<p>With the new <em>Hobbit</em> set coming soon, we're naturally getting a reprint of <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Tom Bombadil" href="#" target="_blank">Tom Bombadil</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> and plenty of new Sagas, but it would be nice to get an even cooler new Saga commander in this set. We've already got <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Fíli and Kíli, Joyous" href="#" target="_blank">Fíli and Kíli, Joyous</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, but its mana dork ability, eh, leaves much to be desired.</p>
<p>To manifest an awesome new Saga commander, let's check out all the ones we already have, and see if we can't find something worth building around in the meantime. Here's hoping!</p>

<p>At first I was confused by Barbara, because there's no Doctor that cares about Sagas. But a quick glance at her EDHREC page reveals that there are a number of Doctors focused on historic cards, which includes Sagas.</p>
<p>I like this design a lot, where the Doctor's broad theme is narrowed by the deck builder's choice of companion. That being said, Barbara's not all that crazy. Giving each Saga read ahead is interesting, and maybe even decent, but in my opinion, it defeats the purpose of Sagas. If we're going to skip to the third chapter, they might as well just be instants and sorceries!</p>
<p>Overall, we're getting less value out of them, and less time with them, too. That means other Saga-centric cards like <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Chong and Lily, Nomads" href="#" target="_blank">Chong and Lily, Nomads</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> will be weaker. I'm sure we could make a great deck with Barbara if we built around her, but if I wanted to enjoy Sagas as much as possible, she wouldn't be my pick.</p>
<p><strong>Tier: B</strong></p>

<p>At first, I thought these guys were just a throwaway legendary for Bard typal, a theme no one plays, but they're actually quite strong.</p>
<p>Putting a lore counter on any number of Sagas we control is potent acceleration, and then giving the team a huge buff a turn later is even better. Their biggest weakness is that it's a 3/3 that wants to attack, but guess which other Saga commander is a Bard who gives himself indestructible. Yup, <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Tom Bombadil" href="#" target="_blank">Tom Bombadil</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>. Chong and Lily are a must-play in that deck.</p>
<p>Unfortunately, the mono-red color identity restricts the card's own deck pretty hard, but I still have to give these guys credit as amazing support.</p>
<p><strong>Tier: B</strong></p>

<p>Six mana? Yes, Eivor cheats Sagas onto the battlefield for free, but six mana is a huge investment to make, and frankly, I'd rather just cast a six-mana Saga from hand.</p>
<p>I do like the idea of a Saga-<a href="https://edhrec.com/tags/voltron">Voltron</a> deck built around Eivor, but then I'd want a lot of expensive Sagas that synergize with the Voltron theme, plus evasion, plus some top-deck manipulation, and that already sounds like a cramped and restrictive deck. I think I'd have to see this deck in action to really judge it, but for now, I'm pretty down on Eivor.</p>
<p><strong>Tier: C</strong></p>

<p>Well, there's not a lot to say here. Fíli and Kíli is an alright mana dork for Dwarves, Equipment, and Sagas, but since Dwarves and Equipment go better together than Sagas do with either of them, I imagine that's the direction most deck builders will go.</p>
<p>That is, if any deck builders pick them up. This card is not a great commander at all, and I doubt a three-mana dork that taps for two is gonna fit in the 99 of any deck.</p>
<p><strong>Tier: D</strong></p>

<p>I think this commander is subtle, but really, really good.</p>
<p>All she does is take counters off of Sagas and grow herself slowly, but if we keep playing Sagas that never disappear while building our commander, the value is gonna get exponential. Every turn we can play more Sagas, grow Garnet larger, and keep getting all the triggers from our other Sagas.</p>
<p>Just imagine how good it gets if we can double the trigger with <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Strionic Resonator" href="#" target="_blank">Strionic Resonator</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, and proliferate the lore counters. This commander will roll slowly, but she definitely snowballs.</p>
<p><strong>Tier: A</strong></p>
<h2><span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Guru Pathik" href="#" target="_blank">Guru Pathik</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span></h2>

