The Best Aura Combos in Commander - Part One

One with the KamiOne with the Kami | Art by Justyna Dura

Welcome back to Wombo Combo, your regular hub for Commander-legal combo cards, ranked by EDHREC and Commander Spellbook. This week, we start our look at the most prolific subclass of enchantments: Auras.

Curiosity
Curse of Opulence
Bear Umbra

Auras attach themselves to something, somewhat like Equipment. While Auras typically attach to creatures, there are Auras for all permanent types, players, and even cards not on the battlefield (an example being Spellweaver VoluteSpellweaver Volute). Auras are very prevalent in Magic, and so we'll be taking a look at them in two installments to truly get a full picture of what they offer us.

Let's begin the first installment!

#20: Curse of the Restless Dead

Curse of the Restless Dead

Number of Combos: 62

Deck Inclusions: 27,457 decks (0.66%)

Curse of the Restless DeadCurse of the Restless Dead joins a group of landfall-style cards which makes a creature token when a land enters. What sets Curse of the Restless Dead apart is that you get to choose what player it attaches to, meaning you could attach it to a Landfall playing opponent for large amounts of tokens.

To perform combos though, attach it to yourself and use the tokens to trigger Kodama of the East TreeKodama of the East Tree. You can sacrifice the tokens to Perilous ForaysPerilous Forays, fetching lands in the process. Another use is to trigger Beifong's Bounty HuntersBeifong's Bounty Hunters by sacrificing the tokens.

#19: Ensoul Artifact

Ensoul Artifact

Number of Combos: 64

Deck Inclusions: 2,800 decks (0.07%)

Ensoul ArtifactEnsoul Artifact attaches to an artifact and animates it, thus making it a creature. Animating artifacts is a surprisingly useful tool for combos, enabling interactions with Voltaic ConstructVoltaic Construct, as an example.

Ensoul Artifact lets you animate a mana rock such as Mana VaultMana Vault, and then tap and untap it infinitely with Voltaic Construct. The added creature type also allows you to reduce the artifact's abilities with Training GroundsTraining Grounds, making abilities cheaper, and even creating infinite combos for Basalt MonolithBasalt Monolith.

#18: Mechanized Production

Mechanized Production

Number of Combos: 66

Deck Inclusions: 127,706 decks (3.15%)

Mechanized ProductionMechanized Production is an easy win condition for artifact decks, letting you create copies of an artifact you control and win the game when you control eight or more artifacts with the same name. Notably, the artifacts sharing a name don't have to be the artifact Mechanized Production is attached to.

This allows Brass's BountyBrass's Bounty, Officious InterrogationOfficious Interrogation, or Bootleggers' StashBootleggers' Stash to easily hit this threshold. Mechanized Production can also be used to easily get infinite turns with Time SieveTime Sieve, creating copies of Myr BattlesphereMyr Battlesphere and similar creature to make five artifacts each turn.

#17: Pariah / With Great Power...

Pariah
With Great Power...

Number of Combos: 67 each

Deck Inclusions: 42,451 decks (Pariah); 17,519 decks (Power)

PariahPariah and With Great Power...With Great Power... redirect damage that would be dealt to you to a creature you control instead. When attached to an indestructible creature, these cards stop you from taking damage until the creature is removed from the battlefield.

Beyond indestructibility, there are many more effects that can work in this fashion, including those featured on Anti-Venom, Horrifying HealerAnti-Venom, Horrifying Healer and VigorVigor. Pariah and With Great Power... can also redirect damage from Wheel of MisfortuneWheel of Misfortune to an opponent, dealing an arbitrarily large amount of damage to them and killing them on the spot.

#16: Presence of Gond

Presence of Gond

Number of Combos: 81

Deck Inclusions: 14,775 decks (0.39%)

Presence of GondPresence of Gond lets any creature tap to make a 1/1 Elf Warrior creature token. This effect works beautifully with Midnight GuardMidnight Guard, which'll untap itself as the creature enters. Intruder AlarmIntruder Alarm also untaps the creature in the same fashion, and Thornbite StaffThornbite Staff can untap the creature on the token's death.

