I’m Levi from <em>The Thought Vessel</em> and this is <em>Hidden Gems</em>, the series on EDHREC that celebrates the cards that are flying under the radar for certain commanders.</p> <p>Today, we are looking for hidden gems for a commander that has powered its way into not only being the top commander for its creature type, but also the top commander for its color identity of mono-white. Of course, I am talking about the Angel <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Giada, Font of Hope" href="#" target="_blank">Giada, Font of Hope</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>.</p> <p>As a reminder, in order for a card to be considered a Hidden Gem, it can only appear in 15 percent or less of Giada’s decks on EDHREC. Before we get into our list, let’s first look at what this commander actually does.</p> <div class="edhrecp__cards"><div class="edhrecp__card-container" name="Giada, Font of Hope"></div></div> <h2>The Commander</h2> <p>I have a neighbor who is getting into <em>Magic: The Gathering</em> and Commander. He has bought precons in the past, but he’s at the point where he is brewing his own Commander decks. When I asked him what he was thinking about brewing, he told me he was going to put together an <a href="https://edhrec.com/tags/angels">Angels</a> deck.</p> <p>I asked if he was building around Giada, and he was surprised that I was able to guess who his commander was going to be. From the outside looking in, this is an impressive guess, but most Commander players would’ve made it. Yes, Giada is the most popular Angels commander, but it’s also far and away the best in class for this theme.</p> <p>Giada is a 2/2 Angel with flying and vigilance for two mana. It can tap for one mana if we are using that mana to cast an Angel spell. Every time we have an Angel enter the battlefield, it gets a +1/+1 counter for every Angel that was already on the battlefield.</p> <p>This is incredibly powerful for multiple reasons. First, this is a two mana commander that produces mana in a typal strategy that plays a lot of higher mana value creatures. We have an early turn play consistently and can guarantee ourselves a ramp spell every game. The replacement effect that adds +1/+1 counters gives us the roadmap for what the rest of the deck should look like because it’s the kind of ability we can build a winning strategy around.</p> <p>Finally, as a flying, vigilant creature, we can attack for chip damage early and often with our commander to whittle down life totals and make it easier to close things out later on.</p> <p>While other commanders like <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Kaalia of the Vast" href="#" target="_blank">Kaalia of the Vast</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> or <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Sigarda, Font of Blessings" href="#" target="_blank">Sigarda, Font of Blessings</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> offer more colors and options, they simply can’t match the value that Giada brings to the table. If Wizards of the Coast decided to print an absolutely broken mono-white legendary Angel for Commander in the future, odds are people would simply put it in the 99 of Giada instead of building it as its own deck.</p> <p>It’s always a bit more of a challenge to find hidden gems for typal decks because so many of their best cards are obvious inclusions. I don’t have to tell you that you should play something like <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Inspiring Overseer" href="#" target="_blank">Inspiring Overseer</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> as an early turn Angel to draw a card and get the engine rolling, as 55 percent of Giada decks have already figured this out. But there are always cards that deserve recognition nonetheless. We start with an honorable mention.</p> <div class="edhrecp__cards"><div class="edhrecp__card-container" name="Sword of Hearth and Home"></div></div> <h3>Honorable Mention: <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Sword of Hearth and Home" href="#" target="_blank">Sword of Hearth and Home</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> (5.2%)</h3> <p><span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Sword of Hearth and Home" href="#" target="_blank">Sword of Hearth and Home</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> is a universally powerful card for nearly every Commander deck, so this shouldn’t come as much of a surprise. Equipping the artifact onto a creature gives it +2/+2 and protection from green and white. This would keep our commander safe from <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Swords to Plowshares" href="#" target="_blank">Swords to Plowshares</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> and <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Beast Within" href="#" target="_blank">Beast Within</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, both of which are in the top ten most popular cards in the entire format.</p> <p>When we deal combat damage, we can tutor up a basic land and blink one of our creatures. The land will help us get to our bigger Angels faster, and blinking Angels in Giada decks is a mechanic that really deserves more attention than it gets. Taking our early turn Angels with one or two counters and resetting them to five or more counters is a great way to buff our board while also capitalizing on enter the battlefield effects some Angels have, like <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Angel of the Ruins" href="#" target="_blank">Angel of the Ruins</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>.</p> <h2>Hidden Gems for Giada, Font of Hope</h2> <div class="edhrecp__cards"><div class="edhrecp__card-container" name="Starfield Shepherd"></div></div> <h3>#10. <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Starfield Shepherd" href="#" target="_blank">Starfield Shepherd</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> (14.8%)</h3> <p>We’re not going to play <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Starfield Shepherd" href="#" target="_blank">Starfield Shepherd</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> because it’s flashy, but because it can smooth out our turns. Being able to cast it early for its warp cost is great to either get our land drop or a one mana creature. Giada decks are known to run creatures like <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Mother of Runes" href="#" target="_blank">Mother of Runes</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> and <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Esper Sentinel" href="#" target="_blank">Esper Sentinel</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>. A lot of lists will even play <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Serra Ascendant" href="#" target="_blank">Serra Ascendant</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>. Being able to use this tutor twice is great for a Giada deck as it really keeps our options open without feeling like an overpowered toolbox card.</p> <div class="edhrecp__cards"><div class="edhrecp__card-container" name="Heraldic Banner"></div></div> <h3>#9. <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Heraldic Banner" href="#" target="_blank">Heraldic Banner</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> (14.0%)</h3> <p>Let’s talk about mana curve theory in Commander. Typically, we don’t want to play a lot of cards at the same mana value as our commander unless they are incredibly strong. This is because our dedicated turn that we would have that amount of mana is already accounted for. While some players can get very strict with this rule, I see it as more of an opportunity for our deck. <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Heraldic Banner" href="#" target="_blank">Heraldic Banner</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> is a mana rock for three mana that gives all of our white creatures +1/+0. Since we are already playing Giada on turn two and a lot of our best Angels cost at least five mana, these kinds of anthem mana rocks are a nice turn three play with one mana left over to hold up something like <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Swords to Plowshares" href="#" target="_blank">Swords to Plowshares</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>. Getting both a ramp spell and an anthem on curve is the type of card we should look into. </p> <div class="edhrecp__cards"><div class="edhrecp__card-container" name="Tome of Legends"></div></div> <h3>#8. <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Tome of Legends" href="#" target="_blank">Tome of Legends</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> (9.0%)</h3> <p>It can be difficult to find a good card advantage engine in mono-white. We don’t want to play a lot of symmetrical card draw spells like <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Cut a Deal" href="#" target="_blank">Cut a Deal</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, because we're likely to be the problem as the table. We don't want to give our opponents resources when we are in the lead. Some of the more common options like <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Mentor of the Meek" href="#" target="_blank">Mentor of the Meek</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> don’t work that well with Angels, so we have to look elsewhere. We could of course add game changers to our deck like <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="The One Ring" href="#" target="_blank">The One Ring</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, but they are expensive and attract a lot of attention. So, cards like <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Tome of Legends" href="#" target="_blank">Tome of Legends</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> are a great alternative. Since Giada has flying and vigilance, we can usually find one player we can attack safely to keep adding page counters. At that point, the card would read, "Pay one mana, draw a card. Activate only once each rotation." It consistently lets us draw an extra card, but it isn’t impactful enough for our opponents to justify using a removal spell on it. That is the sweet spot.