<p>This is such a fun card. It discourages the opponents who aren't enchanted with this from coming at you. You can send a single 1/1 token at your <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Archnemesis" href="#" target="_blank">Archnemesis</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> and it'll still net you sweet value, but I feel like you'll want to go hard at your <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Archnemesis" href="#" target="_blank">Archnemesis</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> with this attached. Make copies of this and see how it adds a wild layer to the game.</p>

<p>A scalable, damage-based targeted creature removal spell that leaves behind a beater. If you've got access to lots of mana, this could be an asymmetrical board wipe. If you've got <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Brash Taunter" href="#" target="_blank">Brash Taunter</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> or <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Stuffy Doll" href="#" target="_blank">Stuffy Doll</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> effects, you can spell disaster for your opponents. Pop a <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Torbran, Thane of Red Fell" href="#" target="_blank">Torbran, Thane of Red Fell</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> in Batroc's 99 or damage triplers like <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="City on Fire" href="#" target="_blank">City on Fire</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> and go bananas.</p>

<p>By just attacking, you get to free cast something from your graveyard in two turns. This can set you up nicely in "play from exile" decks like <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Prosper, Tome-Bound" href="#" target="_blank">Prosper, Tome-Bound</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>. Then there's all the <em>Doctor Who</em> time travel stuff like <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="The Tenth Doctor" href="#" target="_blank">The Tenth Doctor</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> and <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="The Ninth Doctor" href="#" target="_blank">The Ninth Doctor</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>! In the precon, all that conniving means that you'll get to cheat a few things you've discarded.</p>

<p>This is a fun piece to punish that noncreature player in your pod. It's also a great way to dissuade the player who wants to cast <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Blasphemous Act" href="#" target="_blank">Blasphemous Act</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> because your board is so big! <a href="https://edhrec.com/tags/enchantress">Enchantress decks</a>, <a href="https://edhrec.com/tags/spellslinger">Spellslinger decks</a>, <a href="https://edhrec.com/tags/artifacts">Artifact decks</a>, <a href="https://edhrec.com/tags/planeswalkers">Planeswalker decks</a> - they'll all want to get this off the board, but it'll hurt them until they do.</p>

<p>An absolute house in the deck with Doom at the helm, but limiting factors mean that this card only goes in Villain decks that connive. Leading a deck, more connive cards would need to be printed in black or colorless to make this super viable.</p>

<p>A flying <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Sun Titan" href="#" target="_blank">titan</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> that lets you suspend nonlands from the top of your deck. In the precon, with <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Loki, the Deceiver" href="#" target="_blank">Loki, the Deceiver</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> at the helm, <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Kang Prime" href="#" target="_blank">Kang Prime</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> is one of your top creatures. Making a token copy with haste lets you suspend two cards from your deck, forecasting a spicy upkeep in two turns. As a commander, pop a <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Paradox Haze" href="#" target="_blank">Paradox Haze</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> and <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Genji Glove" href="#" target="_blank">Genji Glove</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> in the 99 and drown the table in value!</p>

<p>In this deck, with Doom out, you're getting at least two 4/4 Villains putting the beatdown on your opponents. If you've got this in the command zone, you'll want to cram as many <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Thrill of Possibility" href="#" target="_blank">Thrill of Possibility</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> and <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Unexpected Windfall" href="#" target="_blank">Unexpected Windfall</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> effects to put on a Laser show.</p>

I want to ramp and I want to steal a great creature for a turn. Now I can do both for three mana. This works great with <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Loki, the Deceiver" href="#" target="_blank">Loki, the Deceiver</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> at the helm of the deck</p>

<p>I'm worried this one's going to be expensive. It can go into every deck! Getting to rip your next top deck and play it for free is very tempting, especially if you can draw cards on your opponents' turns, too. In the command zone, this feels like artifacts or Eldrazi and I'd love to see either one.</p>

<p>Goading creatures? Very villainous! Being able to attack someone and then knock a blocker out of the way so hard they end up attacking another player and make <em>you</em> a Treasure - well, that's dastardly! Dedicated goad decks can make up to three Treasures a turn cycle and I bet that definitely impacts how your opponents will block.</p>
<h3><span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Red Ghost, Intangible Genius" href="#" target="_blank">Red Ghost, Intangible Genius</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span></h3>

<p>Conniving with Doom in the command zone means that you'll be making Ape Villains easily. I'm certain you can find ways to draw two cards on your opponents' turns if you build around this in the command zone. Built-in protection and complete evasion makes this a heck of a potential Izzet Voltron commander.</p>
<h3><span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Typhoid Mary, Fractured" href="#" target="_blank">Typhoid Mary, Fractured</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span></h3>

