The Best Faerie Combo Cards in Commander

<p><a href="https://edhrec.com/sets/ecl" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><em>Lorwyn Eclipsed</em></a> brought some incredibly popular legends to the Commander format, and at the top of that list is <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Maralen, Fae Ascendant" href="#" target="_blank">Maralen, Fae Ascendant</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>. Combining Elves and Faeries together has proven to get a lot of people's imaginations going, including mine.</p>

<h2>What Does Maralen, Fae Ascendant Do?</h2>

<p><span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Maralen, Fae Ascendant" href="#" target="_blank">Maralen, Fae Ascendant</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> exiles the top two cards of an opponent's library whenever an Elf or Faerie you control enters the battlefield, which you could then possibly cast for free. While there's plenty of deck lists out there that're focused entirely on Elves or Faeries, I thought "Why not both?" So, I searched for the creatures that fit that bill but had the broadest effects.</p>
<p>So, the game plan for this deck is to fill the board with powerful Elves and Faeries in order to accrue value as the game goes on.</p>
<p>If you've never played a theft deck like this before, here's my biggest piece of advice: pick a player to steal from early and stay with them. You'll have a better chance to assemble synergies from someone else's deck in order to turn <em>their</em> win-con into <em>your</em> win-con.</p>
<h3>Mana Ramp</h3>

There are several other one-drop <a href="https://mtg.wiki/page/List_of_Magic_slang#Mana_dork" target="_blank" rel="noopener">mana dorks</a> in the deck, which help with powering out Maralen in the early game and can still assist with stealing cards just by entering the field in the late game.</li>
<li><span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Beastcaller Savant" href="#" target="_blank">Beastcaller Savant</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>: This deck is already very creature heavy, making the mana restriction on this card not too big of a draw back. Plus, since this Elf has haste, it can hit the board, trigger your commander, and immediately help you with casting another member of your team that'll exile more cards from your opponents.</li>
<li><span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Urborg Elf" href="#" target="_blank">Urborg Elf</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>: It's finally time for this resident of Urborg to shine! Before Maralen, we didn't have the greatest options for <a href="https://edhrec.com/tags/elves/sultai" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Sultai Elf</a> decks, but now this old common from Apocalypse can take center stage.</li>

<li><span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Skyshroud Ranger" href="#" target="_blank">Skyshroud Ranger</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>: Here's a card I think could see some more play in a broad number of decks. If you ever find yourself stuck with too many lands in your hand, then a simple tap of this creature will let you put one of them onto play untapped.</li>
<li><span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Coiling Oracle" href="#" target="_blank">Coiling Oracle</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>: Mixed right in the middle of all those creature types is "Elf," making this Simic staple a slam dunk in this list. Ramping a land or drawing a card when this enters play is just gravy on top of Maralen's theft effect.</li>
<li><span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Gala Greeters" href="#" target="_blank">Gala Greeters</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>: Since the main game plan of this deck is to flood the board with creatures, this two-drop will be ready to give you access to all of those great abilities over and over again.</li>

<h3>Card Advantage</h3>

Sure, you could whiff with this creature, but at least you still get to put that card into your hand if you do.</li>
<li><span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Nymris, Oona&#039;s Trickster" href="#" target="_blank">Nymris, Oona&#039;s Trickster</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>: Notably, if you cast Elves or Faeries on other peoples' turns, you could still steal some instant-speed spells from them. So, having a way to draw cards like this from your own deck as the game progresses will help keep you engaged with the rest of the table turn after turn.</li>
<li><span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Edric, Spymaster of Trest" href="#" target="_blank">Edric, Spymaster of Trest</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>: Here's an Elf that gives your evasive creatures the ability to draw you more cards, while also hopefully pointing some attackers towards your opponents, instead of you.</li>

However, when you combine that with seeing the top two cards of another player's deck, that rate doesn't sound so bad!</li>
<li><span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Will of the Temur" href="#" target="_blank">Will of the Temur</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> Here's a card draw spell that brings a whole lot of versatility to the deck. If your commander is out, you could draw a good number of cards, while making a clone version of one of your powerful Elves or Faeries. Or you could copy someone else's value piece, which brings you another way to steal your opponents' effects.</li>
<li><span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Mishra&#039;s Bauble" href="#" target="_blank">Mishra&#039;s Bauble</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>: This little artifact plays an interesting role in this deck. Having the choice to cash this in for a card, and the ability to look at the top of someone's library, means that you'll be more informed as to who you should target with Maralen next.</li>
</ul>
<h3>Flooding the Board</h3>

