EDHREC's March Commandness Bracket Tournament continues to round two today! In this article, we'll look at who won the matchups from round one in the North conference, and kick off the voting for round two.
But first, in case you missed the announcement article explaining what this all is, head here to get the lowdown. TL;DR, we're doing a bracket system tournament, but instead of college basketball teams, we're battling the top 64 new commanders from the last five years.
And you decide the winner by voting.
We're well into the tournament now, but if you still want to grab your bracket to print and fill out, head here. If you wanna share your bracket picks or chat with other people on socials about the tournament, use hasthtag #RECMadness.
North Conference - Round One Winners
Before we get into round two for the North conference, let's take a look at the winners of round one.
Match One - Y'shtola, Night's BlessedY'shtola, Night's Blessed vs Aminatou, Veil PiercerAminatou, Veil Piercer
Winner: Y'shtola (66.7%)
This one's not at all surprising. Y'shtola recently became the #5 commander of the last two years, so it's safe to say she's pretty popular.
Match Two - Flubs, the FoolFlubs, the Fool vs Zhulodok, Void GorgerZhulodok, Void Gorger
Winner: Flubs (62.5%)
Another one that's not terribly surprising. A three-colored commander up against a colorless one, even if they're only six spots apart on the top commanders list, is a tough matchup for the colorless. Flubs is also a bit more recent, and quite a bit more unique, so that may be affecting this vote.
Match Three - Chatterfang, Squirrel GeneralChatterfang, Squirrel General vs Eriette of the Charmed AppleEriette of the Charmed Apple
Winner: Chatterfang (62.4%)
The Squirrel took this one pretty handily. Everyone loves cute Squirrels, right?
Match Four - Ulalek, Fused AtrocityUlalek, Fused Atrocity vs Captain N'ghathrodCaptain N'ghathrod
Winner: Captain N'ghathrod (57.1%)
This match was a lot closer than the previous three. Honestly, I was hoping Ulalek would win so I wouldn't have to keep typing N'ghathrod through this tournament. Remembering how many aitches are in his name is a real pain in the
Match Five - Bello, Bard of the BramblesBello, Bard of the Brambles vs Ghyrson Starn, KelermorphGhyrson Starn, Kelermorph
Winner: Bello (60.5%)
I honestly thought Ghyrson Starn was gonna take this one. Thankfully Bello's win doesn't tank my bracket too hard.
Match Six - Vivi OrnitierVivi Ornitier vs Alela, Cunning ConquerorAlela, Cunning Conqueror
Winner: Vivi (52.9%)
This was way, way closer than I thought it was gonna be. But I failed to recognize that, for as many people that love playing broken commanders like Vivi, there's just as many people that hate playing against those broken commanders. And those people vote too.
But in the end, Vivi still pulled out a win.
Match Seven - Kefka, Court MageKefka, Court Mage vs Obeka, Splitter of SecondsObeka, Splitter of Seconds
Winner: Kefka (51.7%)
Obeka took an early lead in this Grixis matchup, but over the last day Kefka picked up enough votes to overcome the time splitter.
Match Eight - The Wise MothmanThe Wise Mothman vs Ureni of the UnwrittenUreni of the Unwritten
Winner: The Wise Mothman (60.6%)
This was definitely a tough matchup for Ureni, especially with Wise Mothman surging in popularity right now.