Even if you can't discard and choose your mode, every one of Mary's attack triggers is gravy. Pop this in an <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Isshin, Two Heavens as One" href="#" target="_blank">Isshin, Two Heavens as One</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> deck! In the precon, Doom's conniving allows you to meet the requirement to choose between the three options.</p>

<p>This deck churns through cards with tons of conniving, allowing you to sculpt the perfect response to those who keep trying to thwart your evil plans!</p>

<p>The biggest bad of 'em all might not seem like much at first blush, but after goldfishing this deck, I'm sorry I ever doubted it. A passive connive on each of your combat phases really smooths out your draws and makes your Villains worthy of the red zone. Then, when you're full up on lands, you can send them to the bin and speed up the devastation of your opponents' life totals without even swinging. I wasn't initially impressed, but Doctor Vic is a fantastic leader for the deck, even if he isn't particularly flashy.</p>
<p>While <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Doctor Doom, King of Latveria" href="#" target="_blank">Doctor Doom, King of Latveria</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> is a more open typal commander, <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Loki, the Deceiver" href="#" target="_blank">Loki, the Deceiver</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> tells you that Villains are so nice, you should have 'em twice! Allowing you to draw three if you connect with each opponent's face is pretty great for those combat loving gamers who live for the aggro dream. It's an aggressive commander that might be more restrictive, but it'll keep lovers of the deck vigilant to "Villain" on type lines since I don't believe we'll have such overt typing within in-universe sets.</p>
<p>In this precon, it's extremely clear that the only thing that matters is leading a life of crime. Here are some excellent Villains that work great in the deck</p>

It's a cool direction to lean into, if you're into having a board of permanents that key off of a single trigger that is reliably available to you in your command zone.</p>

<p>The deck boasts three board wipes and depending on how you've set your Villains up, they can be flexible enough for you not to lose everything. This is easier done with <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Kindred Dominance" href="#" target="_blank">Kindred Dominance</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> and <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Toxic Deluge" href="#" target="_blank">Toxic Deluge</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> than with <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Blasphemous Act" href="#" target="_blank">Blasphemous Act</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, but it's still possible since connive allows you to put +1/+1 counters on your creatures.</p>

<p>While many of the cards drawn are from the precon's density of connive effects, this isn't technically card advantage. <em>Doom Prevails</em> lets you cast a few things from exile via suspend with <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Kang Prime" href="#" target="_blank">Kang Prime</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> and <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Doom&#039;s Time Platform" href="#" target="_blank">Doom&#039;s Time Platform</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, but as far as cards that increase the number of cards in your hand, there are diverse options in the deck. You can even put one of them in the command zone with <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Loki, the Deceiver" href="#" target="_blank">Loki, the Deceiver</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>.</p>

<h3>Five Cards to Remove</h3>
<p>This deck list flows nicely out of the box. I've been having a blast testing it online. Cutting away Villains feels wrong, but some of these Villains are on their own side-mission and passing through.</p>

<p>There aren't enough instants and sorceries in the deck that make this worth keeping in the list. In fact, in my own version of the deck, I'd chop a few more of those spells in favor of creature-based removal, but shockingly, there are very few Villains that actually are removal pieces. Zemo isn't bad if you've got enough stuff in the graveyard, but the density out of the box isn't there.</p>

Hand disruption is great, but if it's a one-off, I'm less interested.</p>

<p>I don't want to hear it. I know this card looks cool and chaotic, but as a Villain with a Master Plan<strong class="Yjhzub" data-sfc-root="c" data-sfc-cb="" data-copy-service-computed-style="font-family: &quot;Google Sans&quot;, &quot;Helvetica Neue&quot;, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0px; text-decoration: none; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-bottom-style: none; border-bottom-color: rgb(0, 29, 53);">™</strong>, I don't want anything throwing a wrench in what I'm up to! Sure, if you play a <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Baron Strucker, HYDRA Overlord" href="#" target="_blank">Baron Strucker, HYDRA Overlord</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> and end up with <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Kindred Dominance" href="#" target="_blank">Kindred Dominance</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, you'll feel like you won out, but what if you really need to play a board wipe and end up with the reverse outcome? Paying seven mana for a Baron and four damage to each opponent when you really need to be in control of your move is really a frustrating place to be.</p>

While this is really great in <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Loki, the Deceiver" href="#" target="_blank">Loki, the Deceiver</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, since I'm making cuts with <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Doctor Doom, King of Latveria" href="#" target="_blank">Doctor Doom, King of Latveria</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> at the helm, this is one I felt okay about.</p>

