<p>It feels nice to come back to Middle-earth! I doubt we swing by again anytime soon, but I’ll enjoy the ride while we have it. There’s a lot to talk about from the set, from the cool commanders to bold new potential staples like <a href="https://edhrec.com/articles/is-orcrist-goblin-cleaver-a-new-staple-for-typal-commander-decks">Orcrist</a>. Let’s talk about the weird and wacky enchantments, from toys for <a href="https://edhrec.com/commanders/tom-bombadil">Tom Bombadil</a> to a potential slot in cEDH lists…</p>
<h2><span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="An Unexpected Party" href="#" target="_blank">An Unexpected Party</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span></h2>

<p>Named for the first chapter of the book, it feels right to start here. This can start out as an Adventure that creates a bunch of Dwarf tokens for us, but the main event is choosing a creature type and giving them all +2/+2. Giving creatures +2/+2 as a static ability has only been done on nine black-border cards.</p>
<p><span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Dictate of Heliod" href="#" target="_blank">Dictate of Heliod</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> is the cleanest, having no qualifications, but it’s five mana. Another clear comparison is <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Rally the Ranks" href="#" target="_blank">Rally the Ranks</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, a modernized <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Shared Triumph" href="#" target="_blank">Shared Triumph</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, which is half the cost and half the effect. This is a four-mana card that requires you to be committed to a creature type, but does have the upside of the token-making spell.</p>
<p>I suspect most Commander players are going to see “make X Dwarf tokens” and decide it’s only for decks focusing on <a href="https://edhrec.com/tags/dwarves">that creature type</a>, but I hope to be proven wrong. (<a href="https://edhrec.com/tags/shapeshifters">Changeling</a> decks will also want this, but any deck with a single-creature-type focus can benefit from the big buff.)</p>

<p>I love that this is about casting noncreature spells <i>and</i> that it checks for the mana spent. That’s been a recent design tweak that came to us from the <a href="https://edhrec.com/sets/fin">Final Fantasy</a> set and it’s welcome. Being mana-gated, it doesn’t have to be a once-per-turn effect either, so chaining two- and three-mana spells to just churn through the deck without really refilling your hand is an option!</p>
<p>The best use case for this is obviously in decks with <a href="https://edhrec.com/tags/big-mana">Big Spells</a>. The noncreature batching goes far and wide — <a href="https://edhrec.com/tags/enchantress">Enchantment</a>, <a href="https://edhrec.com/tags/artifacts">Artifact</a>, <a href="https://edhrec.com/tags/spellslinger">Spellslinger</a>, and <a href="https://edhrec.com/tags/unnatural">Unnatural</a> are all popular themes that this works very well in, not to mention various subsets like <a href="https://edhrec.com/tags/equipment">Equipment</a> or <a href="https://edhrec.com/tags/auras">Auras</a>. This will most commonly go for enchantments due to being one itself but also because artifacts have so many tokens now that enters effects are more valued there. No worries — they’ve got their own insane enchantment to draw cards…</p>

<p><a href="https://edhrec.com/tags/bears">Bears</a> will love this for their theme decks, but any green deck that likes to play big creature spells (99%?) will get nutty value out of it. This is a strictly better version of <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Zendikar&#039;s Roil" href="#" target="_blank">Zendikar&#039;s Roil</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> (outside of dedicated Elemental decks), and that card is a solid pick.</p>
<p>This card is good for catching up after board wipes and for applying pressure to race clocks. The fact that you can put the counters on the tokens shouldn’t be underestimated. Bear lovers will scoop this up in droves, but it’s a wide-use card for sure.</p>

<p>I have to give love to a Saga or two, and this one caught my eye for doing something unique: giving blue a way to trigger landfall rather than just pay it off with yet another <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Tatyova, Benthic Druid" href="#" target="_blank">Tatyova, Benthic Druid</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> effect. Exiling lands to bring them back is a fantastic way to do this in blue and I hope to see more and more of it.</p>
<p>Outside of <a href="https://edhrec.com/tags/landfall">Landfall</a> decks, this is a good engine for <a href="https://edhrec.com/tags/blink">Blink</a> decks, comparable to <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Thassa, Deep-Dwelling" href="#" target="_blank">Thassa, Deep-Dwelling</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>. While Thassa itself sticks around the whole game and has indestructible, this little Saga is a mana cheaper and can act as pseudo-ramp. The land comes back untapped, so if you tap it before blinking, it’ll be available to cast spells on your opponents’ turns.</p>
<p>This can’t blink other enchantments, but the Final Fantasy set did include some creatures that happen to also be <a href="https://edhrec.com/tags/sagas">Sagas</a>, which is another strong use case for this card. There are a lot of little hooks to this Saga, and I expect to see it cast far and wide.</p>

