Deck Tech: The Muckslinger Gang

<p>This past weekend during Gen Con, Wizards of the Coast revealed the contents of <em>Mystery Booster Commander Edition</em>, a new Mystery Booster product only obtainable during MagicCon events (and in Festival in a Box products to come). This reveal showcased a total of 60 new Commander-legal legendary cards, all usable as commanders. Let's look at all of these awesome cards!</p>
<h2><em>Mystery Booster Commander Edition</em> New White Cards</h2>

<p>There are (at least!) two important things to note with these new reveals. One is that there is an absolute glut of new planeswalker commanders. This will surely make Superfriends decks very happy. The second thing is that there are so many deep cuts in the lore among these cards that the diehard lore fans (or, as they prefer, "Vorthoses") are already going mad over this release. But in the meantime, let's move on with blue!</p>

<p>There are eight cards in this subset from the release that have the "rulebreaker" mechanic. Tolabow, Loch Rascal was revealed early on, and there was some confusion about how it actually works. So, Wizards of the Coast has provided functional errata to the card to allow one additional color altogether, and the card's Oracle text references color identity rather than color. <a href="https://magic.wizards.com/en/news/announcements/update-to-tolabow-loch-rascals-rules-text" target="_blank" rel="noopener">You can read about that errata here!</a></p>

<p>There was for a long time an issue with getting Brandon Sanderson's <em>Magic</em> novel, <em>Children of the Nameless</em>, out to readers. I am unsure if that still stands, but <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Miss Highwater" href="#" target="_blank">Miss Highwater</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> is a character from that novel, which bodes well for the book itself, because it's an excellent read.</p>

<p>Regarding two cards in above, <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Sifa Grent" href="#" target="_blank">Sifa Grent</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> was, like <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Miss Highwater" href="#" target="_blank">Miss Highwater</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, a card that was in some degree of dispute. IDW Comics had the rights to Sifa, just like they had the rights to <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Dack Fayden" href="#" target="_blank">Dack Fayden</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>. Things must have changed!</p>
<p>The other card in question, Tsagan, Raider Warlord, is from the Alchemy format on <em>Magic: The Gathering Arena</em>! There is hope, people!</p>

<p>On Friday, July 17th, the good folks of Wizards of the Coast revealed a ton of new information at MagicCon Amsterdam. This specific article will delve into the future of in-universe <em>Magic</em> through the end of 2027. (For more information on <em>Reality Fracture</em>, you can visit <a href="https://edhrec.com/articles/reality-fracture-reveals-from-magiccon-amsterdam-panel/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">the other article</a> we released on MagicCon Amsterdam alongside this one!)</p>
<p>So, it's important to keep in mind that with very new <em>Magic</em> information, such as what's to follow in this article, there are no cards to showcase for these sets, at least not yet. We do, however, have a bunch of cool new images for card art and even a few concept art pieces for the sets. So with that, let's dive in... <em>literally</em>!</p>

<p>For the first time since a <em>Future Sight</em> cameo in <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Narcomoeba|FUT|54" href="#" target="_blank">Narcomoeba</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> and a <em>Planechase</em> Plane card (Iquatana ultimately unrelated), we are headed under the sea! And while we cannot promise we won't get any hot crustacean bands... yet... <em>Nauctis: The Sunken Realm</em> is assuredly a fully submerged plane of existence with a completely underwater setting to it. So who knows? We may actually see several references to famous underwater tropes. As this is a completely new setting, there's really no telling what to expect here. However, we have it on good authority that Wizards wanted Nauctis to be high-fantasy, but submerged.</p>

<p>Now, there's something I kind of buried the lede on here. By opting to give in to my urge to make a joke about "literally diving in", I kind of neglected the timeline of things. There is one really big release before any of this <em>Nauctis</em> nonsense, and that's even more chaotic <em>Mystery Booster</em> fun! <em>Mystery Booster Commander Edition</em> is the next installment in the <em>Mystery Booster</em> lineup of products. It features what you'd generally expect from the product line, plus a nonzero number of new cards. You heard that correctly; this product has new cards in it. And, we have two previews to show you from the MagicCon Amsterdam panel!</p>

