The Top 10 Most Played Commander Cards in Avatar

It'll Quench Ya!It'll Quench Ya! | Art by Nathaniel Himawan

Hey, everyone! The official release of Lorwyn Eclipsed is just days away, as of this writing. I've certainly let myself get dragged by the undertow of hype, as you might be able to tell from my last two articles covering most played cards with Lorwyn's evoke and persist mechanics. But, let's not forget about the outgoing booster draft set that will nonetheless remain in Commander players' hearts its for its faithful and fun interpretation of its beloved source material.

That's right, today we're looking at the most played cards from Avatar: The Last Airbender! Let's dive right in!

10. Avatar's WrathAvatar's Wrath - 35,009 decks

Avatar's Wrath

This not-quite-Wrath of GodWrath of God is still a giant pause button for your opponents' board development, even if it lets them replay their exiled creatures and even reuse enters triggers.

And, this being Commander, there are lots of legendary creatures that actually prefer stuff getting exiled to going to the graveyard. Staying close to home, Avatar AangAvatar Aang appreciates the ability to airbend while also having a path cleared for him to attack and trigger firebending. Exile your own creatures with waterbending and earthbending abilities, and you've just transformed your Aang!

Fire Lord ZukoFire Lord Zuko can net you a big turn by chaining together your own creatures into an unstoppable army. Beyond, well, Universes Beyond, Rocco, Street ChefRocco, Street Chef also generates a bunch of Food tokens and counters the more creatures you have exiled.

Fire Lord Zuko
Rocco, Street Chef

Once you look at this card more like a mass blink spell for your stuff that also delays the opponent, you can let go of the fact that this is costed and named like a white sweeper without actually doing the same thing.

9. Abandoned Air TempleAbandoned Air Temple - 37,687 decks

Abandoned Air Temple

I immediately clocked Temple as a potential upgrade on Gavony TownshipGavony Township in my article on best lands and artifacts from Avatar.  EDHREC users seem to agree, slotting this explosive utility land in decks ranging from monocolor beatdown with Giada, Font of HopeGiada, Font of Hope, to go-wide kindred piles like Sokka, Tenacious TacticianSokka, Tenacious Tactician, to counters-matters decks led by Tidus, Yuna's GuardianTidus, Yuna's Guardian and others.

Tidus, Yuna's Guardian

8. Ba Sing SeBa Sing Se - 38,228 decks

Ba Sing Se

You win some, you lose some. If I remember correctly, Ba Sing SeBa Sing Se missed the list because I was a little unimpressed with how it only made 2/2 worth of stats at a time for four mana, which would sometimes need to be tapped outside of combat. I massively discounted how much lands-matters cards wanted it, as well as its combo potential:

csb logo

Aside from the rebuttal that you can make lands bigger than 2/2 over time, this has so much upside even after you've taken into account that this produces bodies in a land slot (lands that make creatures are good!).

Raggadragga, Goreguts BossRaggadragga, Goreguts Boss interacts so well with these 2/2 lands, while Black Panther, Wakandan KingBlack Panther, Wakandan King squeezes extra value out of those counters and can put them on something more threatening. There is no below par in Ba Sing Se.

7. Fire Nation PalaceFire Nation Palace - 39,038 decks

Fire Nation Palace

I also missed on Fire Nation PalaceFire Nation Palace, which is a little embarrassing, considering how it's a Pyretic RitualPyretic Ritual on a stick as long as you build your deck correctly. That isn't hard though, as there are tons of ways to take advantage of an extra two mana you only get during combat.

Predictably, Palace is a common inclusion in firebending-themed decks led by Fire Nation scions like Fire Lord AzulaFire Lord Azula, Ozai, the Phoenix KingOzai, the Phoenix King, and Fire Lord ZukoFire Lord Zuko. How else are you going to activate that Fire Nation TurretFire Nation Turret?

Fire Lord Zuko

Casting our net wider than just Zuko's family tree, Electro, Assaulting BatteryElectro, Assaulting Battery also likes having access to a bunch of extra mana, while Isshin, Two Heavens as OneIsshin, Two Heavens as One doubles your money and lets you cast some expensive instants: ElectrodominanceElectrodominance, maybe, or Big ScoreBig Score?

6. Shared RootsShared Roots - 40,304 decks

Shared Roots

We love a straight-up utility card and a functional reprint in this house, because consistency and redundancy are great things to have in Commander. You aren't going to be pulling up any trees with Shared RootsShared Roots, but your Rampant GrowthRampant Growth and Three VisitsThree Visits are what get you to your big, splashy, multicolor payoffs!

