Hey nerds! With the release of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, we're introduced to 38 new rare and mythic commanders from the main set. While many people might ask which of these is the most powerful, I prefer to ask how fun they are. As is the case with most Universes Beyond sets, I'll be splitting up the main set and precons due to the high number of commanders.
Of course, each person's definition of fun differs, so I might rate a commander lower or higher than you. That doesn't mean I think it's bad or that you're bad for playing them, and, to be clear, this is for casual Commander only.
If you're looking for deck techs for any of the commanders you see below, you can find all of our Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles deck techs here.
The ranks are as follows:
- Want to Build: I'm interested in building these commanders. Their effect could be unique or a new take on an old mechanic I like.
- Fun: These are close to wanting to build, but I'm not going out of my way to brew a list for myself.
- Could Be Fun: These commanders are powerful and don't pull you in a single direction, but because of that, it allows you to build weird strategies with a powerful engine, or have unique build paths that could work.
- Fun in the 99: Sometimes commanders are printed for 60-card Magic or to support a theme. I don't want to call them not fun, since they usually are fun. But just not fun as the leader of a deck.
- Not Fun: This is usually reserved for older commanders who are seven-mana vanilla creatures, something way too jank, or are too salt-inducing for my taste.
The Commanders of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
Agent Bishop, Man in BlackAgent Bishop, Man in Black
Solid roleplayer in a counters deck. Reminds me of Luminarch AspirantLuminarch Aspirant, but gets to buff two creatures and doesn't necessarily need to be your own.
Fun Rank: Fun in the 99
Leonardo, Cutting EdgeLeonardo, Cutting Edge
A bog-standard life gain commander with the upside of sneak. If you wanted to build a Lifegain deck, he'll be serviceable. Nothing fancy here, which isn't necessarily a bad thing.
Fun Rank: Fun
Leonardo, Sewer SamuraiLeonardo, Sewer Samurai
If you have SolemnitySolemnity and any zero-mana creature, like OrnithopterOrnithopter, you can go infinite with any free sacrifice outlet. Even without Solemnity, there are several ways to manipulate counters.
Fun Rank: Fun
Sally Pride, Lioness LeaderSally Pride, Lioness Leader
My first impression was that Sally is a mediocre go-wide commander. But then I realized her ability isn't cast, but enters. White has plenty of ways to blink her, and cards like Delney, Streetwise LookoutDelney, Streetwise Lookout can give you an additional trigger.
Fun Rank: Fun
April O'Neil, HacktivistApril O'Neil, Hacktivist
Not sure where I'd want to play April. I could see her as an artifact commander, but there are more interesting options in blue.
Fun Rank: Could be Fun
Deck Tech by Jesse Barker Plotkin
Donatello, Gadget MasterDonatello, Gadget Master
Players are less willing to get smacked by a commander compared to a creature in the 99. Especially one that has a powerful effect. But there are plenty of ways to bounce Donatello back to your hand, redeploy some unblockable idiot like GingerbruteGingerbrute, and attack again next turn.
Fun Rank: Could be Fun
Donatello, Mutant MechanicDonatello, Mutant Mechanic
Whenever I see a tap ability on a blue commander, I want to go infinite using Intruder AlarmIntruder Alarm. Using a mana dork, like Silver MyrSilver Myr, Animation ModuleAnimation Module, and Intruder AlarmIntruder Alarm gives you infinite tokens and counters. He also makes a great Vehicle commander that can animate Smuggler's CopterSmuggler's Copter or Skysovereign, Consul FlagshipSkysovereign, Consul Flagship.
Fun Rank: Could be Fun
Kitsune, Dragon's DaughterKitsune, Dragon's Daughter
Can't wait to add it to my Oops All Dreadmaws deck. This will either be an incredibly fun commander, where the pilot moves things around to cause unique interactions, or they'll lock a single player out of the game by giving them some god-awful creature.
Fun Rank: Could be Fun
Krang, Master MindKrang, Master Mind
Affinity for artifacts is already a notoriously broken ability. I'll be surprised if Krang ever costs more than three mana to cast, even after being removed several times.