<p>What the heck is this? Lessons, Sagas, and Shrines have absolutely nothing to do with each other.</p>
<p>Lessons are just instants and sorceries with an extra type, Sagas can be anything, and Shrines only care about other Shrines. The only thing these types have in common is that they were all printed in <em>Avatar: The Last Airbender</em>.</p>
<p>Maybe the most hilarious part is that the payoff is also unrelated. We can't put +1/+1 counters on Lessons, Sagas, or Shrines! I don't know who thought of this card, but I'm coming to the conclusion that it must be some kind of joke.</p>
<p><strong>Tier: F</strong></p>

<p><span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Ian Chesterton" href="#" target="_blank">Ian Chesterton</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> is exactly what I wanted to see in a Saga commander, because unlike Barbara Wright, he lets us play more Sagas, rather than fewer. Giving every Saga replicate is really strong, and they're gonna multiply even more if we're running <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="The Sixth Doctor" href="#" target="_blank">The Sixth Doctor</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>.</p>
<p>The more the merrier with this one, and there will definitely be more.</p>
<p><strong>Tier: A</strong></p>

<p>Narci is a neat commander, incentivizing us to churn through Sagas and recur them as fast as possible. The more we do, the more cards we draw, and the more life our opponents lose.</p>
<p>I'm having a hard time judging just how good that is though. If I play a seven-drop and three turns later I draw a card, gain seven life, and my opponents lose seven, is that worth it? It's not bad for sure, but I don't think it beats out some of the other commanders on this list.</p>
<p>Narci is unfortunately a bit slow and underwhelming, but I do like the concept.</p>
<p><strong>Tier: B</strong></p>

<p>Rydia's another interesting take on Sagas, essentially giving them flashback. Or is unearth a better comparison?</p>
<p>She actually gives them haste, which would've been completely irrelevant before <em>Final Fantasy</em>, but now there are a ton of creature Sagas. I think the haste is a bit of a red herring though, because Rydia is probably better off playing other Sagas that trigger landfall.</p>
<p>That first ability, discarding and drawing whenever we play a land, is really strong. It's solid card selection, and it gives us an opportunity to pitch Sagas and reanimate them later. Those two abilities in tandem make Rydia an absolute value train, but that's not all she can do. Because it's a Saga deck, we're gonna be playing <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Power Conduit" href="#" target="_blank">Power Conduit</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, which can not only remove lore counters, but finality counters as well. Now we've got a graveyard engine, and maybe even a few infinite combos.</p>
<p>Rydia is definitely my favorite Saga commander so far, and she'd be an S tier if it wasn't for her rather limited color identity. Still, there are more than 70 Sagas in red and green, so it's not a real problem.</p>
<p><strong>Tier: A</strong></p>

<p>Satsuki was pretty much the first ever Saga commander. Before this, the only real way to play Sagas was with <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Atraxa, Praetors&#039; Voice" href="#" target="_blank">Atraxa, Praetors&#039; Voice</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, who, come to think of it, was pretty decent.</p>
<p>But as the first dedicated Saga commander, Satsuki was a lot of fun. Accelerating the lore counters was great, and bouncing or reanimating the Sagas was also pretty good. But I think everyone just appreciated having a commander for the theme. Now, Satsuki is still decent, but there are far better options, with stronger abilities and more colors.</p>
<p>But don't worry Satsuki, I still love you.</p>
<p><strong>Tier: B</strong></p>

<p>Here's another really unique, really strong take on Sagas.</p>
<p>Sigurd cares all about attacking with that boast ability, and he supports himself quite well with those +1/+1 counters and keywords. If we've got three or four Sagas on the board he'll be growing pretty quickly, and then the boasts will accelerate us even faster.</p>
<p>This card is pretty similar to <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Garnet, Princess of Alexandria" href="#" target="_blank">Garnet, Princess of Alexandria</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> with that game plan, and I imagine they complement each other really well.</p>
<p><strong>Tier: A</strong></p>
<h2><span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Terra, Magical Adept" href="#" target="_blank">Terra, Magical Adept</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span></h2>