Bouncing someone's commander, while also stealing a whole bunch of their cards is a way to really rub salt in their wounds...</li>
<li><span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Sylvan Offering" href="#" target="_blank">Sylvan Offering</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>: Now I know that this card makes you give out some tokens to your opponents, but you're probably going to get more out of those Elves hitting your board than anyone else at the table.</li>
<li><span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Shadow Puppeteers" href="#" target="_blank">Shadow Puppeteers</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>: This creature entering your battlefield with two more tokens will count for three Faeries hitting your board, which is a lot of options for your commander's theft ability. Also, this adds a strong way to close out a game, since it can turn all your flyers into 4/4 Dragons.</li>
</ul>
<h3>Interaction</h3>

Having this enter, steal a few cards, and bounce a problematic creature makes it a great interaction piece for your strategy.</li>
<li><span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Chomping Changeling" href="#" target="_blank">Chomping Changeling</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>: Sure, this creature is both of your main creature types as well, but that's only because it has changeling. Even so, this entering play and sniping an artifact or enchantment, while being whatever type you need at that time, is perfect.</li>
<li><span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Spellscorn Coven" href="#" target="_blank">Spellscorn Coven</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>: Casting this for either of its modes is something your opponents don't want to see. Whether you're bouncing a spell off the stack or making people discard cards, this is a nasty inclusion here.</li>

<p>Since <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Maralen, Fae Ascendant" href="#" target="_blank">Maralen, Fae Ascendant</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> lets you cast a spell from the top two cards of someone's library, there are a couple ways in this 99 to ensure that the top of your foes' decks are extra stacked. <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Commit // Memory" href="#" target="_blank">Commit // Memory</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> and <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Memory Lapse" href="#" target="_blank">Memory Lapse</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> both have ways to stop people in their tracks, while placing a powerful card in a spot where you're all the more ready to utilize it to your own game plan.</p>

<p>With previews for <em>Outlaws at Thunder Junction</em> beginning with the preview stream kick-off, we were treated to a TON of exciting new legends. There were many to pick from, but one that got my attention right away was the new version of a known character: <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Kellan, the Kid" href="#" target="_blank">Kellan, the Kid</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>.</p>
<p>For those of you that missed it, Commander's Herald has a great <a href="https://commandersherald.com/everything-revealed-at-the-outlaws-of-thunder-junction-preview-stream/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">summary of the stream here</a>. Today though, we're focused on this new Bant legend ready to give us all sorts of fun value plays.</p>

<h2>Breaking Down Kellan</h2>
<p>So let's breakdown this new legend a bit. A 3/3 with flying and lifelink is a fine rate, but we're not playing a beatdown style strategy here. <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Kellan, the Kid" href="#" target="_blank">Kellan, the Kid</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> comes with a gnarly ability that is built to capitalize on the many keywords to build value. Kellan's new ability reads:</p>
<p><em>Whenever you cast a spell from anywhere other than your hand, you may cast a permanent spell with equal or lesser mana value from your hand without paying its mana cost. If you don't, you may put a land card from your hand onto the battlefield.</em></p>
<p>Right away, it's easy to be blown away by the raw amount of value you're going to accrue with Kellan. The obvious parallels for <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Kellan, the Kid" href="#" target="_blank">Kellan, the Kid</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> are <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Chulane, Teller of Tales" href="#" target="_blank">Chulane, Teller of Tales</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> and <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Rashmi, Eternities Crafter" href="#" target="_blank">Rashmi, Eternities Crafter</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, with their base green/blue engines with easy-to-trigger reward systems. <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Kellan, the Kid" href="#" target="_blank">Kellan, the Kid</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> sides with <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Rashmi, Eternities Crafter" href="#" target="_blank">Rashmi, Eternities Crafter</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> in that it provides a pseudo-Cascade type of value engine with lower mana value cards getting the boost. Kellan's payoffs are required to be played from your hand, which makes a small difference. This however does take some of the randomness and potential whiffs out of the equation. Either way, both of these other legends give us a chance for some serious inspiration to direct our decks here.</p>
<p><span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Kellan, the Kid" href="#" target="_blank">Kellan, the Kid</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> also brings a unique twist to this type of setup, requiring you to cast spells from anywhere <em>other</em> than your hand. This means anything cast from exile, graveyard, or even straight from your library will all trigger Kellan's ability. Thankfully we have a plethora of keywords on cards already that set up any <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Kellan, the Kid" href="#" target="_blank">Kellan, the Kid</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> deck with ways to trigger that ability, along with the new Plot keyword we're getting support for with new <em>Outlaws at Thunder Junction</em> cards.</p>