<p>This card is, like, sooooo not okay. It doesn’t have any of the usual limiters: no “if it was cast,” no “nontoken,” no “once (or twice) per turn,” or even a “during your turn” so you can feel free to hold up flash artifacts alongside your counterspells! There is one safety valve: it’s not a “may” ability, meaning you absolutely need to be careful after landing this for fear of decking out. If only players had some way to win by decking out in blue. Oh well!</p>
<p>This would have been the grand slam number one pick, if not for the final entry. As is, it’s still a shoo-in for any artifact deck with blue in it (which is… most of them). Five mana isn’t a major roadblock to this in an artifact deck full of Signets and Treasure tokens, either, so look forward to this coming down on turn three in many of your games this fall.</p>

Don’t knock it — being four mana is slow but more than fair.</p>
<p><span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Down in the Valley" href="#" target="_blank">Down in the Valley</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> is mostly for Elf players or for the occasional Johnny/Jenny who wants to rewind the story to give it multiple instances of its landfall trigger…</p>
<p><span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Along the Crooked Way" href="#" target="_blank">Along the Crooked Way</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> is a <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Raise Dead" href="#" target="_blank">Raise Dead</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> that has ongoing value for graveyard manipulators like <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Syr Konrad, the Grim" href="#" target="_blank">Syr Konrad, the Grim</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>. That activated ability ain’t nothing in <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Grub, Storied Matriarch" href="#" target="_blank">Grub, Storied Matriarch</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, either.</p>

<p>Here it is — the nightmare. Half the cost of <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Smothering Tithe" href="#" target="_blank">Smothering Tithe</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> without the explosiveness but also without “do you pay the <span class="mana-container-container"><span class="mana-container"><i class="ms ms-cost ms-2" style="margin-left: inherit !important;"></i></span></span>?” drawing endless ire. It also provides an outlet for the mana with an effect that will trigger itself while drawing you a card. It’s a raw value engine that can even become a win condition with infinite mana (it says “two target players” but doesn’t require either of those be you, which means you can exclusively target your opponents to deck them).</p>
<p>So, to break it down, this card is:</p>

<p>Hello, and welcome to the EDHREC review of the best enchantments in the Universes Beyond set <em>Marvel's Spider-Man</em>. And boy howdy, are there some <em>amazing</em> enchantments in this set, some that make for outright <em>spectacular</em> additions of the Commander cannon.</p>
<p>So with no further ado, let's take a look at some of the most <em>sensational</em> enchantments of this new set.</p>
<h2>Impostor Syndrome</h2>

<p>At this point there's a lot of ways to make nonlegendary clones of your creatures. But what really makes <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Impostor Syndrome" href="#" target="_blank">Impostor Syndrome</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> stand out is the ability to make multiple clones of multiple creatures very quickly - particularly more expensive creatures.</p>
<p>Whether you're playing a Faerie deck, or some other iteration of a weenie list, or something filled with bigger, pricey bodies, the ability to drop it right before you declare attackers is game-changing.</p>
<p>You can smack someone in the face for a decent bit of damage and leave copies of those creatures back to block and keep your own face safe from an <em>ultimate</em> counterstrike.</p>
<p>I'm just glad design finally found a way to give <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Miirym, Sentinel Wyrm" href="#" target="_blank">Miirym, Sentinel Wyrm</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> players the boost they needed.</p>
<h2>Parker Luck</h2>

<p>One of the accurate critiques of old-head Commander staple <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Phyrexian Arena" href="#" target="_blank">Phyrexian Arena</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> is that you spend three mana to cast it, and it doesn't actually generate you any value for a full turn.</p>
<p><span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Parker Luck" href="#" target="_blank">Parker Luck</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> somewhat circumvents that problem by triggering at the beginning of the end step, whereupon you and target player each reveal the top card of your library, and each lose life equal to the mana value of the card the other person revealed before putting it into hand.</p>
<p>The trade-off here of course is you're giving an opponent a card, and you're risking losing a decent amount of life in the process.</p>
<p>Technically, you don't have to choose yourself as one of the targets, either, so there are conceivably situations where you could use this just to deal damage to two opponents. A situation exists where someone could use their Parker Luck to take out two low-life enemies. I'm not sure that's a reason to run it, but it's worth noting.</p>
<h2>Rent Is Due</h2>