<p>And we've got yet another awesome card design. This is the only commander on the list who is actually a Saga, and it's quite a strong one.</p>
<p>Once we transform Terra, we get Saga clones for three turns in a row, then ten mana. Wow! Of course, we have to invest nine mana into that, and Esper Terra is incredibly vulnerable, given that it's a creature and an enchantment.</p>
<p>But the payoff is pretty darn worth it. That much value is crazy, and I really think the ability to clone other Sagas is a lot of fun, especially if we're making nonlegendary clones of Esper Terra. My sensible side is forcing me to say that Terra is too expensive, but I can't do anything except adore this commander.</p>
<p><strong>Tier: A</strong></p>

<p>Finally, the card we've all been waiting for, the quintessential Saga commander, <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Tom Bombadil" href="#" target="_blank">Tom Bombadil</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>.</p>
<p>I think it's pretty clear that Bombadil was designed to be the perfect Saga commander, and he absolutely achieves that. The card is pretty simple, really. When we're done with one Saga, we get another. It's an infinite stream of value, combined with some protection as well as five colors to give us every option.</p>
<p>It doesn't get much better than that, and if you want an easy commander to play all the Sagas you love, be glad that Tom Bombadil is right here.</p>

<h2>Conclusion</h2>
<p>I have to say, this is one of my favorite tier list articles I've ever done. Somehow, I've never noticed that almost all the Saga commanders are awesome.</p>
<p>Usually if we're building around a card type the deck is just that, but here we could have Saga Voltron, Saga Reanimator, or even Saga Clones. How awesome is that? I genuinely want to build Garnet and Rydia right now, and they aren't even the best options on the list. I guess the design team has just been cooking like crazy when it comes to Saga commanders.</p>
<p>I do have a question for y'all though. What commanders don't explicitly mention Sagas, but would be great for them, like <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Atraxa, Praetors&#039; Voice" href="#" target="_blank">Atraxa, Praetors&#039; Voice</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>? I know there's gotta be more, and I want to check them out too.</p>

<h2>Oh the Humanity!</h2>
<p>A month ago<a href="https://edhrec.com/articles/ranking-every-merfolk-commander-on-a-tier-list"> I ranked every Merfolk commander on a tier list</a> and now I'm back to rank Humans. It's gonna be the same rules as Merfolk, only commanders who explicitly mention the Human creature type or uniquely support them.</p>
<p>I had to debate a lot with myself over whether to include the second category at all, however. Humans don't have much in the way of unique themes, except for making tokens, which Elves and plenty of other types do just as much.</p>
<p>But the second most popular Human typal commander, <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Caesar, Legion&#039;s Emperor" href="#" target="_blank">Caesar, Legion&#039;s Emperor</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, doesn't mention Humans at all, and he'd get excluded by that criteria. Personally I don't think he's really a Human commander, but 1,246 decks disagree with me.</p>
<p>I guess I have to accept that soldier tokens really are a uniquely Human theme. Actually, given the amount of wars that we wage, I can see how that's the case.</p>
<h2>Caesar, Legion's Emperor</h2>

<p>Like I mentioned in the intro, I don't think Caesar is much of a Human typal commander. He counts any tokens, and the ones he makes are just soldiers, not Humans.</p>
<p>So why does he even show up on the Human typal page? Well, it's just because the majority of support for tokens, especially soldier tokens, is from Human creatures.</p>
<p>There's <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Adeline, Resplendent Cathar" href="#" target="_blank">Adeline, Resplendent Cathar</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Commissar Severina Raine" href="#" target="_blank">Commissar Severina Raine</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Kambal, Profiteering Mayor" href="#" target="_blank">Kambal, Profiteering Mayor</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> and <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Myrel, Shield of Argive" href="#" target="_blank">Myrel, Shield of Argive</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>. All incredible token support (not to mention sacrifice support) that just happens to be on Humans.</p>
<p>I don't think Caesar supports Humans, I think that Humans support Caesar, and while that doesn't make Caesar a Humans commander, it does mean he deserves to be on this list.</p>