Fun Rank: Could be Fun
Mondo GeckoMondo Gecko
This might be a hot take, but I actually love this commander. Now, I know I said earlier I don't like combat damage triggers on commanders, but building a color-changing deck is exactly why I play commander. Where else am I going to play the absolute banger, Dream CoatDream Coat?
Fun Rank: Want to Build
Renet, Temporal ApprenticeRenet, Temporal Apprentice
I'm sure Renet will do wonders in Inalla, Archmage RitualistInalla, Archmage Ritualist decks or some Blink deck. Her ability is much worse when you see it coming and if you wanted to mass bounce your own things, there are better effects for this.
Fun Rank: Fun in the 99
Armaggon, Future SharkArmaggon, Future Shark
It'll probably kill people in Limited and maybe as a reanimation target in the 99 of a deck.
Fun Rank: Fun in the 99
Madame Null, Power BrokerMadame Null, Power Broker
Goes infinite with persist creatures, assuming you have enough life, and works great in the 99 of counters decks.
Fun Rank: Could be Fun
Rat King, VerministerRat King, Verminister
Arguably the best Relentless RatsRelentless Rats and Rat ColonyRat Colony commander. You can easily fill your graveyard, then use Verminister's ability to reanimate your army right before your turn. Or you can build a Rat typal deck.
Fun Rank: Could be Fun
Savanti Romero, Time's ExileSavanti Romero, Time's Exile
I love seeing card advantage in the command zone. It's a little slow, as mono-black doesn't have a ton of counter support. But in the 99 of counter decks, I'm into this.
Fun Rank: Could be Fun
Shark Shredder, Killer CloneShark Shredder, Killer Clone
Sneak from the command zone is a lot less sneaky. The timing of the reanimation is cute, ensuring whatever you reanimate will hit your opponent. The biggest concern is your opponent having a creature worth stealing.
Fun Rank: Fun in the 99
Super ShredderSuper Shredder
Another mono black sacrifice commander. The issue is this one doesn't do anything aside get bigger. You can use Rite of ConsumptionRite of Consumption or Whispersilk CloakWhispersilk Cloak tclose out games, but that isn't super interesting for a sacrifice commander.
Fun Rank: Fun in the 99
Casey Jones, VigilanteCasey Jones, Vigilante
Maybe you'll play this as a Madness commander? It's not very inspiring.
Fun Rank: Fun in the 99
Raphael, Ninja DestroyerRaphael, Ninja Destroyer
Notably, Raphael doesn't have to be dealt combat damage. If you can give him indestructible, Lightning BoltLightning Bolt becomes Dark RitualDark Ritual, and Lightning AxeLightning Axe becomes something dumber. And Blasphemous ActBlasphemous Act probably wins you the game on the spot.
Fun Rank: Fun
Raphael, the NightwatcherRaphael, the Nightwatcher
Better when you surprise people with this than having it in the command zone. Still not bad as a commander, but not that interesting.
Fun Rank: Fun in the 99
Slash, Reptile RampagerSlash, Reptile Rampager
If Purphoros, God of the ForgePurphoros, God of the Forge is too expensive (money-wise), try Slash. He isn't as good, but it's close enough. It's also a great option to power down your Purphoros deck.
Fun Rank: Fun
Deck Tech by Nicholas Lucchesi
Groundchuck & DirtbagGroundchuck & Dirtbag
A big mana commander in a color that already ramps a bunch. I could see this as a good commander for a new player who just wants to play big spells, but not all that interesting.
Fun Rank: Fun in the 99
Deck Tech by Jesse Barker Plotkin
Leatherhead, Swamp StalkerLeatherhead, Swamp Stalker
She's great interaction in a counters deck, but is lacking as a commander in both fun and power.
Fun Rank: Fun in the 99
Michelangelo, ImproviserMichelangelo, Improviser
We've seen effects like this on several commanders and cards in the past. Most don't require you deal combat damage to trigger. It's cute if you can give him double strike.