</p> <div class="edhrecp__cards"><div class="edhrecp__card-container" name="Angelic Sell-Sword"></div></div> <h3>#7. <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Angelic Sell-Sword" href="#" target="_blank">Angelic Sell-Sword</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> (7.4%)</h3> <p>You might’ve watched EDHRECast’s episode "<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9tr3Is_2ITo&amp;t=775s">Every Commander's Most UNDERRATED Card</a>," which I had a part in. We covered Angelic Sell-Sword in that video, and I still stand by it now. Every time a nontoken creature enters, we make a 1/1 Mercenary creature token, and when <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Angelic Sell-Sword" href="#" target="_blank">Angelic Sell-Sword</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> attacks, we draw a card if its power is six or greater. Thanks to Giada, it’s pretty easy to guarantee that’s always going to be the case since we can add +1/+1 counters when it enters. Once we get the counters, this card is simply a value engine that we can attack with.</p> <div class="edhrecp__cards"><div class="edhrecp__card-container" name="Angel of Condemnation"></div></div> <h3>#6. <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Angel of Condemnation" href="#" target="_blank">Angel of Condemnation</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> (6.6%)</h3> <p>Like <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Sword of Hearth and Home" href="#" target="_blank">Sword of Hearth and Home</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, we like adding a bit of a blink package to our deck to help reset our Angels’ counters. <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Angel of Condemnation" href="#" target="_blank">Angel of Condemnation</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> is a great card for this. As a 3/3 flying, vigilant creature, we can both attack and activate its ability. For three mana, we can exile a creature and return it to play on our end step. Note that we can exile any creature, not just ours. We can blink a flying blocker to get it out of the way or perhaps a Voltron commander to detach all of the equipment and auras attached to it. Since it can work on multiple levels, these are the kind of cards we want to add to our deck.</p> <div class="edhrecp__cards"><div class="edhrecp__card-container" name="Your Temple Is Under Attack"></div></div> <h3>#5. <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Your Temple Is Under Attack" href="#" target="_blank">Your Temple Is Under Attack</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> (5.5%)</h3> <p>While symmetrical card draw isn’t my favorite when we’re playing a deck where we’re going to be perceived as the threat, I’m willing to make an exception for <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Your Temple Is Under Attack" href="#" target="_blank">Your Temple Is Under Attack</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>. Being able to either draw two cards at instant speed or give all of our creatures indestructible for a turn is nice, as players are going to try to wipe the board as often as they can. It’s not the most exciting card, but we like versatile cards in this series.</p> <div class="edhrecp__cards"><div class="edhrecp__card-container" name="Mistveil Plains"></div></div> <h3>#4. <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Mistveil Plains" href="#" target="_blank">Mistveil Plains</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> (5.5%)</h3> <p>White does have some cards for graveyard recursion, but there’s a good chance we won’t draw into them every game based on how the average Giada list is constructed. <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Mistveil Plains" href="#" target="_blank">Mistveil Plains</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> gives us a chance to get some of our better creatures back into our deck. Once they are back in the deck, we can tutor them up or potentially draw into them on a later turn. Since this effect is tied to a land, the opportunity cost to play this card is practically zero.</p> <div class="edhrecp__cards"><div class="edhrecp__card-container" name="Everything Comes to Dust"></div></div> <h3>#3. <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Everything Comes to Dust" href="#" target="_blank">Everything Comes to Dust</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> (5.1%)</h3> <p>Board wipes are an essential part of Commander. There will come a time in most games when things would be far better for us if we simply wiped the board clean and everyone had to start over. What’s better than a fresh start for everyone, though, is a fresh start for just our opponents. <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Everything Comes to Dust" href="#" target="_blank">Everything Comes to Dust</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> is a high mana value board wipe at a whopping ten mana, but it also has convoke, so we can use our creatures to pay for some of the cost. When we convoke it with our Angels, it adds a layer of protection to our team. Everything Comes to Dust exiles all artifacts, enchantments, and creatures. The only exception is creatures that share a creature type with a creature that convoked to cast the spell. Some Angels see play in Commander outside of Angel typal decks, but there aren't a lot of Angels that are generic staples in Commander, so it’s going to be more effective in our Angel deck than it would be in a Human or Elf typal deck.</p> <div class="edhrecp__cards"><div class="edhrecp__card-container" name="Pyre of Heroes"></div></div> <h3>#2. <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Pyre of Heroes" href="#" target="_blank">Pyre of Heroes</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> (2.4%)</h3> <p>Let’s add some consistency to our deck. Angels have a lot of really strong effects, but their utility can be more sporadic than other creature types. One game <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Angel of Jubilation" href="#" target="_blank">Angel of Jubilation</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> is a silver bullet keeping an opponent stuck in place. The next game it’s an overcosted anthem effect. <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Pyre of Heroes" href="#" target="_blank">Pyre of Heroes</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> allows us to sacrifice one of our Angels to tutor up another Angel from our deck directly onto the battlefield that costs one mana more. This can turn a good Angel into a great one, or we can work our way toward our best Angels like <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Avacyn, Angel of Hope" href="#" target="_blank">Avacyn, Angel of Hope</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>.</p> <div class="edhrecp__cards"><div class="edhrecp__card-container" name="Flock Impostor"></div></div> <h3>#1. <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Flock Impostor" href="#" target="_blank">Flock Impostor</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> (0.4%)</h3> <p>Our final Hidden Gem for Giada will typically work better in decks that are taking advantage of enter the battlefield effects, but it is a nice inclusion even if that isn’t the case. To start, this is a three-mana Changeling that counts as an Angel and has flash. When it enters, we may return a creature we control to its owner’s hand. We can use this to return one of our smaller creatures to our hand so we can recast it and likely give it even more counters than it had before.</p> <p>We can also play this earlier than other Angels to get our Angel count higher. Defensively speaking, we can bounce an important Angel back to our hand that we were about to lose to spot removal or a board wipe. It’s a simple effect with plenty of options. It deserves more play than 0.4% of Giada decks.</p> <h2>Wrapping Up</h2> <p>And that’s our list of Hidden Gems for Giada. While I’m not a huge fan of dominant strategy commanders for typal decks, I do enjoy a good Giada list. Hidden Gems for Giada, Font of Hope

