<p>Last month (or last year, if you prefer), we had a myriad of spoilers from the <a href="https://edhrec.com/sets/msh" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><em>Marvel Super Heroes</em></a> set. This week, I'll be providing a Commander deck tech on...</p>
<p>*A knock on the door*</p>
<p>I'm not expecting anyone right now. I wonder who it could be. *Opens the Door, and staggers back a little* Wait, <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Doctor Doom" href="#" target="_blank">Doctor Doom</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>?</p>
<p>Doom: Yes, it is I.</p>
<p>Me: *stammers a bit, but corrects myself* I must ask: Are you <em>the</em> Doom, or are you a Doombot?</p>

<p>Doom: Look into my eyes, and know that you are speaking with the one true Doom. Lord of Latveria. Godfather of one Valeria Richards. One-time Sorcerer Supreme, and Leader of the World. Also, the nemesis of the so-called Fantastic Four and their leader Reed Richards.</p>
<p>Me: *takes a moment to digest what was said, and looks past the metal mask* It <em>is</em> you. I welcome you to my humble abode. How can I help?</p>
<p>Doom: I've heard of a game Reed now plays, called <em>Magic: The Gathering</em>. It so happens that both of us got a card, and I need a deck to defeat him. I've heard about <a href="https://edhrec.com/articles/j-jonah-jameson-commander-deck-tech" target="_blank" rel="noopener">the time</a> when you appeared on <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="J. Jonah Jameson" href="#" target="_blank">J. Jonah Jameson</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>'s broadcast. He was a fool for shouting you off as he did. I can see the potential in you.</p>
<p>Me: I can assist you, but may I ask if you're new to the game? I'd like to go over your game plan, if you'll indulge me.</p>
<p>Doom: As you were.</p>
<p>Me: Right.</p>
<h3>The Plot Thickens</h3>

<p>Me: To begin, <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Doctor Doom" href="#" target="_blank">your card</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> costs six mana, so we need to ramp pretty hard when you get there. At that point, we're going to need you to stick around. Fortunately, your card has indestructible built into it. We just need to control an artifact creature or a Plan. There's plenty of ways to do that. Even your card comes with a pair of 3/3 Doombots.</p>
<p>But, we can always use more. For starters, <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Death in Heaven" href="#" target="_blank">Death in Heaven</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> will keep graveyard-centric decks honest, and makes artifact creatures on top of that. In addition, <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Genesis of the Daleks" href="#" target="_blank">Genesis of the Daleks</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> will keep dropping artifact creatures, and the number will grow for each lore counter on the card.</p>
<p>In the end, we force an opponent into a choice: Destroy the Daleks and lose a load of life, or wipe the board of non-Daleks. However, it's likely that the wipe will happen because opponents will see this coming and try to reduce the number of Daleks. There's a few more in there, but don't count on them being out at the same time as the Saga.</p>
<p>Doom: I noticed you have a card of me tooting Namor's horn.</p>
<p>Me: That was for a little fun. It gave me and everyone else a good laugh. That said, the real card I should be covering in its place is the one Plan card that's been revealed so far: <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Doom Reigns Supreme" href="#" target="_blank">Doom Reigns Supreme</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>. Your card is the only one with the Villain type in this list, so the build-up will be slow, but at least it'll be indestructible while it's out. I won't keep you for too long, so let me show you the first list. And, if this isn't to your liking, I have something up my sleeve as well.</p>

<h3>All Laid Bare</h3>

<p>Me: This list is my traditional <em>Universes Beyond</em> only list. People find the whole thing polarizing, but you wouldn't have come to me if it didn't exist. Certainly, this list's game plan is to amass an army of artifact creatures. It's your typical Bracket 2 fanfare, and simple to understand.</p>
<p>Firstly, both <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Cybermen Squadron" href="#" target="_blank">Cybermen Squadron</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> and <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Cyberman Patrol" href="#" target="_blank">Cyberman Patrol</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> do two different things, but achieving the same goal. On the one hand, Squadron gives every nonlegendary artifact creature the myriad ability, so you can attack other opponents as well. This is useful when you have an "enters the battlefield" ability (or ETB for short) that you want to double or triple up on. On the other, Patrol makes blocking difficult, especially if life totals are low.</p>
<p>In a similar vein, <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Skorpekh Lord" href="#" target="_blank">Skorpekh Lord</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> gives your artifact creatures a small boost and, more importantly, menace. This'll make blocking your artifact army much more difficult. That said, I have to say the best card in the deck is <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Biotransference" href="#" target="_blank">Biotransference</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>. While the first ability doesn't do much here, it makes your card an artifact creature, thus making it indestructible.</p>
<p>Not only that, each artifact you cast creates an artifact creature token.</p>
<p>Doom: I would like to point out that Reed is playing under Bracket 3.</p>

