The 10 Best Legendary Artifacts in Commander

Mox OpalMox Opal | Art by Volkan Baga

Artifacts are one of the most played and most powerful card types in Magic. Regardless of the format, artifacts will often rise to the top. Cards like Mox SapphireMox Sapphire, Arcbound RavagerArcbound Ravager, and even Arcum's AstrolabeArcum's Astrolabe have been winning games in all eras and formats of the game. Some artifacts stand above the rest, reaching legendary heights and status.

Just because a card is legendary doesn't mean it's better than another card; and sometimes it doesn't even mean a card is good. Today, though, we're looking at my list for the ten best legendary artifacts in the Commander format.

Why am I putting these ten above all the rest? You'll have to read below to find out. In no particular order, let's get into the list.

The One RingThe One Ring

The One Ring

Starting the list off with a bang and one of the two Game Changers, we have The One RingThe One Ring. If all this card did was come down and give you protection from everything for a single turn, it might still be too good at . Instead, it comes with a repeatable draw ability that's easy to abuse for many artifact-based combo decks.

Notable boogeymen of the format, such as Urza, Lord High ArtificerUrza, Lord High Artificer, Magda, Brazen OutlawMagda, Brazen Outlaw, and fittingly, Sauron, the Dark LordSauron, the Dark Lord love to have this card at their disposal.

While getting protection requires casting the card, it's often worth resetting the burden counters by blinking it repeatedly.

The Great HengeThe Great Henge

The Great Henge

The Great HengeThe Great Henge is one of the most disgusting cards for a creature-heavy deck. Cards doing too much is nothing new in the year 2026, but did they need to let this card add mana, draw cards, and gain life? A must-answer threat - the same as most things on this list - The Great Henge is a card that can let green creature decks flip an okay turn into a game-winning turn in the blink of an eye.

Bolas's CitadelBolas's Citadel

Bolas's Citadel

A true 1A 1B situation when it comes to which card is more combotastic: The One Ring or Bolas's CitadelBolas's Citadel. Citadel can lead to some of the craziest turns seen in a game of Magic and is sitting with The One Ring on the Game Changer list for good reason. Cards that allow you to cheat on mana costs, in this case by paying life, immediately become dangerous.

The sacrifice effect on Bolas's Citadel will often act as a win condition paired with cards like Blood ArtistBlood Artist and Mayhem DevilMayhem Devil.

Akroma's MemorialAkroma's Memorial

Akroma's Memorial

A win condition that has stood the test of time, Akroma's MemorialAkroma's Memorial stays winning games no matter the year. While not the cheapest way to pump up creatures at , what you give your creatures is well worth the cost. Giving everything a cocktail of combat keywords and protection from two colors makes it so that your creatures are going to get into the red zone.

Memorial runs the gamut of decks that utilize it. Bello, Bard of the BramblesBello, Bard of the Brambles loves to turn it into a creature, while Jodah, the UnifierJodah, the Unifier loves to cheat it out of the deck or use it to bring along another legendary friend.

Being another colorless card means that everything from Karn, Legacy ReforgedKarn, Legacy Reforged to Graaz, Unstoppable JuggernautGraaz, Unstoppable Juggernaut want to get their hands on it.

Alhammarret's ArchiveAlhammarret's Archive

Alhammarret's Archive

Do you like to draw cards? How about gaining life? What if you got to double up on those effects all the time? Then you would be interested in Alhammarret's ArchiveAlhammarret's Archive. It's perfect for two different strategies and a simple but wanted effect for those strategies.

A new design philosophy seems to be "Do an effect then do it again," and the Archive is no stranger to that - just an older one.

Helm of the HostHelm of the Host

Helm of the Host

The only Equipment on the list, and, as strange as it sounds, one that's not often seen in Equipment decks. Helm of the HostHelm of the Host is one of the best ways to double up on your commander or any other legendary creature you want.

It can lead to infinite combos when played in a Godo, Bandit WarlordGodo, Bandit Warlord list, but looking at some of its top commanders, making copies of Roxanne, Starfall SavantRoxanne, Starfall Savant or Deadpool, Trading CardDeadpool, Trading Card sounds good to me.

The OzolithThe Ozolith

The Ozolith

A card that can lead to brain-numbing levels of math, The OzolithThe Ozolith also brings along rules and interactions that make you stop and say, "It works like that?" A staple in counter decks of any kind, be it +1/+1 counters or keyword counters seen in Ikoria, and should possibly see play in decks wanting to blight their own creatures.

The best bonus of The Ozolith is getting to double up on moving counters when dealing with cards like Arcbound RavagerArcbound Ravager or Zabaz, the GlimmerwaspZabaz, the Glimmerwasp.

Mox OpalMox Opal

Mox Opal

For a while, I debated if this should be one of the other legal legendary Moxen, but sometimes you just can't beat a classic. So while Mox AmberMox Amber doesn't quite make the list, Mox OpalMox Opal gets a rightful place. Seen in every format possible, even finding itself on a ban list now and then, Mox Opal might need a few friends to get it going. But once it does, there is no stopping it.

How can a simple mana rock compete with the likes of other cards on this list, you ask? The combination of playing well inside artifact strategies, costing , and tapping for any color needed does wonders for a simple little card. It doesn't hurt that this card has a plethora of great art, too.

Planetarium of Wan Shi TongPlanetarium of Wan Shi Tong

Planetarium of Wan Shi Tong

What is it with all these big, colorless artifacts and wanting to be part of a combo? While I might not have an answer, I do have another for the list: Planetarium of Wan Shi TongPlanetarium of Wan Shi Tong. Casting things for free, as I mentioned, is always a strong effect, no matter how you get to do it. The Planetarium grants you a free cast whenever you scry or surveil a card. Cast something as harmless as an OptOpt, then cast another card for free. How about playing one of the Surveil Lands and playing what you left on top for free?

The home of the big smart Bird from Avatar should not be underestimated, as Wan Shi Tong, LibrarianWan Shi Tong, Librarian is the knower of 10,000 things.

Krark's ThumbKrark's Thumb

Krark's Thumb

Last up on the list is a controversial pick, to say the least. It's by far the weakest card on here when you compare everything to each other. But Krark's ThumbKrark's Thumb might be the most important to the strategy it sees play in. The only one of Krark's thumbs that is legal - sorry Krark's Other ThumbKrark's Other Thumb - it's often the card most sought after when playing a coin flip deck.

Every Coin Flip deck should be playing the thumb, and that goes all the way to cEDH builds like Krark, the ThumblessKrark, the Thumbless paired with Sakashima of a Thousand FacesSakashima of a Thousand Faces.

Wrap Up

This concludes the 10 best legendary artifacts in Commander list. Which one was your favorite? I'm partial to Krark's Thumb myself, but I have gotten great joy from casting Bolas's Citadel and The One Ring in a variety of formats.

What card do you think should have made the list? Let me know here, or anywhere you can find me on the internet @nicxnax96. What deck do you run that's looking for a legendary artifact of its own? Let me know.