There's a plethora of other cards that can untap themselves that can work great with Presence of Gond with some help, including Devoted DruidDevoted Druid and MorphlingMorphling, among others.

#15: Wheel of Sun and Moon

Wheel of Sun and Moon

Number of Combos: 82

Deck Inclusions: 4,113 decks (0.24%)

Wheel of Sun and MoonWheel of Sun and Moon is a unique card that cycles cards back into a player's library instead of putting them into a graveyard. While this effect does eliminate death triggers entirely, it also opens a new class of combos centered around fetching cards from your library.

Wheel of Sun and Moon, when paired with Rootpath PurifierRootpath Purifier, lets Fabled PassageFabled Passage fetch itself. Wheel of Sun and Moon can also work for extra turn spells, where an empty library will let you draw the spell every turn. Outside of mill strategies, an easy way to empty your library is LevelerLeveler or DoomsdayDoomsday.

#14: One with the Kami

One with the Kami

Number of Combos: 84

Deck Inclusions: 12,957 decks (0.34%)

One with the KamiOne with the Kami makes creature tokens as modified creatures you control die. While One with the Kami is an Aura, it allows all modified creatures to gain the ability to make tokens. Modifying the tokens itself allows them to make more tokens, and fortunately, this is easy to do. Equipment with equip costs like Lightning GreavesLightning Greaves and ShukoShuko work well, moving them around as needed.

Since counters also count as modifications, causing the tokens to enter with them can be solved by Master ChefMaster Chef or Bloodspore ThrinaxBloodspore Thrinax. Another option is Mazirek, Kraul Death PriestMazirek, Kraul Death Priest to place counters on death.

#13: Gift of Immortality

Gift of Immortality

Number of Combos: 84

Deck Inclusions: 59,684 decks (1.56%)

Gift of ImmortalityGift of Immortality doesn't give indestructibility or protection, as the name may suggest, but it does let creatures move from the graveyard to the battlefield at will. Gift of Immortality will also return itself to the battlefield during the end step, offering a convenient way to get it back onto the battlefield.

However, we need to return Gift of Immortality quicker, and cards like Archon of Falling StarsArchon of Falling Stars and Sun TitanSun Titan make that easy. If you also want a cute dog to combo with, then Dogmeat, Ever LoyalDogmeat, Ever Loyal can be another option.

#12: Power Artifact

Power Artifact

Number of Combos: 87

Deck Inclusions: 10,996 decks (0.27%)

Power ArtifactPower Artifact reduces the cost of artifact activated abilities, similar to how Biomancer's FamiliarBiomancer's Familiar works for creatures. While Power Artifact only applies to one artifact at a time, that's enough for combos with Grim MonolithGrim Monolith to become easier.

Power Artifact also reduces abilities from Filigree SagesFiligree Sages, Sword of the ParunsSword of the Paruns and Pili-PalaPili-Pala, enabling more combos with some additional pieces.

Even without a combo, reducing costs of abilities is always a plus, so throwing Power Artifact on a creature like Chrome DomeChrome Dome is always a plus.

#11: Traveling Plague

Traveling Plague

Number of Combos: 90

Deck Inclusions: 623 decks (0.01%)

Traveling PlagueTraveling Plague is a card rarely seen in Commander decks - currently in fewer than 700, according to EDHREC. While Traveling Plague certainly isn't a popular or powerful card on its surface, it does have one use: it recurs itself to the battlefield. This effect means you can constantly get constellation triggers as long as your creature count can support it.

A perfect pairing for Traveling Plague is Archon of Sun's GraceArchon of Sun's Grace to make more creatures as it enters. Other variants include Ajani's ChosenAjani's Chosen and Ghostly DancersGhostly Dancers.