Fun Rank: Could be Fun
Michelangelo, Weirdness to 11Michelangelo, Weirdness to 11
A Hardened ScalesHardened Scales from the command zone that enters with a token. A great addition to any +1/+1 counter or Blink deck.
Fun Rank: Fun in the 99
Mutagen Man, Living OozeMutagen Man, Living Ooze
I've been messing around with a Sultai () game objects deck that makes every token imaginable, and Mutagen Man will be a great inclusion. Notably, he can reduce the ability costs to zero, which is great.
Fun Rank: Fun
Deck Tech by Alejandro Fuentes
Don & Leo, Problem SolversDon & Leo, Problem Solvers
A Conjurer's ClosetConjurer's Closet in the command zone that hits two targets instead of one. While there are more unique Blink commanders, I'm happy to see this effect in the command zone.
Fun Rank: Fun
Krang & ShredderKrang & Shredder
A Theft commander that requires some work around. Having a permanent leave the battlefield isn't hard to do, especially in Dimir (). They also allow for a combo win if you can infinitely flicker them to mill out your opponents.
Fun Rank: Fun
Tokka & Rahzar, Terrible TwosTokka & Rahzar, Terrible Twos
They provide a narrow but powerful punisher effect from the command zone. I would expect to see this in higher Bracket games, where you'll see free spells more often.
Fun Rank: Could be Fun
Raph & Mikey, TroublemakersRaph & Mikey, Troublemakers
Seven mana is a lot, but Gruul () has no issues getting there quickly. If you lean into the randomness, I think this is a fun commander. But if you only put a few key creatures in your deck, I can see it getting stale fast.
Fun Rank: Could be Fun
Mikey & Leo, Chaos & OrderMikey & Leo, Chaos & Order
A generically powerful counter commander. It takes a little bit of effort to trigger this every turn, but can quickly snowball into a ton of card advantage. Unless you have Forgotten AncientForgotten Ancient, in which case it takes no effort.
Fun Rank: Could be Fun
Dark Leo & ShredderDark Leo & Shredder
I'm happy to see another Ninja commander that isn't Yuriko, the Tiger's ShadowYuriko, the Tiger's Shadow. Their static effect means you should be able to connect with creatures easily. And their ability to close out games quickly requires setup.
Fun Rank: Fun
Don & Raph, Hard ScienceDon & Raph, Hard Science
I love their ability because it's an attack trigger, not combat damage. And multiple instances of affinity stack. So if you cast Blinkmoth InfusionBlinkmoth Infusion it'll count all your artifacts twice.
Fun Rank: Fun
Bebop & RocksteadyBebop & Rocksteady
Maybe you could build a Reanimation deck using them as a way to fill your graveyard. But even then, there are more fun ways to do that.
Fun Rank: Fun in the 99
Raph & Leo, Sibling RivalsRaph & Leo, Sibling Rivals
I'm a huge fan of extra combat steps, especially when you need to choose which creatures to attack with again. You can also stack combat steps with cards like Combat CelebrantCombat Celebrant. While you can't exert it twice, you can untap it so you can attack with it again next turn.
Fun Rank: Want to Build
Mikey & Don, Party PlannersMikey & Don, Party Planners
While their ability is a bit on the nose, I do enjoy casting spells from the top of my library. Simic () has plenty of effects that provide additional benefits for casting spells from not your hand.
Fun Rank: Fun
Splinter, Radical RatSplinter, Radical Rat
A fun static ability combined with a flavorful activated ability and access to Esper () makes this an easy want to build.
Fun Rank: Want to Build
Krang, Utrom WarlordKrang, Utrom Warlord
A big finisher for Artifact decks. It's powerful, but also costs nine mana and is less scary when you see it coming.
Fun Rank: Fun in the 99
Overall, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles feels like a slightly better Spider-Man. The cards and flavor are fine, with some standouts. I don't think it'll have a huge impact on the format, with some archetypes getting good support pieces or additional tools.
I'd love to hear what you're looking forward to building and if you disagree with any of my rankings down in the comments. Make sure to come back every weekday for more great Commander articles here on EDHREC.