</a>Since we don't have many cards previewed yet, it's hard to plan around Plot as an early way to build into <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Kellan, the Kid" href="#" target="_blank">Kellan, the Kid</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> decks. You can almost be assured that a few Plot spells will be powerful enough for your decks. Any ability letting you cast spells for free at some point is sure to stir the pot a bit.</p>
<h2>Keywords to Capitalize</h2>
<p>The next question to answer is what keywords we need to search for in the deck. Thankfully we have a <em>ton</em> of options with mechanics casting from all the zones that will trigger Kellan's ability. <a href="https://scryfall.com/advanced" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Simple Scryfall searches</a> give us more options than we can possibly fit into one deck. The results of these searches really are staggering too:</p>
<p>Flashback: 89</p>
<p>Rebound: 26</p>
<p>Adventure: 67 with 17 cards that play into Adventures</p>
<p>Retrace: 7</p>
<p>Suspend: 56</p>
<p>Foretell: 34</p>
<p>So we can see that we have options. This doesn't even count any of the cards with the new Plot keyword starting with <em>Thunder Junction</em> and non-keyworded cards! All we need is a little direction with how we want to flavor the deck.</p>

<p>Plot as a keyword gives us a ton of flexibility. As we learned from the <a href="https://commandersherald.com/everything-revealed-at-the-outlaws-of-thunder-junction-preview-stream/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">official preview stream</a> Plot is a pseudo-Foretell type of mechanic. A big difference between Foretell and Plot is the discounted cast from Foretell versus free cast with Plot. Plot has more up-front costs, so you'll want to keep in mind the timing of when you're paying the mana for your spells.</p>
<h2>An Adventure in Building</h2>
<p>The mechanic I personally keep coming back to with a <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Kellan, the Kid" href="#" target="_blank">Kellan, the Kid</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> deck is Adventure. Previous versions of Kellan's character showed up as an Adventure, but there are a couple other reasons I like this approach.</p>
<p>To begin with, Adventure cards have a nice balance to them we need in a deck like this. Kellan's second ability lets us cast spells for free as long as the second spell has an equal or lesser value from the spell we cast outside our hand. This means that casting the non-Adventure side of any given card is going to trigger the ability. Even if the non-Adventure side is a little over-costed, it gives headroom for the free spells in our hands.</p>
<p style="text-align: left;"><div class="edhrecp__cards"><div class="edhrecp__card-container" name="Kellan, Inquisitive Prodigy"></div></div></p>
<p>The main appeal to having Adventures in the deck is how they let our mana curve be a little unique. Normally, putting six and seven mana spells in the deck means you're not casting them until later. On the other hand Adventures let us cast spells early while putting big spells on layaway. This comes in especially handy with cards like <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Beanstalk Giant" href="#" target="_blank">Beanstalk Giant</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> ramping us early or <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Sapphire Dragon" href="#" target="_blank">Sapphire Dragon</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> giving us a <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Negate" href="#" target="_blank">Negate</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> that provides a body later. Having early game interaction with late game beaters means we're always going to have spells to cast.</p>
<h2>Time for Rebound to Rebound</h2>
<p><span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Kellan, the Kid" href="#" target="_blank">Kellan, the Kid</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> also makes me want to dust off an old mechanic that hasn't gotten much love in Commander lately. Rebound hasn't been in a mainline set since <em>Khans of Tarkir</em>, and I think it's primed for some love. <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Profound Journey" href="#" target="_blank">Profound Journey</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> may not be the best rate, but through the lens of what <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Kellan, the Kid" href="#" target="_blank">Kellan, the Kid</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> wants, it has a chance to shine. The same goes for even simple cards like <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Sight Beyond Sight" href="#" target="_blank">Sight Beyond Sight</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>; the rate isn't great, but triggering our commander and keeping card selection coming is a huge boon.</p>

<h2>Additional Engines</h2>
<p>Another category of cards to make room for is beyond what is keyworded. This is Commander after all, where cards like <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Diluvian Primordial" href="#" target="_blank">Diluvian Primordial</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> have been casting spells from beyond the hand for years. I think this is a wonderful chance to bring out some cards from another commander you may not think of right away that overlaps a lot though: <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Tasha, the Witch Queen" href="#" target="_blank">Tasha, the Witch Queen</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>. Tasha decks bring some fun cards to steal from your opponents and cast spells from outside your own hand.</p>