<h3>The Master Plan</h3>

<p>Me: This deck I dubbed "The Reedslayer." I pulled out every stop I could to ensure this deck is worthy to your eyes. Normally, I'd explain what in-universe cards would work in your deck. However, as you need to put a stop to Reed's plans, I present this list instead.</p>
<p>To start, I looked over Reed's card, and he draws a card if he casts a noncreature spell before combat. Thus, I included <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Sheoldred, the Apocalypse" href="#" target="_blank">Sheoldred, the Apocalypse</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> as a foil to that ability. We're in black, and that has plenty of way to remove creatures, including Reed himself, so he won't copy anything.</p>
<p>Included in the deck are what are called "scam" cards. The intent is to cast this on your card, shielding it from removal and putting it back on the battlefield. In doing this, more Doombots are created. Otherwise, there's ways to make an absurd amount of mana, and finishers to exploit said mana.</p>
<p>There's also an infinite combo in the list: <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Aetherflux Reservoir" href="#" target="_blank">Aetherflux Reservoir</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Bolas&#039;s Citadel" href="#" target="_blank">Bolas&#039;s Citadel</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, and <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Sensei&#039;s Divining Top" href="#" target="_blank">Sensei&#039;s Divining Top</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>.</p>
<p>Here's how it works: You have all three out. You tap the Top to put it back on top of the deck, drawing a card. However, with the Citadel out, the Top can be cast again for one life, and you get that life back (and more!) with Reservoir. This way, you go through the deck, and gain so much life it'll completely annihilate Richards with the Reservoir's activated ability.</p>
<h3>Further Upgrades</h3>
<p>Doom: This is beautiful. So evil, yet an excellent way to foil his plans. I will make use of this deck, and report back to you after Richards and his so-called Fantastic Four have been stopped.</p>
<p>Me: *gives Doom the deck* One more thing. If you want to push this deck into Bracket 4, it's quite simple to do. There are other <a href="https://edhrec.com/top/game-changers" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Game Changers</a> that tutor, like <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Vampiric Tutor" href="#" target="_blank">Vampiric Tutor</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, to get that combo faster. Cheap and fast mana rocks as well as <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Deadly Rollick" href="#" target="_blank">Deadly Rollick</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> (not a Game Changer) and <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Yawgmoth&#039;s Will" href="#" target="_blank">Yawgmoth&#039;s Will</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> will go a long way.</p>
<h3>One Week Later</h3>
<p>And that's a wrap for this article. I went above and beyond to present a deck that's worthy of Victor von Doom. I sure hope he's succeeded. In any case, join me next time when we return to <em>ATLA </em>when I go over the last character I'll cover from that set.</p>

<p><em>Magic</em> has taken more and more steps towards involving non-native properties in the game. Regardless of how players feel about this, these Universes Beyond sets have become a regular occurrence for card releases.</p>
<p>Designed with the expectation of bringing new players into the game, Universes Beyond sets out to have an immediate appeal for those new players. Spider-Man, Deadpool, and Wolverine all have had appearances in <em>Magic</em> for that exact reason.</p>

<p>Recognizability is important to the designers when it comes to choosing which properties and characters will be printed as cards. This ultimately ties back to popularity. And with the popularity of things like the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it’s no surprise the aforementioned characters were the first up.</p>
<p>Though it’s also not a strict correlation.</p>
<p>Mainstream heroes such as the Hulk or Cyclops weren’t printed despite their recognizability. Meanwhile, a character such as Namor gets to cameo in the background of card art despite his comparative obscurity.</p>

<p>Now the web-head himself has an entire set devoted to him and his rogues gallery. And there’ll be more Marvel sets after <em>Spider-Man.</em> So it raises the question:</p>

