Commander Spellbook uses data from several sites, including EDHREC and Scryfall.
To create an account on Commander Spellbook, you must first join the Commander Spellbook Discord.

Searching for Combos
Search by Word
Basic combo searching can be done by typing a query into the search bar, found either on the front page or on the top of any page.
The search bar functions similar to search engines such as Google.
Typing a word into the search bar will search for any combos where that word is found in the cards used for the combo.
Searching for "walking" will show all combos using Walking BallistaWalking Ballista, but also show combos for Walking AtlasWalking Atlas and Skullbriar, the Walking GraveSkullbriar, the Walking Grave.
Search Using a Specific Card
card="[name]" or card:"[name]"
This shows combos that only contain a specific card name. Ensure the name is typed correctly and fully as found in the card's oracle text.
Search Within a Color Identity
ci:[colors] or color:[colors]
color and ci both show combos that are within the specified color identity. The color identity can be specified using a combination of single characters (WUBRG and C for colorless) or common names for color pairings (such as Golgari for or Simic for ).You can use an equal sign instead of a colon to find combos that are exactly the specified color identity.
Search for Results
result:[text] or result=[result]
"result" lets you specify a desired result and find all combos that produce that result.
Using an equal sign (=) will show combos that have that exact result, where a colon (:) will show combos that have a result containing the specified text.
Using the query "result='Infinite damage'" will only show combos containing "Infinite damage", where "result:'infinite damage'" will show the same combos and combos including "near-infinite damage" and similar results.
Negations
-[query]
Adding a minus sign (-) before a query will search for all combos that don't meet the specified condition.
An example being that "-ci=b" will show all combos that aren't exactly black in color identity.
Quantifiers
=, <, > (in some combination)
The quantifiers =, < and > can be used with most queries involving numbers to show results equal to, less than or greater than the specified number. <= and >= are also supported for inclusive queries. Quantifiers can also be used for color identities.
Search by Format
legal:[format]
While Commander Spellbook is focused on the Commander format, you can specify another Magic format to show combos legal in that format using the "legal" keyword.
By default, all searches have "legal:commander" added to them, which will be omitted if a different format is specified. Negations can be added to show combos not legal in a format.
Search by Price
cardkingdom<=[$], cardmarket<=[$] or tcgplayer<=[$]
All three of these queries allow filtering combos based on their cost using data from one of three card markets.
Note that the specified dollar amount must be a whole number, meaning decimals cannot be used.
Search by Bracket
bracket<=[#]
The "bracket" keyword filters combos based off the provided bracket. Brackets are automatically generated, and may not be entirely accurate for every situation.
Search by Number of Cards
cards=[#]
"cards" will filter combos based off the number of cards they use. Every combo will contain at least two listed cards.
The advanced search tool provides many options to refine your search to find specific combos. The tool contains many of the syntax discussed in this guide, along with some other options to easily tailor a search.
The syntax guide also provides many more syntax options to use, and can be a useful resource for refining a search to a specific purpose.
Commander Spellbook uses several forms of terminology to describe Magic actions and combo results.
Some terminologies are commonplace among Magic cards and players, while others are tailored specifically for Commander Spellbook.
A list of the most common terminology used on Commander Spellbook can be found here.
The Find My Combos tool allows you to input a deck list and see what combos are contained in the deck, and what combos are close to being included.
The tool can be accessed on the footer or any page, or from the homepage by clicking the "Find My Combos" button.
Once accessed, a form will be presented where commander(s) and a deck list can be specified.
You can also instead paste a decklist URL from many popular deck building sites, such as Archidekt or Moxfield, and have the form auto-populate.
If the deck isn't being used for Commander, you can also change the format to show combos legal in the format the deck is designed for. Once you're ready, click the "Submit" button.
After submitting, you'll be presented with a list of combos found in the deck (if any exist). There's also a tab that will estimate the bracket of the deck, and any justification for the bracket if applicable.
Below the list of combos found in your deck will be a list of potential combos. These combos will use card(s) already found in your deck, but will require one or more card(s) to be added for the combo to function, highlighted in red below.
This section will contain combos that fit within the deck's established color identity.
If you're open to expanding the color identity of the deck and/or changing commanders, two more sections will exist below the Potential Combos section, detailing combos that can be added with additional cards, different commanders and/or different color identities.
Navigating a Combo Page
Each combo requires several pieces to execute, with some combos requiring far more than others. Here's the pieces you need to consider when prospecting combos:
Cards
Each combo page will start with the cards needed for the combo. The page will have the cards named at the top, and images of the cards below.
Not all card names may be listed if the combo has a large amount of cards, but the images will always show regardless. If any templates are used, they will also show in the images.
Initial Card States
This section details where the cards must be located, and basic conditions those cards need to have achieved.
In the above example, Eirdu must be on the battlefield as Isilu, Carrier of Twilight before the combo can be executed.
Common conditions also include cards not having summoning sickness or needing to have a certain amount of power.
Easy and Notable Prerequisites
Prerequisites are other conditions that must be met for the combo to function. These can reference cards in the combo or simply be other game conditions outside the needed cards.
Easy prerequisites tend to be conditions that are easily achievable by the average deck.
Notable prerequisites tend to require more work, and may need an additional card or additional turns to execute in some circumstances.