<p style="text-align: center;">An unlikely source of inspiration</p>
<p>The deck page for <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Tasha, the Witch Queen" href="#" target="_blank">Tasha, the Witch Queen</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> right away has two high synergy cards that have a chance to stand out in <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Kellan, the Kid" href="#" target="_blank">Kellan, the Kid</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> decks. <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Chaos Wand" href="#" target="_blank">Chaos Wand</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> and [Rod of Absorption[/el] both give us a chance to use our opponents' best spells against them. <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Chaos Wand" href="#" target="_blank">Chaos Wand</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> gives an instant speed way to trigger Kellan's ability, and will surely create some hilarious moments in games. <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Rod of Absorption" href="#" target="_blank">Rod of Absorption</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> also offers utility with incidental graveyard hate sending instants and sorceries to exile rather than graveyards. For another version of this effect we also have the newer <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="River Song&#039;s Diary" href="#" target="_blank">River Song&#039;s Diary</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> from the <em>Doctor Who</em> set.</p>

<p><span style="font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;">Hello Friends. I'm Beth, Queen of Cardboard, and I'm here to review the new <em>Wilds of Eldraine Commander</em> precon deck, Fae Dominion. This is a Faerie typal deck, and the face commander, <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Tegwyll, Duke of Splendor" href="#" target="_blank">Tegwyll, Duke of Splendor</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, not only pumps your Faeries, but rewards you with card draw when your Faeries die, at the cost of one life. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;">As one of two precons from <em>Wilds of Eldraine,</em> this deck features a well known creature type and is strong straight of the box, with plenty of flyers and ways to get in for combat damage. It also features over 20 instant and sorcery cards to thwart your opponents, compared to a measly eight in its partner deck, Virtue and Valor.</span></p>
<h2><span style="font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;">Glamorous Fae</span></h2>
<p><span style="font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;"><div class="edhrecp__cards"><div class="edhrecp__card-container" name="Tegwyll, Duke of Splendor"></div></div></span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;"><span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Tegwyll, Duke of Splendor" href="#" target="_blank">Tegwyll, Duke of Splendor</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> is a three-cost Dimir (blue/black) 2/3 Faerie Noble. This relatively inexpensive commander is easy to cast, pumps your other Faeries, and with flying and deathtouch he can be difficult for opponents to deal with. Though he's not very large, he can get in early game for several points of commander damage, or if you'd like to build a board state, he's a creature that can protect your own life total by becoming a deterrent to combat by your opponents. In addition, he lends to great card advantage by providing a card draw for every Faerie death. Since most Faeries are rather cheap to cast, this can be a huge help both early and mid-game. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;">It's safe to say that this commander does everything you could want in a typical Faerie deck, but if losing life isn't your style, it's an easy swap for the alternate commander, <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Alela, Cunning Conqueror" href="#" target="_blank">Alela, Cunning Conqueror</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>. I'd say my only complaint at this point is that there's not a lot of recursion, so you're going to need to rely on your ability to create Faeries to maintain a board state.</span></p>

<p><span style="font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;">The deck features many reprints, bringing back several favorites featured in Throne of Eldraine. And new cards like <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Obyra, Dreaming Duelist" href="#" target="_blank">Obyra, Dreaming Duelist</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Spell Stutter" href="#" target="_blank">Spell Stutter</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, and <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Misleading Signpost" href="#" target="_blank">Misleading Signpost</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> are just a few fun additions that give you plenty of tricks to overcome your opponents both on the battlefield and off.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;">Let's check out the strengths of this deck together.</span></p>
<h2><span style="font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;">Fae Tricksters</span></h2>
<p><span style="font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;"><div class="edhrecp__cards"><div class="edhrecp__card-container" name="Malleable Impostor"></div><div class="edhrecp__card-container" name="Nettling Nuisance"></div><div class="edhrecp__card-container" name="Blightwing Bandit"></div></div></span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;">This deck is full of tricksters and attempts to win by surprising your opponents. Most of the creatures aren't terribly big, so playing it well means tricking your opponent into a disadvantageous play.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;">If you've been asking for more removal in your Commander precons, this is the deck for you. The deck features one-sided board wipes, counterspells, and other removal. With cards like <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Kindred Dominance" href="#" target="_blank">Kindred Dominance</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Nightmare Unmaking" href="#" target="_blank">Nightmare Unmaking</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Reality Shift" href="#" target="_blank">Reality Shift</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, and <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Snap" href="#" target="_blank">Snap</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, you'll always have a way to remove a problem.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;">Adventure cards are also found here, giving extra value with both a non-permanent and permanent spell in one card. Going on an Adventure might not happen often in this deck, but the four included are full of value, with only <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Hypnotic Sprite" href="#" target="_blank">Hypnotic Sprite</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> being a fairly vanilla Faerie and providing little to no extra value as a creature. <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Brazen Borrower" href="#" target="_blank">Brazen Borrower</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> can come in handy at any time, as its flash ability makes it easy to cast and provides a body on the field in a time of need.</span></p>