<p>I definitely think the density of Humans is enough to justify running Human typal cards like <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Horn of Gondor" href="#" target="_blank">Horn of Gondor</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, especially if you make sure to focus on Human tokens with cards like <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Increasing Devotion" href="#" target="_blank">Increasing Devotion</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>.</p>
<p>Caesar's deck might be a little diluted if you go the Human route, but it'll still be plenty powerful, and that makes him a great commander.</p>

<h2>Éowyn, Shieldmaiden</h2>

<p>Now here's a commander that actually cares about Humans. Éowyn makes it as simple as it can be. If you get more of them on the battlefield, you get more rewards.</p>
<p>She makes it pretty easy too, getting you to the threshold if you can play a second Human the turn after you play her. In a Human typal deck, that should be no problem.</p>
<p>She's strong for sure, offering card advantage and a board presence, but I'm curious, what do you do other than play Humans? I mean, I guess that's the point, just play creatures until you win, but doesn't that get boring?</p>
<p>Like, is there any variation in the games? I guess Humans themselves have a lot of variety, but all they're really there for is to attack. I can't deny that this deck is strong, but I can't see myself wanting to play it for more than a few rounds.</p>
<p>Tier: A</p>
<h2>General Kudro of Drannith</h2>

<p>General Kudro is one of those commanders that's obviously meant to be secondary to another in the set, like <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Kopala, Warden of Waves" href="#" target="_blank">Kopala, Warden of Waves</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> was to <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Kumena, Tyrant of Orazca" href="#" target="_blank">Kumena, Tyrant of Orazca</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>. Given this, he's pretty underwhelming.</p>
<p>Sacrificing two Humans to destroy a creature is just a net negative, and while exiling cards from graveyards is always relevant, it's not much to build around. I do appreciate Kudro in the 99 of other Human decks, but as a commander he's no good.</p>
<p>Tier: C</p>
<h2>Greymond, Avacyn's Stalwart</h2>

<p>Here's a card that really annoys me, but not because of its text. Because of the limited supply for Secret Lair Drops, Greymond is perpetually priced at SIXTY dollars.</p>
<p>And he's not even that good! He's basically just an anthem, but one that's more vulnerable to removal than an enchantment.</p>
<p>I think 99% of the time I'd rather play <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Intangible Virtue" href="#" target="_blank">Intangible Virtue</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> or <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="True Conviction" href="#" target="_blank">True Conviction</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, not because they're strictly better, but because they don't empty out my wallet. And as a commander, we just have better options. Decent card, absurd cost.</p>

<h2>Jirina Kudro</h2>

<p>When <em>Commander 2020</em> came out I remember being surprised that a single person was playing this card. For four mana, she's a terrible anthem and she incentivizes you to sacrifice her anyways. But at no point are the tokens she creates worth the price of replaying her!</p>
<p>It's basically two mana for each token, a horrendous rate when compared to <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Martial Coup" href="#" target="_blank">Martial Coup</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> or <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Secure the Wastes" href="#" target="_blank">Secure the Wastes</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>. Sure, you can treat her like a repeatable X spell, but you'll quickly run out of mana, and that mana would be better spent elsewhere.</p>
<p>Ironically, she's better in the 99 of <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Silvar, Devourer of the Free" href="#" target="_blank">Silvar, Devourer of the Free</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> and <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Trynn, Champion of Freedom" href="#" target="_blank">Trynn, Champion of Freedom</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, the secondary commanders of her precon, because they both add to Jirina's count. Somehow, she's worse than her dad.</p>