<p> Commander precons are a great entry-level item to help bring people into the format. Since <em>Magic </em>is a complicated game, being able to just pick up a fully playable deck out of the box is great for new, and even long-time players. However, sometimes the prices of those products can rise to unreasonable heights; which is where I come in! My name is <a href="https://linktr.ee/pillowfortmtg">Tyler 'Savesya' Bucks</a>, and I'm going to be showing off some pre-constructed decks that you can pick up right now for a bargain. As we go through this article, I'll be linking to each deck (feel free to click those blue underlined words) which'll take you to a page right <a href="https://edhrec.com/precon">here on EDHREC</a>. There you'll see the full list, possible upgrades and even a few options for where you can pick them up for yourself. So, let's kick things off with five decks that were designed to be a bit more budget friendly right off the shelves. </p>
<h2>The Two-Color Starter Commander Decks</h2>

Since that's the case, these might not be the for more enfranchised players, however they do still offer a great play experience. If you've been looking to get someone into the format, these are perfect for doing that. I'll briefly go into each deck, and show off an interesting card that's hidden in their 99s: <div class="edhrecp__cards"><div class="edhrecp__card-container" name="Isperia, Supreme Judge Gisa and Geralf Kardur, Doomscourge"></div></div> <a href="https://edhrec.com/precon/first-flight">First Flight</a>: Helmed by <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Isperia, Supreme Judge" href="#" target="_blank">Isperia, Supreme Judge</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, this deck is filled with flyers, and value pieces that support your air forces. <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Storm Herd" href="#" target="_blank">Storm Herd</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> is a wild inclusion here, but would definitely be fun for a new player to resolve, showing just how epic things can get in this format. <a href="https://edhrec.com/precon/grave-danger">Grave Danger</a>: This deck is led by the brother and sister duo of <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Gisa and Geralf" href="#" target="_blank">Gisa and Geralf</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, and looks to flood the board with an undead army. This list also has a bit of a graveyard sub-theme, which makes the classic Commander card <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Havengul Lich" href="#" target="_blank">Havengul Lich</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> a perfect fit for the 99. <a href="https://edhrec.com/precon/chaos-incarnate">Chaos Incarnate</a>: Here's my personal favorite from the bunch, which looks to sew mayhem around the table. <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Kardur, Doomscourge" href="#" target="_blank">Kardur, Doomscourge</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> sits in the command zone, just waiting to hit play and force people to attack. <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Titan Hunter" href="#" target="_blank">Titan Hunter</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> is a great sign-post card for this deck, since it shows just how important is to force creatures into combat. <div class="edhrecp__cards"><div class="edhrecp__card-container" name="Atarka, World Render Emmara, Soul of the Accord"></div></div> <a href="https://edhrec.com/precon/draconic-destruction">Draconic Destruction</a>: Now this is a deck for the fans of big stompy threats at heart. <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Atarka, World Render" href="#" target="_blank">Atarka, World Render</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> helms this deck, and pushes things in a Dragon-centric direction. To prove that point, <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Scourge of Valkas" href="#" target="_blank">Scourge of Valkas</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> is here to add all kinds of burn damage when your creatures hit the board. <a href="https://edhrec.com/precon/token-triumph">Token Triumph</a>: Finally, we have a deck lead by <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Emmara, Soul of the Accord" href="#" target="_blank">Emmara, Soul of the Accord</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, which is all about filling your battlefield with creatures. Since this commander and a lot of the deck can be deployed early, <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Camaraderie" href="#" target="_blank">Camaraderie</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> is a perfect late game card that refills your hand, gains you life, and buffs your board. </p>
<h2>Aetherdrift Commander Deck - <a href="https://edhrec.com/precon/living-energy">Living Energy</a></h2>