<p><em>Mystery Booster Commander Edition</em> will debut at GenCon this year, but will roll out in 2027 at the MagicCon events lined up then, as well as in the Festival in a Box products that you can find around that time at the <a href="http://secretlair.wizards.com" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Secret Lair</a> webstore.</p>

<p>Due to some shenanigans that stem from the overarching storyline of the next arc, Ikoria is slated to invade Kamigawa. The result? Mechs versus kaiju! This is going to be a set for the ages, and in all seriousness, we are <em>stoked</em> for it. Again, we don't have cards to show you, but there is a a bit of concept art and some completed artwork to showcase here, below:</p>

<p><em>Zhalfir</em> is a storied world from <em>Magic</em>'s long history. Originally, Zhalfir was featured in the <em>Mirage</em> block. During the first Phyrexian Invasion (of 2001's <em>Invasion</em> set), the Planeswalker Teferi <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Teferi&#039;s Protection" href="#" target="_blank">phased</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> Zhalfir out of existence to protect it from the Multiversal threat. He tried to phase it back in, which backfired, partly causing the events of <em>Time Spiral</em>. Eventually, after all manner of plotlines, Zhalfir was swapped into existence with New Phyrexia, fittingly ending that menace and allowing Zhalfir to exist once more.</p>
<p>Now, we have the first set that's set in Zhalfir, the plane, rather than Zhalfir, the Dominarian continent. The team at Wizards of the Coast consulted a lot of cultural sensitivity consultants to get this African-inspired setting just right, and from the concept art we've seen, it looks really great. <p>Running from June 20th through June 22nd, MagicCon Las Vegas is just around the corner! While badges are currently on sale, some people understandably can't make it to Nevada for a <em>Magic: The Gathering</em> convention. What's a <em>Magic</em> player to do? Well, tomorrow, you can fret much less about fear of missing out on the convention! MagicCon Las Vegas's <a href="https://magic.wizards.com/en/products/festival-in-a-box">Festival In A Box</a> goes on sale on Monday, May 19th at 9 AM Pacific Time (or Noon Eastern Time).</p>
<p>But what does this event's Festival In A Box contain? Read on, and we'll outline it for you.</p>
<h2>Festival In A Box Contents</h2>
<p>The Festival In A Box for MagicCon Las Vegas has a few really cool things going for it. There's a <em>Mystery Booster 2</em> booster box, exclusive promotional cards, and even a super-exclusive <em>Secret Lair</em> drop! Let's dive into the particulars:</p>
<h3><em>Mystery Booster 2</em></h3>
<p>To start, the Festival In A Box package contains <span style="box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">an <em>MB2</em> box</span>. This set is a conglomerate of practically all sets up to a certain point, with some of the wildest cards from each within its bounds. Beyond this, each pack has card slots for "Futureshifted" cards (AKA cards with the special frame from <em>Future Sight</em>), white bordered reprints, and even a playtest card! There's even a slim (yet still nonzero) chance that you could find foil cards that, financially, could make up a large chunk of the cost of the package.</p>
<p>Truly, <em>Mystery Booster 2</em> is a unique Limited experience, to say nothing of how awesome many of the reprints in the set are. <p>The next thing we'll discuss is <em>Slay the Day</em>, the <em>Secret Lair</em> drop exclusive to this Festival In A Box. This drop contains four cards with stunning art illustrated by <a href="https://craigdrakeart.com/"><strong>Craig Drake</strong></a>. The cards in this drop are:</p>

<h2>Festival In A Box Details</h2>
<p>Last year's Festival In A Box for MagicCon Las Vegas was priced at $249.99. However, prices have since shifted for previous events, and this one may cost closer to $200 based on content and precedent. The verdict is currently out, so it could honestly go either way. You'll be able to order the Festival In A Box on May 19th at 9 AM Pacific Time, or Noon Eastern Time. The sale will go up on the official <a href="https://secretlair.wizards.com/"><em>Secret Lair</em></a> website.</p>