<h2>Characters Already Printed</h2>
<p>During the Marvel Secret Lair Superdrop, Captain America, Iron Man, Wolverine, Storm, and Black Panther each had a unique commander card designed around them. Then as with most Secret Lair drops, they each got a few cards to support them. Some were mechanically unique while others were reprints with updated art.</p>
<p>This also included some alternate art showcasing Baby Groot and a later April Fool’s Day Deadpool drop. Again, with a mixture of unique and reprinted cards.</p>

<p>Doctor Strange even managed to star in the art of everyone’s favorite blue spell during a promotional drop.</p>

<p>It’s really up to personal taste as to if any of these characters should have a set devoted to them and their team.</p>
<p>On the one hand, they’ve already had cards devoted to them and adding more feels like bloat. Why waste the opportunity to show off other, more obscure characters who haven’t had the time to shine yet?</p>
<p>Or to simply focus on in-universe storylines and cards?</p>
<p>On the other hand, these characters contain multitudes that can reasonably be explored via different mechanics. The core of Universes Beyond is recognizability, so making the “faces” of a property like Marvel have different mechanics maximizes the chances of new players connecting with the game.</p>
<p>But that’s not a satisfying answer for existing players.</p>
<h4>Focus On New Characters</h4>
<p>It’s best to avoid devoting a set to the already-released characters. They might show up in a larger set if they’re relevant, particularly in artwork. But they won't be granted new mechanics or cards focused on them.</p>
<p>So no Civil War precons.</p>
<p>The following is a list of a few teams that would work as future Universes Beyond sets. The mechanics for the characters mentioned are suggestions to capture the vibe of the character, as opposed to specific listings of what they should or should not do.</p>

<h2>Fantastic Four</h2>
<p>One of the most famous teams Marvel has to offer, the Fantastic Four could quite easily take up each color of Magic. Assuming they’re all monocolored, Mister Fantastic would be blue, Invisible Woman white, Human Torch red, and the Thing green.</p>
<p>But the set would need to account for black. But none of the Fantastic Four fit that color. They each have a pretty clear niche.</p>
<p>Which is why their nemesis Doctor Doom would be a perfect fit.</p>
<h3>Some Examples</h3>
<p><strong>Mister Fantastic</strong> would have the keyword reach to account for his… reach. Aside from that, his genius intellect is his strongest weapon, granting card draw or scrying to reflect him planning ahead.</p>
<p><strong>Invisible Woman’s</strong> would grant a low-costed ward or shield counters to other creatures you control to represent her barriers. She herself would have hexproof or the inability to be blocked to represent invisibility.</p>
<p><strong>Human Torch</strong> would be flying and have haste. He would either have the ability to deal damage to any target based on a trigger, or he’d grow in power and toughness to reflect him burning brighter. Either way, he’s all about direct damage.</p>
<p><strong>The Thing</strong> would have menace and high base stats, particularly his toughness. Though he’d be a reasonable threat on his own, he would apply stun counters to any creature that blocked him to disrupt your opponent’s board state.</p>
<p><strong>Doctor Doom</strong> would have to have some sort of affinity for artifacts, likely creating a doombot artifact token as an enter-the-battlefield (ETB) effect. His petty schemes could force opponents to discard cards or he could act as a mastermind utility piece with cost reduction. He could even sacrifice artifacts to increase his own power.</p>

<h2>X-Men and Mutants</h2>
<p>There are more than enough X-Men outside of those already printed that an entire set devoted to mutants would still have characters unaccounted for. Professor X, Magneto, Jean Gray, Cyclops, Mystique, Emma Frost, etc.</p>
<p>No matter how many characters are included, there will always be some left out. Which is unfortunate for players who wanted to see their favorite character included.</p>
<p>Though as a card game, an X-Men <em>Magic</em> set would absolutely need Gambit.</p>
<h3>Some Examples</h3>
<p><strong>Professor X</strong> would be blue and white given his personality. As a telepath he could see your opponent’s hand and force them to discard a card on a trigger. Or just make them mill cards. Similarly, his mind control abilities could allow for anything from applying stun tokens to tapped creatures to choosing which creatures can block him.</p>
<p><strong>Magneto</strong> would be black and white, given his sinister but principled approach. Though depending on his presentation, I see him as having a third of either red or blue. He’d be able to destroy and/or manipulate artifacts, likely having protection against them.</p>
<p><strong>Gambit</strong> would be red, given his carefree attitude. He’d deal a small amount of damage every time you draw a card and give you a means to draw more cards. Not very complicated, but effective once you get it going.</p>
<p><strong>Jean Gray</strong> would be red and blue, potentially with black depending on if she had the Phoenix Force. Either way she’d have prowess to indicate her psychic abilities with some additional effect to reflect her skills. Without the Phoenix Force, it’d be card draw or milling an opponent. With the Phoenix Force it’d be creature destruction, scaling based on how many instants and sorceries you can cast on your turn. She might even be a two-faced transforming card.</p>