<p> <div class="edhrecp__cards"><div class="edhrecp__card-container" name="Saheeli, Radiant Creator Pia Nalaar, Chief Mechanic"></div></div> This is a deck that I'm a little bit surprised isn't more sought after, because it can really pack a punch out of the box. The main gameplan for this one is building up energy counters in order to copy your artifacts, and send them into combat. Which is a great combination of goals, since the more artifacts you cast, the more energy that <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Saheeli, Radiant Creator" href="#" target="_blank">Saheeli, Radiant Creator</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> makes. As you look over the contents of this list, you'll notice a whole lot of singles that don't usually find homes in a broad number of decks, but they put in plenty of work here. </p>

The other option for leading the deck is <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Arthur, Marigold Knight" href="#" target="_blank">Arthur, Marigold Knight</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, which offers an interesting way to cheat out more members of your team when you move to combat. This is another precon that you can consistently upgrade as time goes on, since every new creature you see in these colors could be added to the list. I'm so happy we're seeing a return of this product, because budget concerns are one of the biggest barriers of entry for new players. Plus, since they're all only one color, it'll hopefully lead to straight forward gameplay, since you won't have to worry about mana fixing. So, if you know someone who's been on the fence about trying this format, be sure to point them in the direction of one of these new decks towards the end of this year. </p>
<h2>My Final Thoughts on Budget Precons</h2>
<p> As many readers may already know, I make a whole lot of budget decks which are typically designed to cost less than most new precons. While I do stand behind all of those lists, I still often suggest that newer players buy one of these products if they like the commander, and are just getting into the format. Usually, these decks have higher priced singles hidden within them, as well as staple level cards that are good to have in your collection. Plus, you can usually go on YouTube and watch people play that exact deck in order to learn how it works out of the box. However, if you're not fully interested in the precon's playstyle, and just want to pick them up for value, you're usually better off simply buying the several cards you want from the list and letting the product stay on the shelf. So, whether you're just interested in having a precon in your collection, buying with an upgrade in mind, or looking for a good gift without breaking the bank, the decks in this list are perfect for you. <p>Angels are the iconic creature of <span class="mana-container-container"><span class="mana-container"><i class="ms ms-cost ms-w" style="margin-left: inherit !important;"></i></span></span>, representing the purity and order core to the color since <em>Alpha.</em> And since <em>Alpha,</em> they've come with flying in nearly every Angel printed. They tend to pair that keyword with either vigilance or lifelink, with more expensive Angels getting all three.</p>
<p>There are also some Angels that have other <span class="mana-container-container"><span class="mana-container"><i class="ms ms-cost ms-w" style="margin-left: inherit !important;"></i></span></span>-aligned keywords such as indestructible or the ability to exile opponents' permanents.</p>
<p>They primarily occupy the niche of having a mid-ranged cost with comparable stats, though more powerful archangels and notable characters tend to be stronger performers. Their value for their cost is often quite good and they have enough support with other creature types to be fielded consistently throughout the game.</p>

<p>Though firmly tied to <span class="mana-container-container"><span class="mana-container"><i class="ms ms-cost ms-w" style="margin-left: inherit !important;"></i></span></span>, "corrupted" or "fallen" Angels may appear as <span class="mana-container-container"><span class="mana-container"><i class="ms ms-cost ms-r" style="margin-left: inherit !important;"></i></span></span> or <span class="mana-container-container"><span class="mana-container"><i class="ms ms-cost ms-b" style="margin-left: inherit !important;"></i></span></span> depending on the circumstances surrounding their fall. There are also some that splash into <span class="mana-container-container"><span class="mana-container"><i class="ms ms-cost ms-g" style="margin-left: inherit !important;"></i></span></span> or <span class="mana-container-container"><span class="mana-container"><i class="ms ms-cost ms-u" style="margin-left: inherit !important;"></i></span></span>, though these are less common.</p>
<p>There are also multiple <span class="mana-container-container"><span class="mana-container"><i class="ms ms-cost ms-r" style="margin-left: inherit !important;"></i></span><span class="mana-container"><i class="ms ms-cost ms-w" style="margin-left: inherit !important;"></i></span></span> Angels representing a shield-maiden or valkyrie archetype. Or in some cases, wielders of "righteous fury" that focus on smiting enemies. As would be expected of <span class="mana-container-container"><span class="mana-container"><i class="ms ms-cost ms-r" style="margin-left: inherit !important;"></i></span><span class="mana-container"><i class="ms ms-cost ms-w" style="margin-left: inherit !important;"></i></span></span>, these Angels tend to be much more aggressive and trade keywords like lifelink in favor of haste or first strike.</p>