<h2>Katilda, Dawnhart Prime</h2>

<p>Now we're actually going in an interesting direction. Giving creatures the ability to tap for mana is usually an Elf thing, but it works pretty well for Humans.</p>
<p>They love to make tokens, and they love to spend a lot of mana. This deck welcomes big X spells, over the top anthems and powerful Angels, and even if you can't find those Katilda has a handy dandy mana sink. I think this is a pretty great design for a Human commander.</p>
<p>Katilda is nothing too wild, but she seems like a lot of fun.</p>

<h2>Katilda and Lier</h2>

<p>Ok now we're talking. I've built <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Katilda and Lier" href="#" target="_blank">Katilda and Lier</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> before, and they are so much fun to play. Are they good? Not really. You need a 50/50 split between Humans and non-permanents, so the deck is quite unfocused and struggles to be consistent. But it's a great challenge to build, and it's a blast to see what happens in game.</p>
<p>Ideally you cast a bunch of spells and then Humans, and get a bunch of value out of <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Katilda and Lier" href="#" target="_blank">Katilda and Lier</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>. I won't lie, that doesn't happen often, but when it does, it feels amazing.</p>
<p>I like these guys a lot, and I'd love to tackle them again to see if I can make them better. For now though, their power level is gonna leave them at B Tier.</p>

<h2>Kyler, Sigardian Emissary</h2>

<p>It's really surprising to me that Kyler is as popular as he is. Yes, he can grow extremely fast, and he makes your entire team huge, which is amazing for Humans, but he's a five mana commander who dies extremely easily to removal.</p>
<p>Because Kyler relies on counters, it's so, so easy for your opponents to undo all the work you've been doing, especially in the middle of combat. Playing this commander seems like such an uphill battle.</p>
<p>He does get to benefit from all the +1/+1 counter synergies, however, so it can't be too hard to make him massive.</p>
<p>But then you have to balance your deck between Humans and +1/+1 counters, and there's not a ton of overlap. I can definitely see scenarios where this deck goes crazy, but it just seems too easy to cripple when your commander costs seven on second cast.</p>
<p>Tier: B</p>
<h2>Silvar, Devourer of the Free // Trynn, Champion of Freedom</h2>

<p>For whatever reason I was really excited about this pair. I thought they were like, the perfect Human commanders, but I just read their textboxes and wow, they're really underwhelming.</p>
<p>They do basically nothing? Trynn makes one token a turn, <em>if </em>you can attack, and Silvar gets big, at the cost of said Humans. Neither of them really support the creature type, and Silvar actually incentivizes you to have fewer of them.</p>
<p>This duo seems to demand a go wide strategy just to make Silvar big, and if you do all that he's just an alright Voltron commander. It's a cool design lore wise, though!</p>
<p>Tier: C</p>
<h2>Théoden, King of Rohan</h2>

<p>I don't have a whole lot to say about Théoden. He's clearly not meant to be a commander, but he is decent in the 99. Pretty much any deck loves double strike, and Théoden is generous with it.</p>
<p>He's well-costed too! Definitely consider this card in any Human deck that wants to hit hard.</p>
<p>Tier: B</p>
<h2>Winota, Joiner of Forces</h2>

<p>Oh man, I was worried we were gonna go this entire article without a single S Tier, but luckily Winota meets my criteria.</p>
<p>She does it quite curiously, however, demanding that you play non-Humans to cheat Humans onto the battlefield. It's a great deck building challenge, but it doesn't lead to an unfocused deck like <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Katilda and Lier" href="#" target="_blank">Katilda and Lier</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>. In fact, Winota's biggest downside might be that she's too powerful.</p>
<p>I would not have expected her to lead cEDH decks, but somehow she does, and she can be an absolute powerhouse in any game.</p>
<p>Yet it's still fun! There's deckbuilding strategy, a unique gameplay experience, and just a bit of luck. In my opinion, Winota is one of the best commanders of this decade.</p>
<p>Tier: S</p>
