Hey nerds! With the release of Reality Fracture, we're introduced to 32 new rare and mythic commanders from the main set and preconstructed deck. While many people ask what's the most powerful, I prefer to ask how fun are they.

Of course, each person's definition of fun differs, which means I'll rate a commander lower or higher than you. That doesn't mean I think it's bad or you're bad for playing them.

The ranks are as follows:

• Want to Build: I'm interested in building these commanders. Their effect is either unique or a new take on an old mechanic.
• Fun: These are commanders I'm not going to build in paper, but I'm excited to see at the table. Commanders end up here if I already have a deck with a similar theme I like more, or they're monocolor.
• Could be Fun: Commanders in this tier are often generically powerful and don't pull you in a single direction, but because of that, it allows you to build weird strategies with a powerful engine, or provides unique build paths.
• Not Fun: This is usually reserved for older commanders who are seven-mana vanilla creatures, something way too jank, or are too salt-inducing for my taste. They're usually fine in the 99 of decks though.
• Support Piece: This tier is for commanders that while not salt-inducing or jank, are meant to support strategies, rather than lead them.

As stated above, this article will only be looking at the rare and mythic commanders. Wizards has been printing more uncommon commanders and most of them are support pieces. If you'd like me to cover specific uncommon commanders in the future, let me know in the comments below.

The Commanders of Reality Fracture

Dack Fayden, Helping HandDack Fayden, Helping Hand

The Greatest Thief in the Multiverse is giving away everything. After reading him a few times, I think Dack is a fun commander. You'll benefit from any enters triggers since the creatures do enter, then change control. Then you can blink those creatures, returning them to you.

Liliana the FaultlessLiliana the Faultless

I love Lifegain decks and Liliana is great at gaining life. She comes down early, and is easy to recast the first few times. The biggest issue is she's monocolored. Mono-white isn't as bad as it once was, but you still lose access to some powerful support pieces.

Lyra, Archangel of DawnLyra, Archangel of Dawn

A great addition to any Angel deck. This version of Lyra doesn't have lifelink, so you'll need additional enablers. I'd build Lyra as an Angel and Cleric typal deck so you can play Soul WardenSoul Warden effects and low to the ground Angels.

Ob Nixilis, the AscendedOb Nixilis, the Ascended

At seven mana, Ob Nixilis has an underwhelming ability from the command zone. I'd happily play this in a Blink or PolymorphPolymorph deck. I could see him at the helm of a Lifegain deck.

Lyra, Tolarian ArchangelLyra, Tolarian Archangel

We've seen several Card Draw commanders that focus on drawing one additional card, but never three. This might seem like a lot, but it should be easy to trigger Lyra at least once or twice a turn cycle. This is a surprise Want to Build commander.

Samut, Tyrant of NaktamunSamut, Tyrant of Naktamun

I'm not interested in building this Samut for causal Commander. Her ability is incredibly strong and I'll be happy to play her in the 99. She's just not that exciting as a commander.

Avacyn, Angel of HorrorAvacyn, Angel of Horror

A great support piece for a Big Mana or Reanimation deck. Sacrifice decks tend to be lower to the ground, and this effect while powerful, isn't exciting if you're playing it fairly.

Gideon the OathlessGideon the Oathless

He's back and he's fine. If you have a lot of Token or Planeswalker decks in your meta, Gideon is a great silver bullet. Otherwise, nothing fancy going on here.

Jhoira, Weatherlight CorsairJhoira, Weatherlight Corsair

A solid Theft deck commander that suffers from being a single color. I'll happily slot her into my Xanathar, Guild KingpinXanathar, Guild Kingpin deck. I'm happy to see she also triggers on attack and not just on enter.

Liliana the RepentantLiliana the Repentant

This Liliana is straightforward and works great as a Reanimation commander. Like many of the monocolored commanders, I'm excited to try it in the 99 of a deck, instead of at the helm. I just want access to more colors and a more interesting ability.

Venser, Fervent ForgerVenser, Fervent Forger

Red Venser is too expensive and way too telegraphed as a commander. His ability is fun, but I want to cheat it into play with Sneak AttackSneak Attack, not cast him for six mana.

Denzilore FateholdDenzilore Fatehold

I have no doubt Denzilore Fatehold will be an incredibly popular commander. His abilities can grow a board quickly by just playing the game. For me, he's too simple. But knowing Magic players, I'm sure I'll be proven wrong.

Uldaros TheorixUldaros Theorix

My initial impression was Uldaros was rather uninspiring. But then I remembered how much fun I have casting spells like Dance with CalamityDance with Calamity and Aminatou's AuguryAminatou's Augury. He isn't quite the same, but casting free spells is usually fun.