<h3>Angels Support Angels</h3>
<p>Being the iconic creature of <span class="mana-container-container"><span class="mana-container"><i class="ms ms-cost ms-w" style="margin-left: inherit !important;"></i></span></span>, Angels really have the ability to do anything white can. That's token generation, life gain, indestructability, permanent exiling, and ensuring a great defense. And due to how common they are across <em>Magic's</em> planes, there are a wide variety of Angels available to field in a deck.</p>
<p>Of the available Angels, most of them either directly scale with how many Angels you already have on the board or synergize with Angel abilities such as gaining life. Some even act to lower the cost of your other Angels or provide power and toughness bonuses.</p>
<p>It's therefore quite reasonable to make an entire deck of nothing but Angels, all of which build off of one another and enhance the strength of every other creature in your deck.</p>

<p>There's more to Angel support than just other Angels, though.</p>
<h3>The Human Element</h3>
<p>Humans have quite a bit of support for Angels, most notably in Human Clerics. This support is quite often one-way, with Humans or Clerics making Angels cheaper or gaining life that is then enhanced by an Angel's effect. There are two-way support streams, but primarily Clerics function as a support to the Angels.</p>
<p>That being said, Angels love creating and supporting Human Soldiers and Knights. These don't typically support Angels directly with abilities, but allow for a larger board state and takes pressure off acting directly with Angels.</p>
<p>Soldiers and Knights also tend to synergize with one another as well as Humans as a whole, meaning they can operate quite easily as a subtheme within an Angel deck.</p>

<h3>The Best Defense</h3>
<p>Angels tend to have equal power and toughness or a slightly higher toughness along with vigilance and flying. This means that they can defend against most creatures even if they attack and are able to survive blocking even mid-range creatures.</p>
<p>And that's before Angels start improving the stats of their fellow Angels.</p>
<p>It's quite easy to play defensively with Angels, given they're cheap and common enough to play multiple of while having enough weight behind them that they can actually defend you. Coupled with their token generation and in-built stat increases, Angels are capable of applying pressure while simultaneously keeping you safe.</p>
<p>In the case of targeted removal, <span class="mana-container-container"><span class="mana-container"><i class="ms ms-cost ms-w" style="margin-left: inherit !important;"></i></span></span> has instants that can protect your creatures. And all of the lifegain Angels have access to means that, should your defenses be breached, you won't have to worry about that any time soon.</p>

<h3>Play by the Rules</h3>
<p>The typical Angel expects you to play in accordance with a <span class="mana-container-container"><span class="mana-container"><i class="ms ms-cost ms-w" style="margin-left: inherit !important;"></i></span></span> game plan. It expects you to gain life, create many creature tokens, and to have a force of strong Angels leading your board. That's why so many Angels enhance how much life you gain, give a bonus to your creature tokens, or encourage big attacks with a group of fliers.</p>
<p>That means that in order to do anything other than assembling a large, defensive force with an orientation on gaining life, you'll need to purposely push the bounds of what Angels can do.</p>
<p><span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Atraxa, Praetors&#039; Voice" href="#" target="_blank">Atraxa, Praetors&#039; Voice</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> is a great example of this, where her ability to proliferate is not oriented around the standard Angel playbook. Certainly, +1/+1 counters are common to the creature type, but Atraxa as a creature, let alone a commander, is frequently geared towards poison counters. Or even -1/-1 counters!</p>

<p>There are odd and unusual Angels, but the vast majority of them support a playstyle conducive to <span class="mana-container-container"><span class="mana-container"><i class="ms ms-cost ms-w" style="margin-left: inherit !important;"></i></span></span>'s strengths. In order to allow for strategies more aligned with other colors, Angels need external assistance.</p>
<h3>Weak to Green</h3>
<p>Green hates flying creatures. Not only with the reach keyword, but also with anti-flying removal. <span class="mana-container-container"><span class="mana-container"><i class="ms ms-cost ms-g" style="margin-left: inherit !important;"></i></span></span>'s mana production outpaces the cost reductions of Angel support cards, meaning they can build a board faster than an Angel deck can.</p>
<p>Green creatures tend to have the trample keyword, which negates the advantage of token generation as a means to block powerful creatures with a single 1/1.</p>
<p>Angels won't always lose against such decks. <span class="mana-container-container"><span class="mana-container"><i class="ms ms-cost ms-g" style="margin-left: inherit !important;"></i></span></span> is just in the prime position to respond to all of Angels' greatest strengths. That said, the lifegain an Angel deck can produce often exceeds the damage a midrange <span class="mana-container-container"><span class="mana-container"><i class="ms ms-cost ms-g" style="margin-left: inherit !important;"></i></span></span> deck can.</p>
<p>And <span class="mana-container-container"><span class="mana-container"><i class="ms ms-cost ms-g" style="margin-left: inherit !important;"></i></span></span> rarely has removal that doesn't involve damage or destruction, meaning the indestructible keyword acts as an effective protector.</p>

<p><span class="mana-container-container"><span class="mana-container"><i class="ms ms-cost ms-g" style="margin-left: inherit !important;"></i></span></span> is a threat that Angel decks need to be aware of, rather than something they are unable to play around.</p>


<h2><span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Giada, Font of Hope" href="#" target="_blank">Giada, Font of Hope</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span></h2>

