Hello, everyone, my name's Jonathan and today I'll be going over Uugguu, the OmniplasmUugguu, the Omniplasm, one of the commanders spoiled for the expansion Mystery Booster Commander Edition.

The Commander

This commander gets more interesting the more you look at it. On the surface it's just an Ooze general, which is something we were still missing but not anything groundbreaking. But then, the subthemes start to emerge, spanning from Tokens to Sacrifice and Reanimation. And just like that, a pretty generic commander becomes intriguing and open to multiple builds.

Today, I'll be going over my first draft for this deck, but then I'll be highlighting alternative options that people have started brewing. In this way you'll have a broader overview of what the possibilities are with this card as we wait for its release.

The Creatures

The pool of available Ooze creatures is surprisingly deep, to the point that it's possible to actually select the ones you're including in your deck (and this can't be said for every creature type). In fact, before even starting to talk about subthemes, there are quite a few cards that are simply good with the commander.

Starting with an oldie, Biowaste BlobBiowaste Blob has finally found a stable home. During each of your turns it'll propagate and grow your entire board, but this is old news. What's interesting now is how well it synergizes with Uugguu, the OmniplasmUugguu, the Omniplasm, to the point that it might as well gain hexproof. In fact, killing it won't stop the chain of creatures, but rather increase even more its growing speed.

Next is Mitotic SlimeMitotic Slime, another card that usually struggles outside dedicated token decks. Nonetheless, the number of creatures it can create with this new general is simply outrageous, giving an enormous boost to any creatures-matter card we have.

Lastly, Acidic SlimeAcidic Slime is the first card I thought about when crafting the deck list. It's way too expensive for a removal spell in modern Magic, I know. But when you can get its effect three times, even the 2/2 stat line isn't that bad after all.

+1/+1 Counters

One of the secondary themes I decided to include in my list is +1/+1 counters, which pairs well with the go-wide idea present both in our commander and a decent amount of other creatures. Also, keep in mind our goal is to get two copies of each of the creatures we play.

We will start with Oran-Rief OozeOran-Rief Ooze, which will grow our board turn after turn. This is because we can attack with it recklessly as long as Uugguu, the OmniplasmUugguu, the Omniplasm is on the battlefield to get both of its triggered abilities going.

Aeve, Progenitor OozeAeve, Progenitor Ooze was the previous Ooze commander, although with a storm flavor. Here it can simply be a huge creature, splitting into more copies of itself both with storm and our commander.

On a similar note, Biogenic OozeBiogenic Ooze benefits from being copied too. It'll put counters on our board while also being able to grow itself. Its feeble stat line usually is a drawback, but here it only means it's easier to duplicate this creature.

Sacrifice Subtheme

As I said at the beginning of the article, there are many strategies you can build around when creating your own list. Mine develops a self-sacrifice theme. In particular, I built it around cards such as Corrupted ConvictionCorrupted Conviction and Not Dead After AllNot Dead After All. In this way, you can use your creatures for value, get them back and also get two additional copies of them.

Repeatable sacrifice outlets are particularly good, as they make chaining creatures even easier. Evolutionary LeapEvolutionary Leap brings us from one creature to the next with no effort, making sure we both have sacrifice fodder and a sacrifice outlet. Ashnod's AltarAshnod's Altar is a classic staple, giving us two colorless mana for each creature we sacrifice, which is never a bad rate. Finally, Greater GoodGreater Good transforms creatures into cards so that we never run out of gas.

In the typal synergies department, it's all about recursion and additional triggers.

UnburyUnbury, Raise the DraugrRaise the Draugr and Return from ExtinctionReturn from Extinction all allow us to recover our fallen Oozes, which we are more than happy to see (and sacrifice) again.

Haunted OneHaunted One, Patriarch's BiddingPatriarch's Bidding and Haunting VoyageHaunting Voyage go a step even further, making sure our creatures come back to the battlefield ready to fight over and over again.

Finally, Roaming ThroneRoaming Throne and Reflections of LittjaraReflections of Littjara are insane value engines, doubling up on creatures and/or permanents to overwhelm our opponents with our board state.

A Possible Deck List

The Alternative Paths

So, what else is there for Uugguu, the OmniplasmUugguu, the Omniplasm? Let's take a look at its EDHREC page.

One possible route is to go all-in on Token synergies. Draw cards with Mister Fantastic, Reed RichardsMister Fantastic, Reed Richards or get even more creatures with Adrix and Nev, TwincastersAdrix and Nev, Twincasters or Second HarvestSecond Harvest. You'll flood the board and then OverrunOverrun your opponents for the win.

Tied to this plan we can also find somewhat of an Aristocrats-type deck. In fact, if we want to sacrifice our creatures to create tokens, we might as well throw a Blood ArtistBlood Artist into the mix to get even more value from their deaths. Add some usual suspects like Viscera SeerViscera Seer and Zulaport CutthroatZulaport Cutthroat and enjoy this trigger galore.

Otherwise, you could also pair tokens and +1/+1 counters. We've already seen how a number of Oozes care about growing your creatures' stats, so why shouldn't you stick to the bit and include The Earth CrystalThe Earth Crystal, Doubling SeasonDoubling Season and Hardened ScalesHardened Scales?

Creatures with changeling synergize with our strategy as well. All of them count as Oozes for Uugguu, the OmniplasmUugguu, the Omniplasm, thus they'll come back twice as strong from the dead. Mutable ExplorerMutable Explorer will give us lands, Chomping ChangelingChomping Changeling some interaction and GraveshifterGraveshifter recursion.

Clones work fantastically as well, creating intricate loops of creatures and recursion. Phantasmal ImagePhantasmal Image, Cackling CounterpartCackling Counterpart or even the classic CloneClone are all looking forward to swarming your board with Oozes.

As you can see, there's a lot going on with this commander. I'm sure that, with time, even more perspectives about Uugguu, the Omniplasm will be discovered. Have you found any undiscovered ones? Let me know in the comments below!