<p>Every time I drew this, I felt like I had better things to do. With <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Endless Ranks of HYDRA" href="#" target="_blank">Endless Ranks of HYDRA</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Ultron, Unlimited" href="#" target="_blank">Ultron, Unlimited</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, or <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Red Ghost, Intangible Genius" href="#" target="_blank">Red Ghost, Intangible Genius</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> in the mix, <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Madame Hydra" href="#" target="_blank">Madame Hydra</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> just didn't feel worth the squeeze in my testing.</p>

<p>With some space in your deck, here are some options I thought of for those budget-minded and those ballin' out of control. With a massive number of Villains being only from the <em>Marvel Super Heroes </em>sets and <em>Marvel's Spider-Man </em>sets, you've got access to a decent rogues' gallery. At the time of writing, however, the Villains from the latest set haven't fully been priced, so I recommend taking time and searching <a href="http://scryfall.com">Scryfall</a> for more Grixis Villains I couldn't price into this section.</p>
<h3>Five Additions on a Budget</h3>

Being able to toss stuff into the graveyard means that this is a great spot for <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Anger" href="#" target="_blank">Anger</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Wonder" href="#" target="_blank">Wonder</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, and <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Filth" href="#" target="_blank">Filth</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>.</p>
<h3>Five Additions With No Budget</h3>

<p>There's a lot of conniving in this deck and that means you'll be well served to have ways to take advantage of your graveyard and all that discarding. <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Crucible of Worlds" href="#" target="_blank">Crucible of Worlds</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> feels like the right fit for Doom considering his bonus for discarding lands. Now, you get to play them from your graveyard and it's like you didn't lose a card at all! Because you're discarding, lean into it with cards like <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Bone Miser" href="#" target="_blank">Bone Miser</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> and <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Monument to Endurance" href="#" target="_blank">Monument to Endurance</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>. <p>Nothing will make you feel like more of a villain than when you have to ask "Do you pay the one?" to each spell your opponents cast. <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Notion Thief" href="#" target="_blank">Notion Thief</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> may not have Villain in its type line, but it definitely has it in spirit. Being on the receiving end of a <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Cyclonic Rift" href="#" target="_blank">Cyclonic Rift</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> is devastating, so to be the perfect Villain, it's up to you to make your nemeses feel this way, too. Muahahaha.</p>

<p>I've been enjoying this deck a ton. You can turbo charge the Villain plan or ditch the typal stuff altogether and you'll still have great base to build from. With some really pricey reprints in the mix and a deck that can cook at two speeds, I'd say this is a solid B+ precon for me. In the times I've gotten to test it online, I've seen a lot of cards and made a lot of cool stuff happen, so it's been a proper itch-scratching. <p>I'm not expecting anyone right now. I wonder who it could be. *Opens the Door, and staggers back a little* Wait, <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Doctor Doom" href="#" target="_blank">Doctor Doom</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>?</p>
<p>Doom: Yes, it is I.</p>
<p>Me: *stammers a bit, but corrects myself* I must ask: Are you <em>the</em> Doom, or are you a Doombot?</p>

<p>Doom: I've heard of a game Reed now plays, called <em>Magic: The Gathering</em>. It so happens that both of us got a card, and I need a deck to defeat him. I've heard about <a href="https://edhrec.com/articles/j-jonah-jameson-commander-deck-tech" target="_blank" rel="noopener">the time</a> when you appeared on <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="J. Jonah Jameson" href="#" target="_blank">J. Jonah Jameson</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>'s broadcast. He was a fool for shouting you off as he did. I can see the potential in you.</p>
<p>Me: I can assist you, but may I ask if you're new to the game? I'd like to go over your game plan, if you'll indulge me.</p>
<p>Doom: As you were.</p>
<p>Me: Right.</p>
<h3>The Plot Thickens</h3>

<p>Me: To begin, <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Doctor Doom" href="#" target="_blank">your card</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> costs six mana, so we need to ramp pretty hard when you get there. At that point, we're going to need you to stick around. Fortunately, your card has indestructible built into it. We just need to control an artifact creature or a Plan. There's plenty of ways to do that. Even your card comes with a pair of 3/3 Doombots.</p>
<p>But, we can always use more. For starters, <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Death in Heaven" href="#" target="_blank">Death in Heaven</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> will keep graveyard-centric decks honest, and makes artifact creatures on top of that. In addition, <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Genesis of the Daleks" href="#" target="_blank">Genesis of the Daleks</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> will keep dropping artifact creatures, and the number will grow for each lore counter on the card.</p>
<p>In the end, we force an opponent into a choice: Destroy the Daleks and lose a load of life, or wipe the board of non-Daleks. However, it's likely that the wipe will happen because opponents will see this coming and try to reduce the number of Daleks. There's a few more in there, but don't count on them being out at the same time as the Saga.</p>
<p>Doom: I noticed you have a card of me tooting Namor's horn.</p>
<p>Me: That was for a little fun. It gave me and everyone else a good laugh. That said, the real card I should be covering in its place is the one Plan card that's been revealed so far: <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Doom Reigns Supreme" href="#" target="_blank">Doom Reigns Supreme</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>. Your card is the only one with the Villain type in this list, so the build-up will be slow, but at least it'll be indestructible while it's out. I won't keep you for too long, so let me show you the first list. And, if this isn't to your liking, I have something up my sleeve as well.</p>