You even get upside at no extra charge, because cards like Iroh, Grand LotusIroh, Grand Lotus, Sokka, Bold BoomerangerSokka, Bold Boomeranger, and Gran-GranGran-Gran all get you some extra value out of the Lesson card type.

5. Badgermole CubBadgermole Cub - 40,664 decks

Badgermole Cub

Chances are, if a cheap creature is rampaging through competitive Constructed formats like Standard, then it probably has some juice in Commander as well. In fact, this has the juice, pulp, and zest to hang with the best creatures here by simply generating a ton of mana.

You can realize this vast potential simply by running the types of cards that are popular in this format. Llanowar ElvesLlanowar Elves, Lotus CobraLotus Cobra, and Arcane SignetArcane Signet are great examples.

You could also go the combo route:

Copying Cub also leads to crazy turns because of how well the mana generation scales, so keep that in mind when you're looking for a juicy Rite of ReplicationRite of Replication target!

4. Wan Shi Tong, LibrarianWan Shi Tong, Librarian - 40,684 decks, 1,185 as commander

Wan Shi Tong, Librarian

Do we want to draw cards? Another cheap yet incredibly potent creature, Wan Shi Tong is both a card advantage engine and a disruptive threat against shuffling, which players do a lot of in Commander. Every fetch or tutor makes this flier bigger and gives you more options to boot. It's no wonder he made Harvey McGuinness' list of top cEDH cards from 2025!

Likewise, being cheap and flexible, you'll find this Bird in various deck archetypes, from big mana with Kinnan, Bonder ProdigyKinnan, Bonder Prodigy to Choco, Seeker of ParadiseChoco, Seeker of Paradise Bird kindred, to Sisay, Weatherlight CaptainSisay, Weatherlight Captain Legends.

3. Secret TunnelSecret Tunnel - 44,889 decks

Secret Tunnel

Tunnel may not be strictly as powerful as Temple or Palace, but you can play it in any deck and it directly contributes to a victory through sneaky combat. The fact that it makes you jump through a bit of a hoop to fully realize its value is almost trivial. Many aggressive decks have typal components anyway, so it's easy to run this in Yuriko, the Tiger's ShadowYuriko, the Tiger's Shadow and Ninjas, Lathril, Blade of the ElvesLathril, Blade of the Elves, or Pantlaza, Sun-FavoredPantlaza, Sun-Favored and Dinosaurs.

Lathril, Blade of the Elves
Pantlaza, Sun-Favored

It also has a bit of a hidden mode in earthbending decks and decks that make lands into creatures. I admit, it took me a few reads before I understood what Tunnel also being unblockable meant. Trust me, it's not trinket text in a format where you can animate a land, make it huge, and go to town.

Wrenn and Realmbreaker
Nissa, Who Shakes the World
Nissa, Vital Force

2. Bender's WaterskinBender's Waterskin - 71,342 decks

Bender's Waterskin

More utility cards makes me happy; they're what make the format tick! I've had my eye on the Waterskin since Avatar previews. It's the type of card that scales well with the number of opponents playing a game. You might scoff at a three-mana rock, but wait till it nets you double-digit pips of mana throughout a long, multiplayer game, letting you constantly keep cheap protection. disruption, and tutor spells at the ready.

An Offer You Can't Refuse
Lightning Bolt

1. Redirect LightningRedirect Lightning - 80,485 decks

Redirect Lightning

Speaking of cheap protection spells, this is the type of thing you want to threaten with the Waterskin. Five life as an alternate cost is a breeze in Commander, especially when it's both saving your commander from a removal and dealing with an opponents'.

Deflecting SwatDeflecting Swat and Bolt BendBolt Bend are widely played in the format because of how they can change the course of the game in a color that sometimes has trouble dealing with anything beyond a creature with toughness less than or equal to five.

I'm Sorry It Has to End This Way, BrotherI'm Sorry It Has to End This Way, Brother

As an avid drafter, I'm gonna miss Avatar. As a Commander player, I'm excited to see how this list evolves over the coming months and even years. The Cabbage MerchantThe Cabbage Merchant got a ton of plaudits last year, even topping Harvey McGuinness' list of best cEDH cards from 2025. That suggests it won't remain off this list forever.

What's your favorite Avatar card that didn't make the list? Let us know!