<p><span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Giada, Font of Hope" href="#" target="_blank">Giada, Font of Hope</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> is the <a href="https://edhrec.com/commanders" target="_blank" rel="noopener">fifteenth</a> most played commander at the time of this guide's writing.</p>
<p>As a 2/2 with flying and vigilance, Giada is already valuable enough to play for <span class="mana-container-container"><span class="mana-container"><i class="ms ms-cost ms-1" style="margin-left: inherit !important;"></i></span></span><span class="mana-container-container"><span class="mana-container"><i class="ms ms-cost ms-w" style="margin-left: inherit !important;"></i></span></span>. However, she isn't intended to be a commander that swings from the front.</p>
<p>Every other Angel you control enters with a +1/+1 counter on it for each other Angel you control, meaning at minimum your Angels are entering the battlefield with a single +1/+1 counter from Giada. This applies to all of your Angels, so Angel token generation quickly spirals out of control.</p>
<p>And Giada's ability to add <span class="mana-container-container"><span class="mana-container"><i class="ms ms-cost ms-w" style="margin-left: inherit !important;"></i></span></span> to cast Angel spells means you'll be able to fill your board even faster.</p>
<p>Giada is a fantastic support piece for Angel typal decks and is a lethal commander in terms of efficiency.</p>
<h2><span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Shilgengar, Sire of Famine" href="#" target="_blank">Shilgengar, Sire of Famine</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span></h2>

<p><span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Shilgengar, Sire of Famine" href="#" target="_blank">Shilgengar, Sire of Famine</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> is a 6/6 with flying that can sacrifice another creature to create a Blood token. If that sacrificed creature was an Angel, you create a number of Blood tokens equal to its toughness instead.</p>
<p>You can then spend <span class="mana-container-container"><span class="mana-container"><i class="ms ms-cost ms-wb" style="margin-left: inherit !important;"></i></span></span><span class="mana-container-container"><span class="mana-container"><i class="ms ms-cost ms-wb" style="margin-left: inherit !important;"></i></span></span><span class="mana-container-container"><span class="mana-container"><i class="ms ms-cost ms-wb" style="margin-left: inherit !important;"></i></span></span> and sacrifice six Blood tokens to return every creature in your graveyard to the field with a finality token as a Vampire.</p>
<p>Shilgengar works best in a deck marrying Angels and Vampires, given Blood tokens are intrinsically tied to the Vampire creature type. Multiple different Vampires benefit from and create Blood tokens, which in turn can be used to fuel Shilgengar's ability.</p>
<p>Both Angels and Vampires often have lifelink, and while Angels often benefit from flying and vigilance it's Vampires that can dip into keywords such as deathtouch.</p>
<p>There are certainly synergies present in a multi-type deck, but every card that supports Vampires or Blood tokens is a card that isn't supporting Angels directly. If Shilgengar is in an Angel-only deck, it has to be willing to sacrifice its more powerful Angels to get Blood tokens and then set up a Shilgengar activation to take out an opponent in a flying strike.</p>
<h2><span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Kaalia of the Vast" href="#" target="_blank">Kaalia of the Vast</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span></h2>

<p>Whenever <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Kaalia of the Vast" href="#" target="_blank">Kaalia of the Vast</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> attacks an opponent, you may put an Angel, Demon, or Dragon creature card from your hand onto the battlefield tapped and attacking that opponent.</p>
<p>This allows you to cheat out high-costed creatures for free and attack with them instantly, even if they don't have haste. This is weakest with Angels of the three creature types listed, as they most often have vigilance and don't have as many abilities that trigger upon dealing damage.</p>
<p>However, being able to play <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Archangel of Thune" href="#" target="_blank">Archangel of Thune</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> for free and then rapidly building your creatures' powers mid-attack can win games.</p>
<h2><span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Sigarda, Font of Blessings" href="#" target="_blank">Sigarda, Font of Blessings</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span></h2>

All other permanents you control gain hexproof, rendering them unable to be targeted by a significant amount of threats such as removal. On top of that, you may look at the top card of your deck and cast Angel or Human spells from it.</p>
<p>This effectively increases the size of your hand by one, given how internally synergistic Angels are and how many Humans support Angels. You will almost always want to play an Angel or Human you have access to, meaning any time one is revealed is useful for you.</p>
<p>This also allows effects such as scry or surveil to "choose" a card and add it to your hand, though these are less common to <span class="mana-container-container"><span class="mana-container"><i class="ms ms-cost ms-g" style="margin-left: inherit !important;"></i></span><span class="mana-container"><i class="ms ms-cost ms-w" style="margin-left: inherit !important;"></i></span></span> than other colors.</p>

<p>A four-mana 4/4, Atraxa comes with a host of keywords: flying, vigilance, deathtouch, and lifelink. But the star of this is its ability to proliferate at the beginning of your end step, adding additional counters to players or permanents. This was designed around and synergizes with poison counters, but it also works for +1/+1 counters. As such, Atraxa being an Angel that enhances your +1/+1 counters actually works quite well to support the traditional Angel strategy.</p>
<p>It's just that there are more efficient uses of a free proliferate trigger.</p>

<p>Which, in an Angel deck, really is not a problem!</p>
<p>Liesa is a 5/5 with flying and lifelink, meaning if it deals damage it instantly pays for its commander tax for a cast and a half. The main draw of Liesa, though, is that whenever a player casts a spell, they lose two life. This stacks multiple times per turn and also effects you, but it's a great tax to apply to the table in order to curtail combo engines or ward off a turn of big plays.</p>
<p>And with the fact that you can gain life to offset Liesa's commander tax, even if Liesa is destroyed you can always cast it again.</p>

<p>This is expensive, as <span class="mana-container-container"><span class="mana-container"><i class="ms ms-cost ms-4" style="margin-left: inherit !important;"></i></span></span><span class="mana-container-container"><span class="mana-container"><i class="ms ms-cost ms-r" style="margin-left: inherit !important;"></i></span></span><span class="mana-container-container"><span class="mana-container"><i class="ms ms-cost ms-w" style="margin-left: inherit !important;"></i></span></span><span class="mana-container-container"><span class="mana-container"><i class="ms ms-cost ms-w" style="margin-left: inherit !important;"></i></span></span> isn't trivial for a red and white deck - particularly if Gisela needs to be cast a second or third time, making it even more expensive. But it has a soft protection in halving damage dealt to it while doubling your offensive capabilities.</p>
<p>Gisela is particularly strong in a <a href="https://edhrec.com/tags/spellslinger" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Spellslinger</a> deck oriented around instants and sorceries intended to ping consistent damage through cards like <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Lightning Bolt" href="#" target="_blank">Lightning Bolt</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>.</p>