<p><span style="font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;">I'll be honest, this deck has a lot going for it. My only complaint is that for a new player, it might have <em>too</em> much going for it. You've got copy spells, combat tricks, life gain, life drain, and a whole lot of cards to play during your opponents' turns. This isn't a bad thing, just something to keep in mind, and when teaching a new player this might not be the deck I reach for. For those who love Faeries or lots of interaction, it's easy to see why this deck has become so popular.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;">Let's take a look at the other cards that you can use as a commander in this deck.</span></p>
<h2><span style="font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;">Cunning Combat</span></h2>
<p><span style="font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;"><div class="edhrecp__cards"><div class="edhrecp__card-container" name="Alela, Cunning Conqueror"></div></div></span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;">The alternate commander is <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Alela, Cunning Conqueror" href="#" target="_blank">Alela, Cunning Conqueror</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>. While she's a little more expensive than <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Tegwyll, Duke of Splendor" href="#" target="_blank">Tegwyll, Duke of Splendor</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, she rewards you both for casting spells during your opponents' turns and also for dealing combat damage with Faeries. She's a four-cost 2/4 Faerie Warlock that gives you a 1/1 Faerie Rogue for each spell you cast during each opponent's turn <em>and</em> Goads creatures on your opponent's board when your Faeries deal combat damage to them. Supporting her, you have several Faeries with flash, and did I mention the 17 instants in the deck?</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;"><div class="edhrecp__cards"><div class="edhrecp__card-container" name="Quickling"></div><div class="edhrecp__card-container" name="Malleable Impostor"></div><div class="edhrecp__card-container" name="Scion of Oona"></div></div></span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;">This deck is begging you to play cards during your opponents' turns, and the rewards for doing so can completely disrupt any strategy that's thrown your way. If that's not enough, you've got a little surprise in the one non-Fae creature in the list, <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Hullbreaker Horror" href="#" target="_blank">Hullbreaker Horror</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>. While I'm not a huge fan of cards showing up just because they're good, <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Hullbreaker Horror" href="#" target="_blank">Hullbreaker Horror</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> is going to give you lots of value for doing what the deck is trying to do, pester your opponents and distract from your tiny pokes along the way.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;">In addition to <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Alela, Cunning Conqueror" href="#" target="_blank">Alela, Cunning Conqueror</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, you're provided with three other creatures that you could swap in for the commander, <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Obyra, Dreaming Duelist" href="#" target="_blank">Obyra, Dreaming Duelist</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Nymris, Oona&#039;s Trickster" href="#" target="_blank">Nymris, Oona&#039;s Trickster</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, and <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Oona, Queen of the Fae" href="#" target="_blank">Oona, Queen of the Fae</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>. In my opinion, the only other good option is Obyra.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;"><div class="edhrecp__cards"><div class="edhrecp__card-container" name="Obyra, Dreaming Duelist"></div></div></span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;">Obyra is simple, with the ability to drain your opponents when Faeries enter your battlefield. While there are options outside of the deck for this commander that would be smooth, within the precon there are only five cards that deal with life loss. Most of them make <em>you</em> lose life, not your opponents. Only <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Faerie Bladecrafter" href="#" target="_blank">Faerie Bladecrafter</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> helps you gain life and, simply put, this strategy is too slow without upgrading or changing the deck entirely. The other two options, Nymris and Oona, are much more expensive mana wise and don't have as much value as either <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Tegwyll, Duke of Splendor" href="#" target="_blank">Tegwyll, Duke of Splendor</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> or <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Alela, Cunning Conqueror" href="#" target="_blank">Alela, Cunning Conqueror</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>.</span></p>
<h2><span style="font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;">Conclusion</span></h2>
<p><span style="font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;">Faeries are easily one of the favorite typal decks to play, and this precon's popularity has proven that. It far outsells the other <em>Wilds of Eldraine</em> precon deck, Virtue and Valor, at my local game store.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;">Having played against the deck, I can say that it presents a threat and has a lot of responses for just about any situation. However, without a solid life-draining strategy, and little recursion, I find this deck to be annoying without an easily defined win condition. Yes, it has counterspells, and yes it has removal, but against a deck that also has those things and large creatures or board wipes, these little guys will be stuck in your graveyard, and there's not much to do after that. I write this knowing full well I'm in the minority here, but that's okay.</span></p>