<h3>All Laid Bare</h3>

<p>Me: This list is my traditional <em>Universes Beyond</em> only list. People find the whole thing polarizing, but you wouldn't have come to me if it didn't exist. Certainly, this list's game plan is to amass an army of artifact creatures. It's your typical Bracket 2 fanfare, and simple to understand.</p>
<p>Firstly, both <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Cybermen Squadron" href="#" target="_blank">Cybermen Squadron</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> and <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Cyberman Patrol" href="#" target="_blank">Cyberman Patrol</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> do two different things, but achieving the same goal. On the one hand, Squadron gives every nonlegendary artifact creature the myriad ability, so you can attack other opponents as well. This is useful when you have an "enters the battlefield" ability (or ETB for short) that you want to double or triple up on. On the other, Patrol makes blocking difficult, especially if life totals are low.</p>
<p>In a similar vein, <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Skorpekh Lord" href="#" target="_blank">Skorpekh Lord</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> gives your artifact creatures a small boost and, more importantly, menace. This'll make blocking your artifact army much more difficult. That said, I have to say the best card in the deck is <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Biotransference" href="#" target="_blank">Biotransference</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>. While the first ability doesn't do much here, it makes your card an artifact creature, thus making it indestructible.</p>
<p>Not only that, each artifact you cast creates an artifact creature token.</p>

<h3>The Master Plan</h3>

<p>Me: This deck I dubbed "The Reedslayer." I pulled out every stop I could to ensure this deck is worthy to your eyes. Normally, I'd explain what in-universe cards would work in your deck. However, as you need to put a stop to Reed's plans, I present this list instead.</p>
<p>To start, I looked over Reed's card, and he draws a card if he casts a noncreature spell before combat. Thus, I included <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Sheoldred, the Apocalypse" href="#" target="_blank">Sheoldred, the Apocalypse</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> as a foil to that ability. We're in black, and that has plenty of way to remove creatures, including Reed himself, so he won't copy anything.</p>
<p>Included in the deck are what are called "scam" cards. The intent is to cast this on your card, shielding it from removal and putting it back on the battlefield. In doing this, more Doombots are created. Otherwise, there's ways to make an absurd amount of mana, and finishers to exploit said mana.</p>
<p>There's also an infinite combo in the list: <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Aetherflux Reservoir" href="#" target="_blank">Aetherflux Reservoir</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Bolas&#039;s Citadel" href="#" target="_blank">Bolas&#039;s Citadel</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, and <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Sensei&#039;s Divining Top" href="#" target="_blank">Sensei&#039;s Divining Top</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>.</p>
<p>Here's how it works: You have all three out. You tap the Top to put it back on top of the deck, drawing a card. However, with the Citadel out, the Top can be cast again for one life, and you get that life back (and more!) with Reservoir. This way, you go through the deck, and gain so much life it'll completely annihilate Richards with the Reservoir's activated ability.</p>
<h3>Further Upgrades</h3>
<p>Doom: This is beautiful. So evil, yet an excellent way to foil his plans. I will make use of this deck, and report back to you after Richards and his so-called Fantastic Four have been stopped.</p>
<p>Me: *gives Doom the deck* One more thing. If you want to push this deck into Bracket 4, it's quite simple to do. There are other <a href="https://edhrec.com/top/game-changers" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Game Changers</a> that tutor, like <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Vampiric Tutor" href="#" target="_blank">Vampiric Tutor</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, to get that combo faster. Cheap and fast mana rocks as well as <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Deadly Rollick" href="#" target="_blank">Deadly Rollick</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> (not a Game Changer) and <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Yawgmoth&#039;s Will" href="#" target="_blank">Yawgmoth&#039;s Will</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> will go a long way.</p>
<h3>One Week Later</h3>
<p>And that's a wrap for this article. I went above and beyond to present a deck that's worthy of Victor von Doom. I sure hope he's succeeded. In any case, join me next time when we return to <em>ATLA </em>when I go over the last character I'll cover from that set.</p>