<h2>Avengers and S.H.I.E.L.D.</h2>
<p>Though two of the most famous Avengers have already been printed, that’s not to stop the rest of them from having their time in the spotlight. Particularly if focusing on a distinct but separate organization such as S.H.I.E.L.D.</p>
<p>That could involve a number of spy and rogue cards that are simply S.H.I.E.L.D. operatives acting in the background. Or it could entirely revolve around the heroes, since there's already a ton to get through.</p>
<h3>Some Examples</h3>
<p><strong>Bruce Banner</strong> would be a two-faced transforming card with some minor utility function but weak stats. Upon transforming into the <strong>Hulk,</strong> he would gain +1/+1 counters every time he took damage in addition to naturally having the trample keyword. Bruce Banner strikes me as blue with a potential mix of green, whereas Hulk strictly strikes me as green and red.</p>
<p><strong>Thor</strong> would be red and white with first strike and an ETB effect to bring an Equipment card from your graveyard back to your hand. Of course, Mjölnir would have to be a card as well, granting flying to whomever has it equipped alongside a bonus to their power.</p>
<p><strong>Black Widow</strong> would be black and blue with the ability to not be blocked by creatures with power greater than hers. When dealing damage to an opponent, they would have to either discard or mill, reflecting her sabotaging their plans.</p>
<p><strong>Nick Fury</strong> would be white, black, and blue, given his shady means of ultimately achieving good ends. The directions for his mechanics could vary wildly. He'd likely make it so that one or more of your creatures are unblockable each turn. He himself wouldn’t be a very large threat, but he would have hexproof or protection from certain colors.</p>

<h2>Plenty Of Paths To Choose</h2>
<p>Many of these proposed mechanics have some degree of overlap with existing creatures. In those cases, a reprint is all that’s necessary. Either in a Secret Lair drop or otherwise.</p>
<p>But assuming there's more sets to come, will the Avengers get new cards with a new Captain America and a new Iron Man? Will there be a set focusing on the X-Men and Brotherhood of Evil, the Inhumans, or even more cosmic faces like the Guardians of the Galaxy?</p>

What Marvel Set Should Magic Do After Spider-Man?

<p>A few days ago, <em>Magic</em> Head Designer <strong>Mark Rosewater</strong> addressed some concerns about the <a href="https://commandersherald.com/spider-man-set-confirmed-to-have-no-commander-decks/">lack of Commander decks</a> for <em>Marvel's Spider-Man</em>. According to Rosewater, <em>Spider-Man</em> was too small of a set initially to make a Commander precon tied to the set. However, this doesn't rule out any chances of future Marvel properties getting a Commander tie-in.</p>
<p><a href="https://markrosewater.tumblr.com/post/790142262356099072/why-doesnt-spider-man-have-any-commander-decks">On a Blogatog post</a> from Rosewater dated Saturday, July 26th, 2025, a Tumblr user asked the designer why we weren't getting Commander decks for the upcoming <em>Marvel's </em><em>Spider-Man</em>. To this, Rosewater replied:</p>

We had some ability to adapt it, but there simply wasn’t the ability timewise to add additional products that weren’t originally planned. There will be Marvel-themed Commander decks made in the future.</p></blockquote>

<p>This dispels many doubts of there being thematic Commander precons based on Marvel in the future. However, it also sheds more light on <em>Spider-Man</em>. The interaction shown above highlights that the set was much smaller than it is now. This, in turn, gives the implication that <em>Marvel's Spider-Man</em> was slated to have Beyond Boosters. Because <em>Universes Beyond: Assassin's Creed</em> was largely seen as a commercial failure for players, players today speculate that this upcoming set changed its tune at the last minute to accommodate that shift.</p>
<p>While we won't be getting Commander decks for your friendly neighborhood web-slinging superhero, Rosewater has assured players that Marvel Commander decks will come in some capacity. Below is a very short shortlist of possible Marvel properties we may get Commander decks for:</p>