And depending on if they lack flying or reach for their creatures, they might not even be able to defend!</p>
<p>Aurelia expects you to attack often and aggressively, meaning it likely won't be able to take advantage of late-game Angel swarms piled with counters.</p>

But casting Bruna allows you to return an Angel or a Human from your graveyard to the battlefield, allowing you to return Gisela to the field if it was destroyed or discarded.</p>
<p><span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Brisela, Voice of Nightmares" href="#" target="_blank">Brisela, Voice of Nightmares</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> is a 9/10 with multiple keywords and a complete embargo on your opponents casting spells with mana value three or less. That's <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Murder" href="#" target="_blank">Murder</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Swords to Plowshares" href="#" target="_blank">Swords to Plowshares</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Opt" href="#" target="_blank">Opt</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, and many others. This then doubles the effectiveness of other Angels that grant +1/+1 counters upon an Angel entering the battlefield, meaning they then increase in value individually.</p>

<p>Any time you gain life from a creature with lifelink dealing damage, or any creature entering the battlefield while you have a <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Soul Warden" href="#" target="_blank">Soul Warden</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, will immediately and repeatedly makes every one of your creatures stronger. This can happen multiple times per turn; it can even happen on opponents' turns.</p>


<h2><span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="The Book of Exalted Deeds" href="#" target="_blank">The Book of Exalted Deeds</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span></h2>

<p>While certainly powerful, the activated ability isn't the main draw of the Book of Exalted Deeds. The ability to consistently produce Angels, given how easy it is to gain three life per turn, is where most of its concrete value lies. The Book is fairly cheap and can be played early in the game, producing a good number of tokens over time. Then you can exile it as an emergency option, though only at sorcery speed, should the need arise.</p>
<h2><span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Oketra&#039;s Monument" href="#" target="_blank">Oketra&#039;s Monument</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span></h2>

<p>While Angels don't have significant synergy with Warriors specifically, white creature token generation aligns with the strengths of Angels, regardless of their creature type. Many Angels give +1/+1 counters to all of your creatures or apply a static +1/+1 bonus, meaning any token generation will be powerful.</p>

This artifact can give flat value from granting a keyword to one of your other Angels such as <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Sephara, Sky&#039;s Blade" href="#" target="_blank">Sephara, Sky&#039;s Blade</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, even if it is quite expensive to equip.</p>
<p>The consistent token generation of creating more Angels also allows your creatures without vigilance to be able to attack without leaving you unguarded.</p>


<h2><span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Rampage of the Valkyries" href="#" target="_blank">Rampage of the Valkyries</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span></h2>

<p>This is a useful deterrent to your opponents targeting your Angels no matter your strategy, though it becomes much more aggressive if creating many Angel tokens. With more tokens, they can be used to block attackers and die intentionally, forcing opponents to sacrifice their creatures.</p>
<p>Alternatively, they make for a great source of self-sacrifice and grant a secondary benefit.</p>
<h2><span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Court of Grace" href="#" target="_blank">Court of Grace</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span></h2>

<p>Angel token production is core to the Angel strategy, and this is just one more means of achieving that. What makes it more unique is it making the monarch, which allows you to draw a card at your end step.</p>
<p>However, should any opponent deal combat damage to you, that opponent becomes the monarch. So not only does this enchantment assist in rote token generation, it also enhances your card draw while giving the means to maintain it.</p>
<h2><span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Angelic Accord" href="#" target="_blank">Angelic Accord</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span></h2>

<p>This triggers each end step, meaning any out-of-turn ability to gain life, such as defending with a creature with lifelink or triggering creatures' abilities that gain life, will count. Four life per turn is easy to achieve each of your turns, and your ability to hit it on your opponents' turns is dependent on your hand and board state.</p>


<h2><span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Anguished Unmaking" href="#" target="_blank">Anguished Unmaking</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span></h2>

Not only is it cheap, but it's flexible.</p>
<p>It can deal damage to a player or planeswalker, grant indestructible to your permanents for a turn, or give a creature double strike for a turn. Reflexive indestructibility is fantastic and most Angels don't get access to double strike, which gives this Charm a range of use-cases even outside of direct damage.</p>
<p>Normally it won't be used to ping an opponent for four, unless that would defeat the opponent, given how much flying pressure Angels can provide. But it is incredibly useful at taking out a troublesome planeswalker, or at least reducing their loyalty counters.</p>
<h2><span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Austere Command" href="#" target="_blank">Austere Command</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span></h2>

<p>Angels don't have many in-built abilities to remove artifacts or enchantments even if <span class="mana-container-container"><span class="mana-container"><i class="ms ms-cost ms-w" style="margin-left: inherit !important;"></i></span></span> can remove a number of permanents, so those are both fine options.</p>
<p>Taking out all creatures oftentimes isn't a bad option either. Angels have multiple means of providing indestructability to their creatures, meaning they would avoid destruction. This can allow an oppressive followup should you already have a base of Angels able to attack.</p>


<h2><span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Serra the Benevolent" href="#" target="_blank">Serra the Benevolent</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span></h2>

