra Pro, a company that has been around for over 70 years. Many players will recognize Ultra Pro as a common purveyor of binders, sleeves, and deck boxes with recognizable Magic art on them.

Quiver Time is another newer manufacturer that has already garnered a lot of respect and support from players and creators alike. Their Bolt Card Case is incredibly popular and customizable with a few different colors. You can also hook your own strap to them (one is provided in the box) as well for that extra touch of personality.
Quivers are especially useful as soft-sided but durable storage hardware that can hold multiple decks or simply a large row of cards. You'll often see these in use at MagicCons in the Command Zone, and for good reason, they're much smaller and easier to organize than a full backpack.

The EDHREC Guide to MTG Card Storage

MagicCon Atlanta 2025 promises to be another smash hit for industry professionals and Magic players alike. This year, Space Cow Media CTO and Archidekt founder <a href="https://mcatlanta.mtgfestivals.com/en-us/experience/panels-and-events/panel-information.html?gtID=909459&amp;panel-name=Solving-Spellify-The-EDHREC-Guessing-Game" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Andy Grimm Cassidy will be on stage alongside JMarGameDesign to talk Spellify</a>, EDHREC's card guessing game, and plans for future games coming to EDHREC.
I interviewed Andy at MagicCon Vegas 2025 to get his perspective on working alongside friends to create <a href="https://archidekt.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Archidekt</a>, a premier deckbuilder and collection tracker, as well as integrating into the <a href="https://spacecowmedia.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Space Cow Media</a> company galaxy.
<h2>The Beginning of Something Magical</h2>
LAS VEGAS - You wouldn’t know Andy Grimm Cassidy is the founder of Archidekt, a deckbuilding platform for Magic: The Gathering, if you walked by him at a MagicCon. But you know his site, and most recently, you know Archidekt’s banners posted at the event’s artist area, promoting the most recent of a litany of new features added to the site regularly.
But Grimm Cassidy, 29, has had an influence on how the greater Magic community conducts deckbuilding; and that influence is something he and his team take very seriously.
Grimm Cassidy hails from Buffalo, New York, a city he describes with affection. “Buffalo is the City of Good Neighbors,” he said. “A lot of that comes from digging each other out from piles of snow.” He might not outwardly acknowledge it, but there’s a Rust Belt, Midwestern mentality that puts community first, and it has shaped Grimm Cassidy's approach to Archidekt from its nascency.
His first Commander was <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Rhys the Redeemed" href="#" target="_blank">Rhys the Redeemed</a>, converting a nostalgic 60-card Elf deck - the first deck he piloted that actually managed to beat his older brothers in the early 2000s - into a beloved Commander deck he still has to this day.
 “We got back into it, I was like, ‘oh, Rhys is a legendary creature. I used to love this card. I'll just make this into an Elf deck,’” he said. “I just remember the first Commander game we played, we just had this board state where everyone had so much stuff, and I had 18 Elves on the board. And I was like, ‘this is the best format of Magic possible.’ Like, this is beautiful. And that's what got us hooked again.”
<h2>Building Archidekt</h2>
But Andy isn't only a Magic player. He's also a builder, in every sense of the word. Archidekt started during his college years at the University of Buffalo, following conversations between him and a group of software-engineering peers who were dissatisfied with existing deckbuilding websites. 
“We (had) just graduated, so everyone had a bunch of free time, and obviously we wanted to share the decks online and stuff. Our big option at the time was TappedOut,” he said. “Now we have a bunch of fresh software engineers with new ideas looking at this relic of a website, and the tipping point was one of my friends had found a bug. He had reached out to the TappedOut folks, and they had been (dismissive). So a bunch of us got together and were just talking about the possibility of making something better.”
That interaction inspired Grimm Cassidy and his friend Mike Drewitt to create their own alternative.
Initially, he considered Archidekt merely a personal tool. 
“In my brain, I was just building it for our friend group,” he said. “Mike said he always had the sense from the beginning it could become a business. I don't know if that's revisionist or not, but I definitely didn't suspect it would be a business until we did our official release on Reddit.”
The public launch brought both humbling critiques and a rush of enthusiasm, with commenters pointing out aspects of the platform that could be improved. But the positivity far outweighed the criticism, giving him and Drewitt the momentum needed to keep going. 