Mana Needed
The mana needed to execute the combo. By default, the mana needed is assumed to be a one-time cost unless otherwise specified.
This field may contain conditions where more or less mana may be required, usually by controlling more permanents or meeting other conditions.
Once all the pieces are assembled, it's time to execute the combo.
Steps
The next and generally largest section of a combo is the steps, where a step-by-step breakdown is given on executing the combo.
This section details all the in-game actions, notable triggers, and mana payments needed for the combo to work as intended.
If a combo can be repeated, the steps generally end with a "Repeat" statement, sometimes with a step number, so the loop can be preformed again.
Results
This section details the results of performing the combo correctly. Each line is a separate result which can be used to provide notable benefits.
Results can range from standalone game-ending results (like infinite damage) to helper results (like infinite death triggers) which can be used by certain Magic cards for additional effect. In the case of locks, this section will also detail what the lock does.
Notes
This section details any other considerations or warnings about the combo. This can include ways to save mana, add new results, or constraints on the number of loops you can preform. Some combos may not have a Notes section.
Each combo page contains a range of other data relating to the combo.
Metadata
This section contains data about how many decks run the combo using EDHREC data. If a combo is a lock, that will also show in this section.
Bracket Tag
The estimated bracket the combo could be placed into using a set of criteria dictated by the Commander bracket system.
If any factors pushing the combo into bracket 2 or higher are found, they will be listed in this section. These are automatically generated, and are simply meant to be a guide.
Format Legality
The legality of the combo in each of the listed formats. Legalities are automatically generated using Scryfall data.
Color Identity and Pricing
The color identity of the combo, found at the top, using the mana symbols for each color (or colorless, respectively).
Below the color identity shows the price of each combo from different card vendors using the cheapest legal print for each card.
Some combos will have variants, which are alternate ways to perform the same combo, usually by swapping one or more cards for functional equivalents.
One such example is taking a combo that uses Soul WardenSoul Warden and using Soul's AttendantSoul's Attendant instead.
If a combo has variants available, they will be listed towards the bottom of the combo page, below the Bracket Tag section.
The number of variants will be presented, along with the variants that have the changed card(s) highlighted. Visually, this section will appear similar to a normal search page.
At the bottom of the variant list, there will be a button that will show all variants to a combo when clicked. From here, you can perform a custom sort and easily view all variants a combo has.
Each combo has several buttons that allow you to copy a combo's link or share a combo using social media sites like Facebook. These can be found above the Legality section on each combo page.
There's also an option to embed a combo, which is found above the social media buttons:
Clicking this button will provide code which can be inputted into a website for a combo preview to display. When used, the preview looks something like this:
Combo and Update Submissions
To submit a new combo to Commander Spellbook, first ensure that the combo you wish to submit is in its most simplest form, and that the simplest form doesn't already exist on Commander Spellbook. If it doesn't exist, follow these steps to submit a new combo.
First, click the "New Combo Submission" button found in the footer of any page, which'll take you to the Submit a Combo form.
If you aren't logged into Commander Spellbook, you'll be prompted to do so before being redirected.
Once on the form, you can input all the necessary information for the combo, including cards, steps, results, etc.
You can also denote whether the combo uses one or more spoiled cards from upcoming sets or whether the combo is a variant of a pre-existing combo. Once you've inputted all the necessary information, click the "Submit Combo" button at the bottom to finish.
Once you've made your submission, an editor will review it and decide whether to accept or reject the submission.
You can see this decision in the Commander Spellbook Discord server in the #combo-changelog channel, where you'll be pinged after a decision is made.
If your combo is accepted, you'll also see in this channel when it's uploaded to the site. If your combo is rejected, you'll be given a reason why it was rejected.
If you see a combo on Commander Spellbook that needs updated, possibly due to typographical mistakes, wrong steps or missing results, you can use the Submit an Update form to do this.
This form can be found in the footer of any page, directly below the link for a new combo submission.
You can also access this form directly from a combo page by clicking the "Report an Error with this Combo" button, found below the Pricing buttons.
Similar to the New Combo Submission page, you must be logged in before accessing the Submit an Update page.
Once on the form, you can specify the class of error with the combo, such as whether the combo doesn't function, has a spelling error, or is missing results among others.
Then, you can add the variant ID for the combo in question, which will be automatically populated if you clicked the "Report an Error with this Combo" button.
The variant ID can be found in the page link as a string of numbers and dashes, in the form of: commanderspellbook.com/combo/[variant ID here].
After the variant ID(s) have been specified, detail the issue with each variant, and a possible fix (if possible).
Once submitted, an editor will review your update suggestion and either implement a fix or reject the suggestion with a provided reason.
You'll be notified in the Commander Spellbook Discord's #combo-changelog channel with the decision either way.
Submitting a variant of an existing combo follows the same basic steps as submitting a new combo, but can be made far easier by clicking the "Submit a Variant of this Combo" button found on each combo page.
When pressed, the button will redirect you to the New Combo Submission form, but will autofill the information from the combo you were viewing.
Then, you can simply change the cards for the new variant, as well as steps and other combo parts as necessary, and then submit.
You'll be notified the same as a New Combo Submission once an editor has reviewed your submission.
