On Thursday, April 30th, Wizards of the Coast posted some interesting information on social media. According to Wizards, the Secrets of Strixhaven Prerelease events were the most widely attended Prereleases in the game's history! There is no doubt that Wizards deserves a pat on their proverbial back for it. But let's explore why and how SOS got to such a popular point, so read on!
Wizards of the Coast's Statement
As mentioned above, today, Wizards of the Coast released a brief but proud statement on their social media platforms. In it, they informed readers that Secrets of Strixhaven showed the most Prerelease attendance of any Prerelease event that Magic: The Gathering has yet offered:
Congratulations and thanks to the Gathering for making Secrets of Strixhaven the biggest Prerelease since War of the Spark. We are continuing to celebrate Secrets of Strixhaven at MagicCon: Las Vegas. And, as always, you can join the Gathering at your local game store!

This news is not coverage that needs a ton of explanation on the surface, only that it's a big deal for the game and for Wizards of the Coast themselves. So, why did SOS do so well among Prerelease goers?
What's the Secret of Secrets of Strixhaven's Success?
Frankly, there are a plethora of reasons why players might have attended a Secrets of Strixhaven Prerelease event. For starters, SOS comes after a bit of a lull in the form of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. TMNT was a bit of a flop for the same reason that players might've seen Spider-Man as a flop. New York City is a fantastic place, and I am not ashamed of my roots there. However, it is too modern and too mundane a setting for the more typical sensibilities that draw in many Magic: The Gathering players. To this end, a lot of players have claimed they wished to skip Turtles in favor of in-world Magic sets like Lorwyn Eclipsed or, as evidenced by the numbers, Secrets of Strixhaven.
Additionally, we are actually on the precipice of visiting New York City once again with Marvel Super Heroes coming in June. And, following that, a return to Middle-Earth with The Hobbit, before we go back to the Magic Multiverse with Reality Fracture. The fact that we are getting more Universes Beyond settings than in-world Magic settings this year has raised many eyebrows in the game's overarching communities. As such, there's a real chance that a more-or-less silent contingent of players is skipping the Universes Beyond offerings. Or, at least, the ones that offer mundane modernity.
But this is largely delving into speculation at this stage, and honestly, people seem to like Secrets of Strixhaven enough that the numbers shot through the roof. Let's enjoy this victory for the game for what it is! Congratulations to Wizards of the Coast on another set well done!