“The big things that I didn't have a lot of experience with before Archidekt were UI design and user experience,” he said. “Maybe some time we’ll dredge up the original code, to look at the original iteration of Archidekt. There are a lot of unintuitive things. We were just green software engineers that just got out of college.”
<h2>Community-Forward</h2>
While Grimm Cassidy and Drewitt learned on the fly, the site quickly gathered a dedicated user base. They found managing community feedback rewarding, yet demanding. “We very quickly added a forum and a Discord so people could provide feedback. It adds a level of work,” Grimm Cassidy said. “But that's exactly what we wanted; we wanted to have this community-driven development.”
Andy attributed Archidekt’s growing popularity to its unique appeal: a tactile, visual approach. “What was important to us was to give it the feel of laying out your cards on a playmat,” he said. 
This tactile experience has become the platform’s defining trait, deeply resonating with Commander enthusiasts who look for their deckbuilding platform to mimic the feeling of constructing a deck on a desk or kitchen table.
<h2>Finding the Space Cow Media Galaxy</h2>
A crucial turning point came with their integration with EDHREC, a symbiotic partnership beneficial for both sites that began as a data-sharing association. EDHREC founder <a href="https://www.linkedin.com/in/donaldminer/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Don Miner</a> even approached Grimm Cassidy early on in Archidekt’s life, offering to buy the burgeoning website outright. 
Fresh out of college and living with his parents, Grimm Cassidy turned down the tempting offer. “I could wait him out. I was having fun, so I could just continue on with that. And Don was obviously very understanding,” he said. “His policy is always just to help everyone in the Magic community out. It builds (the community) up, and you end up with these partners that have good will towards you.”
His patience paid off. Archidekt grew steadily, gaining popularity and financial viability. When the COVID pandemic hit, after a brief uncertainty, the site experienced significant and rapid growth as people turned to Magic, and specifically Commander, as an outlet during lockdowns and social distancing.
 Eventually, Grimm Cassidy and Miner revisited their partnership, merging Archidekt with EDHREC under the Space Cow Media banner. “The sign of a good merger is that when you look back, everyone's happy,” Grimm Cassidy said. “And everyone's happy.”
<h2>Archidekt's Future Past</h2>
Grimm Cassidy’s long-term vision for Archidekt remains community-focused. “It’s just a matter of responding to the community and constantly improving our craft,” he said. For him, the project embodies dedication and continuous evolution.
Some of the more broad-reaching impacts on the community Archidekt has had weren't things he expected when beginning to craft what grew to become the site today. “The way Magic players now interact as a community has so much to do with how they brew decks and how they share decks,” he said.
And with the recent implementation of <a href="https://edhrec.com/articles/edhrec-guide-to-commander-brackets" target="_blank" rel="noopener">the Bracket System</a>, there's an increased need for documentation - of Commander decks and the cards each deck contains.
 “There now needs to be an understanding of ‘What combos are in my deck?’ You know, ‘How many <a href="https://edhrec.com/top/game-changers" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Game Changers</a>? How many extra turns?’ There's just this increasing need for documentation as the game grows larger,” said Grimm Cassidy. “There are just so many cards to search through. It’s tough to build Commander decks without tools now. So it's interesting that now we've become a part of this community. In a way, it's gratifying, for sure, and also sometimes humbling, because there's some responsibility.” 
Nearly a decade later, Grimm Cassidy reflected on seeing the Archidekt banner at the largest Magic event of the year. “That logo is something that I just made in some image editor eight years ago. That font is just a Google font that I picked, that I thought looked good. But that's not something anyone walking by would know,” he said.

 “It's a weird disconnect to me; this is something so personal. I personally dragged the lines to make it, but it’s now something that people just walk by at a convention, and it's just another thing.” 
The banners bring up a mixture of emotions for Andy. “It's gratifying, it's humbling, and also has that weird kind of disconnect. There’s a lot of personal connection and a lot of personal meaning behind these projects. They're not just like faceless websites,” he said. “And that's one of the most gratifying things about this job. You are not often, as a software engineer, both the user and the developer. But for pretty much everything we work on at Space Cow, we are both, which is so much fun.