<p>Increasing Serra's loyalty counters by two for a +1/+1 across creatures with flying isn't bad given how many creatures with flying you'll be fielding, but it also isn't that great. It does offset the loss of loyalty counters to create a 4/4 Angel with flying and vigilance, which means you can rotate between those options at your leisure.</p>
<p>The final option is to gain an emblem that protects you from losing the game as a result of taking damage so long as you have a creature. This doesn't protect from alternative win conditions such as poison counters or even commander damage, but it can allow you to completely nullify entire strategies.</p>
<h2><span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Elspeth Resplendent" href="#" target="_blank">Elspeth Resplendent</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span></h2>

<p>By gaining a loyalty counter you can put a +1/+1 counter on a creature alongside a flying, first strike, lifelink, or vigilance counter, which allows your non-Angels to keep up and your Angels to level their keywords.</p>
<p>Elspeth can also look at the top seven cards of your library and put a permanent with a mana value of three or less on the field with a shield counter, which is an extra layer of protection even if it's not something expensive.</p>
<p>The final ability creates five 3/3 Angels with flying, which is a bit underwhelming in comparison to some of the other Angel token generation out there, but when built up with Elspeth's other abilities is still a viable option.</p>
<h2><span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Archangel Elspeth" href="#" target="_blank">Archangel Elspeth</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span></h2>

<p>This Elspeth gains loyalty counters by creating a 1/1 Soldier with lifelink. It can then put two +1/+1 counters on a creature and give it both flying as well as the Angel creature type. Then Elspeth can return all nonland permanents with mana value three of less from your graveyard to the battlefield.</p>
<p>The loop is usually that Elspeth creates a 1/1 Soldier with lifelink, converts it into a 3/3 Angel Soldier with flying and lifelink, and if you have enough creatures you can build up towards reclaiming your graveyard.</p>
<p>This Elspeth mostly makes existing Angel strategies more efficient, rather than augmenting them.</p>

<p><span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Vault of the Archangel" href="#" target="_blank">Vault of the Archangel</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> gives your creatures the ability to gain deathtouch and lifelink. While many Angels natively have lifelink, not all do. Particularly Angel tokens, which possess flying and less commonly get vigilance.</p>
<p>This not only makes your tokens more dangerous, but it also allows you to surge in life after a large attack. This synergizes with any effect that is reliant on a life total being above a certain threshold or anything that triggers off of gaining life.</p>

With how firmly entrenched in <span class="mana-container-container"><span class="mana-container"><i class="ms ms-cost ms-w" style="margin-left: inherit !important;"></i></span></span> Angels are, even those dipping into other colors, that will happen naturally and readily.</p>


<p>Angels tend to focus on either building "tall" or building "wide."</p>
<p>"Tall" Angel decks prioritize +1/+1 counters, life-dependent power and toughness increases, and certain keystone Angels to enhance even further. These are often non-Angel cards that nevertheless synergize well with Angels' strengths, such as <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Heliod, Sun-Crowned" href="#" target="_blank">Heliod, Sun-Crowned</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>. Heliod might be paired with <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Rodolf Duskbringer" href="#" target="_blank">Rodolf Duskbringer</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> and <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Liesa, Forgotten Archangel" href="#" target="_blank">Liesa, Forgotten Archangel</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> to have a small, easily-protected force of creatures that are a massive threat if left to grow unchecked.</p>

<p>"Wide" Angel decks focus on token generation. <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Lyra Dawnbringer" href="#" target="_blank">Lyra Dawnbringer</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> gives a small buff to all of your Angels that gets more powerful the more you have. <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Archangel of Thune" href="#" target="_blank">Archangel of Thune</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> functions similarly. <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Valkyrie Harbinger" href="#" target="_blank">Valkyrie Harbinger</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> creates more Angels that can then be augmented and supported by other cards in the deck.</p>
<p>These decks want to get many creatures on the board that they can then increase in power and attack en masse, with no individual creature being a linchpin.</p>

<p>Angels have a few means of alternative win conditions, though these are less reliant on building an entire deck of Angels around a non-traditional strategy and more so including a select few cards.</p>
<p><span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Angel of Destiny" href="#" target="_blank">Angel of Destiny</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> causes any damage your creatures deal to a player to cause you and them to gain that much life. At the beginning of your end step, if you have at least fifteen life more than your starting total, each player Angel of Destiny attacked this turn loses the game.</p>
<p>Paired with a commander like <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Aurelia, the Warleader" href="#" target="_blank">Aurelia, the Warleader</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, you can attack with Angel of Destiny and then have Aurelia grant a second combat where you attack a different opponent.</p>
<p>With just those two creatures and no bonuses to their power, that would be seven damage on the first swing which would be converted into life gained for you followed by another seven life on the second swing. That means that so long as you were already one life above your starting life total, you can take out half of your opponents in a turn.</p>

<p><span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Avacyn, Angel of Hope" href="#" target="_blank">Avacyn, Angel of Hope</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> paired with a board wipe such as <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Jokulhaups" href="#" target="_blank">Jokulhaups</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> destroys the existing board state while sparing your now indestructible permanents. <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Platinum Angel" href="#" target="_blank">Platinum Angel</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> decides that you are unable to lose the game, for a time. <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Atraxa, Praetors&#039; Voice" href="#" target="_blank">Atraxa, Praetors&#039; Voice</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> allows you to focus on Phyrexian Angels and poison counters, or even counter-based alternative win conditions such as <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Azor&#039;s Elocutors" href="#" target="_blank">Azor&#039;s Elocutors</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> and <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Simic Ascendancy" href="#" target="_blank">Simic Ascendancy</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>.</p>