Rakdos has a new Infect commander and she's going to ruin your evening. I'm ready to play against both a small creature deck and the most toxic deck in the world. This is a prime example of could be fun.

Over the last few years, we've seen an increase in Gruul Artifact commanders. While Aerid isn't the most inspiring, they'll be a great addition to Roxanne, Starfall SavantRoxanne, Starfall Savant or Kibo, Uktabi PrinceKibo, Uktabi Prince deck.

I'm so excited to have a new creature for my Colossal Dreadmaw deck. She's going to let low to the ground Lifegain decks accelerate into huge threats with ease. Also we have a Black LotusBlack Lotus token for Garth One-EyeGarth One-Eye.

Niv-Mizzet, Ghost CounselNiv-Mizzet, Ghost Counsel

Now we have a spooky Niv and he still draws you a ton of cards. Your Soul WardenSoul Warden draws you a card whenever any creature enters. He goes infinite immediately with Sheoldred, the ApocalypseSheoldred, the Apocalypse.

Vraska, the Cutting GlareVraska, the Cutting Glare

She's removal for a Lands deck. Nothing interesting here as a commander.

Tamiyo, Upriser CrownedTamiyo, Upriser Crowned

The monarch is my favorite multiplayer mechanic and Tamiyo is a great monarch commander. She disincentivize opponents from attacking you, but not in a way that's overly oppressive.

The Ur-SphinxThe Ur-Sphinx

It's like The Ur-DragonThe Ur-Dragon, but a Sphinx, and Esper. Their second ability will let you slowly build an army of Sphinx assuming you can cast him and he sticks around. Nine mana to cast this will be rough without green. Yennett, Cryptic SovereignYennett, Cryptic Sovereign is still my go-to Sphinx commander, but this is a close second.

Vraska, Soul of StoneVraska, Soul of Stone

I like this Vraska a lot more than Vraska, the Cutting GlareVraska, the Cutting Glare. She's great as a commander for Spellslinger or Artifacts. I'm glad the tokens she makes aren't just Treasures, but actually creatures that can attack.

Jace, Multiverse ArchitectJace, Multiverse Architect

I'm so excited to try Jace in his new preconstructed deck. Wizards has been knocking it out of the park with face commanders, and Jace is not exception. His +1 is rather uninspiring, but still card advantage. Thankfully, he can minus the turn he comes out so you don't need to wait a turn trying to protect him.

Nissa, Leyline TamerNissa, Leyline Tamer

A sans-green Landfall commander that costs seven mana is an interesting choice. I'm excited to see how people build Landfall without the usual green ramp spells. There are great options to ramp in white and with artifacts.

Codie, Ravenous CodexCodie, Ravenous Codex

Every set has their required WUBRG commander, but this time we got three. Codie solves my issue with Spellslinger decks by making it a creature-focused deck with powerful spells. Now we can copy Ancestral RecallAncestral Recall and draw six cards.

Karn, Gilded GuardianKarn, Gilded Guardian

The second five-color commander of the set and while less interesting than Codie, I love seeing a color matters artifact deck. He'll easily draw five cards and it's trivial to blink and recur him to draw multiple cards a turn.

Tam, the PossibilityTam, the Possibility

And finally we have Tam. I like that she cares about each planeswalker types, but she isn't a planeswalker and doesn't have a way to close out the game on her own.

Emrakul, the Exigent DoomEmrakul, the Exigent Doom

She goes into the 99 of Eldrazi or Big Mana decks. You'll want to exile her from your hand to ramp, not keep her in the command zone to untap your lands.

Ginger, Queen of SweetsGinger, Queen of Sweets

Another monarch commander, but this time colorless. Syr Ginger, the Meal EnderSyr Ginger, the Meal Ender was a surprisingly fun commander and I'm confident Ginger will be just as fun, if not more.

Karn, Argent DefenderKarn, Argent Defender

You could try building a Phyrexian DreadnoughtPhyrexian Dreadnought deck. Overall, Karn is a solid support piece for Stax or Planeswalker decks.

Memnarch, the WardenMemnarch, the Warden

Ten mana for a rather underwhelming effect in the command zone. I'm willing to be proven wrong. However, he's a great addition to Artifact or Sneak AttackSneak Attack decks. You'll need some form of haste to get maximum value.

Omnath, Locus of the VoidOmnath, Locus of the Void

Look what they did to my boy! We finally got the colorless Omnath and he's fine. It's a great call back to the original Omnath, Locus of ManaOmnath, Locus of Mana. But much like the original, his abilities are uninspiring.

Fun Rank: Support Piece

I've been looking forward to this set, and it hasn't disappointed. It introduced several commanders I'm excited to build around, with some powerful support pieces for existing decks. This set might be boomer bait, and it's working like a charm. As someone who's played Magic for almost two decades, I'm loving the call backs and reimagined commanders.
