Hexhaven's Stingerquill college is the flipside of Strixhaven's Silverquill, replacing white with red in order to push debate toward a new, violent level...
Long time readers of mine will know that my favorite commander is none other than Shadrix SilverquillShadrix Silverquill, so it truly is an honor that I get to build a deck around his Echoverse substitute, Ingris StingerquillIngris Stingerquill.
My name is Tyler 'Savesya' Bucks, and today I get to show off a truly aggressive 99 built around this Elder Sphinx that you can pick up for about $40 (excluding the price of the commander, since it just got revealed this week). Let's kick things off by getting to know the commander of the deck a little bit better!
What Does Ingris Stingerquill Bring to the Table?
The Hexhaven college that Ingris StingerquillIngris Stingerquill leads is all about vicious responses and cutting remarks, which is captured perfectly on this Sphinx's textbox. The goal for this deck is to send creatures into combat, and deal as much damage in a single turn as possible. That plan can get off the ground as early as turn three, so as you look over this Bracket 2 list, you'll see a lot of low-to-the-ground threats that are poised and ready to be sent towards people's faces.
If you ever get to a point where you're looking for an outlet for all your mana, Ingris has that second activated ability that shouldn't be overlooked. Making a token and giving your entire team haste can simply lead you to a win out of nowhere! This deck's goal is to send creatures into combat and lower people's life totals in more ways than one. So, with that in mind, let's get started by looking at just a few examples of the cards that will help with that plan.
Lowering Life Totals
- HellriderHellrider: Having redundancy in a deck's 99 is always important, because when you have this Devil and your commander out, you'll be dealing a whole lot of damage for simply assigning attackers.
- Sanguine SyphonerSanguine Syphoner: There are several creatures like this Vampire in the deck that drain the table as they attack. They all can come down before Ingris, which means that you'll be lowering life totals and buffing up your own right away.
- Shocking SharpshooterShocking Sharpshooter: The main goal of this deck is to flood the board with creatures in order to send them into combat, so pingers like this will help deal even more damage when members of your team simply enter play.
- Far Fortune, End BossFar Fortune, End Boss: While hitting max speed might not seem too easy to reliably pull off for most decks, it's tailor made for a strategy like this. Once you get to that point, you'll be adding one additional damage to each point of pain you dish out.
- Hawkeye, Young AvengerHawkeye, Young Avenger: Here's an uncommon from the Marvel set that really powers up this deck. Even if you only attack with one creature, you'll deal three damage to each opponent when you have this Hero and your commander in play.
Raising Your Own Life Total
Something great about Ingris StingerquillIngris Stingerquill is that the pinging ability is given to that creature itself when it attacks, which means that if you swing with a lifelinker, it's the one that's dealing one damage to each opponent, gaining you that much life in return. Here are just a few of the creatures with lifelink that make up this deck.
- Vault SkirgeVault Skirge: This flyer can be cast for two life and a single mana, which is a great way to cheat on some of that cost, but it's also just incredibly useful for freely attacking turn after turn.
- Alchemist's AssistantAlchemist's Assistant: While this creature's low toughness may seem like a downside, the fact that you can pay two in order to hand a lifelink counter to another one of your powerful creatures means that you can continue this tricky lifegain interaction even from the grave.
- Morlun, Devourer of SpidersMorlun, Devourer of Spiders: Here's a great mana sink that can straight up take a player out of the game if their life total is low enough, while still being a big beater that you can send into combat once the dust settles.
Card Advantage
- Scheming SilvertongueScheming Silvertongue: As we previously covered, flyers with lifelink are great for this deck, but this creature has the upside of allowing you to cast Sign in BloodSign in Blood over and over again, on top of everything else.
- Garna, Bloodfist of KeldGarna, Bloodfist of Keld: Since the whole goal with this deck is to send creatures into combat, you're probably going to be losing a few as the game goes on. Getting a replacement card for each attacker that bites the dust will help you keep up with the rest of the table.
- Elegy AcolyteElegy Acolyte: Here's a creature that I'm very happy is in the budget range, since it not only provides you with a good amount of card advantage, but it also creates a Robot if something leaves your battlefield at the end of your turn.
- Raphael's TechniqueRaphael's Technique: This style of deck typically dumps its hand into play by the mid-game, which means that you'll need a good refill toward the end of the game. Bouncing something unblocked back to your hand, and then drawing seven could just be what pushes you towards a win.
- Bloodsoaked InsightBloodsoaked Insight: Lowering people's life totals is the plan, which means that this half-land half-spell could be cast for only two mana. Stealing someone else's creature with a cool attack trigger will make for a fun story to tell after your game wraps up!
- Gollum, Scheming GuideGollum, Scheming Guide: How good is your poker face? Well, even if it's not that great, this silly little guy is a free attacker that could possibly draw you a card turn after turn.
Saving Creatures from Death
- Alesha, Who Laughs at FateAlesha, Who Laughs at Fate: I'm a massive fan of this legend, and it works so well with this 99. Since you're looking to attack constantly, Alesha can bring threats back over and over again.
- Nullpriest of OblivionNullpriest of Oblivion: Here's a creature that fits really well into the curve of this deck. It can come down the turn before your commander, in order to get sent into combat, or it can bring something useful back in the late game if you pay the kicker.
- Ares, God of WarAres, God of War: If you ever get into a situation where you're reluctant to attack, due to someone having strong defenses, then this Villain can come down and allow you to swing freely into danger!
- UnearthUnearth: Most of the creatures in this deck cost three or less mana, including your commander. Which means that this spell could bring back almost any key team member when you need it the most.
- Ghost LanternGhost Lantern: Here's another card that plays double duty in this deck, since it can return a creature from your bin to your hand. Plus, it can be equipped to a creature in order to help it grow with counters over time.
- Undying MaliceUndying Malice: As the game goes on, Ingris is going to most likely become a lightning rod for removal. So, it might be a good idea to hold up one mana in order to save your game plan as other people take their turns.
Mana Ramp
- Zookeeper MechanZookeeper Mechan: Since this deck is very low to the ground, there are only a few ways to add more mana to the board. This mana dork is a great one, since it helps you cast more spells, or can attack forward from time to time since it has a higher toughness.
- Solemn SimulacrumSolemn Simulacrum: Here's a creature that comes down the turn after Ingris, finds you a land, and then can be sent into combat in order to die and draw you a card. That's a lot of solid value for this list.
- Charming ScoundrelCharming Scoundrel: While this Rogue doesn't provide you with long-term ramp, it does offer up several useful abilities, on a hasty body. Plus, since your commander is three full pips, that Treasure could help fix your mana on turn two in order to cast Ingris on curve the following turn.

My Final Thoughts on Ingris Stingerquill
Well, there you have it, my budget 99 built around Ingris StingerquillIngris Stingerquill that you can pick up for about $40 (using TCGplayer pricing). I hope this deck tech got you a little more hyped for this set, because I got incredibly excited for the things to come while building this one.
If you're looking for additional budget content from me, you can find more of my articles on EDHREC, like a recent one where I list more than 150 budget lands that I use to build these decks. Or you can check out my YouTube channel The Pillow Fort, where it's my mission to make Magic more accessible for everyone!
Also, as a final note, you'll notice that I refrained from including creatures with infect like FlensermiteFlensermite in this list. If you want to go that route yourself, feel free, but I didn't want to immediately put a target on the back of anyone picking up this list. Anyway, that's it for me today, I'll catch you next week with another budget deck tech for an upcoming legend from this set!