<p>The fact that you must tap two untapped creatures or Treasures to draw a card at your end step or sacrifice <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Rent Is Due" href="#" target="_blank">Rent Is Due</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> is a steep cost to pay. Luckily this enchantment only costs a single white mana to cast.</p>
<p>Is it worth losing the utility of two creatures or Treasures to draw a single card each turn? Hard to say. I feel like this probably would have been safe even without the mandatory clause, but it's still another interesting attempt to conservatively give white more card draw options.</p>
<h2>Shadow of the Goblin</h2>

<p>Two mana to get a repeated rummage effect is fairly decent, particularly in a deck that views putting things into the yard as an upside, whether that's a reanimator shell or something that cares about discarding, like <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Anje Falkenrath" href="#" target="_blank">Anje Falkenrath</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>.</p>
<p>The card text on <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Shadow of the Goblin" href="#" target="_blank">Shadow of the Goblin</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> doesn't end there, though, because whenever you cast a spell or play a land from anywhere other than your hand, you deal a damage to each opponent. In a list that cares about such things, or ones that care about dealing direct damage, like <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Ob Nixilis, Captive Kingpin" href="#" target="_blank">Ob Nixilis, Captive Kingpin</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, it winds up being a <em>superior</em> addition to your deck.</p>
<h2>Spider-Verse</h2>

<p>The first line/paragraph of text on <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Spider-Verse" href="#" target="_blank">Spider-Verse</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> is really only relevant to folks with Spider-People decks, or the couple of holdout <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Thantis, the Warweaver" href="#" target="_blank">Thantis, the Warweaver</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> Spider kindred pilots out there.</p>
<p>The second paragraph, however, is where the <em>Magic</em> (pun intended) happens, copying the first spell you cast from anywhere other than your hand each turn, and if that spell is a permanent spell it gains haste.</p>
<p>Commanders like <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Prosper, Tome-Bound" href="#" target="_blank">Prosper, Tome-Bound</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> and <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Inti, Seneschal of the Sun" href="#" target="_blank">Inti, Seneschal of the Sun</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> have a baked-in card advantage engine that exiles a card that would really make this enchantment shine, as with Shadow of the Goblin, but a lot of mono-red and Boros decks rely so heavily on impulse draw that Spider-Verse will generate a <em>spectacular</em> amount of value regardless.</p>
<h2>Web of Life and Destiny</h2>

<p>The convoke option on <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Web of Life and Destiny" href="#" target="_blank">Web of Life and Destiny</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> makes the eight mana casting cost a lot more palatable, especially in green, the color of creatures. It's not like green struggles to produce mana, but anything to help get it onto the field faster helps a lot.</p>
<p>As mentioned earlier in talking about Parker Luck, one of the issues with <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Phyrexian Arena" href="#" target="_blank">Phyrexian Arena</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> in today's faster paced Commander environment is that you don't get your first draw for a full turn. Web of Life and Destiny triggers on your combat step, meaning as long as you cast it during your first main phase you can get a trigger the turn you cast it, which makes it feel way safer to use.</p>
<p>You'll still need a creature density in excess of twenty to consistently get a hit per trigger, but, again, green is the color of creatures, and most decks should just accidentally hit this threshold.</p>
<p>The downside here is the fact that decks filled with Hydras or other bodies with X in the casting cost, or other alternative costs, might not want something that stymies their ability to cast those spells in a way that doesn't make them come in and immediately die.</p>
<p>Still, that's a narrow slice of decks; almost any other creature-heavy green deck might really like what this enchantment adds to their deck's winding Web.</p>
<h2>With Great Power...</h2>

<p>Four mana for an Aura with the words "enchanted creature gets +2/+2 for each Aura and Equipment attached to it" is a good enough rate by itself. <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="With Great Power..." href="#" target="_blank">With Great Power...</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> doesn't need to say anything else to justify the cost, as that's enough to just one-shot most opponents in any well-built Aura and Equipment deck.</p>
<p>But those aren't the only words on this <em>astonishing</em> card, because why not add most of <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Ancestral Mask" href="#" target="_blank">Ancestral Mask</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> to <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Pariah" href="#" target="_blank">Pariah</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>?</p>

<p>Yes, in addition to heavily buffing whatever it has enchanted, all damage dealt to you is dealt to enchanted creature instead.</p>
<p>Now, will this occasionally be a downside, allowing an opponent to kill the enchanted creature via a combat swing? I mean, I guess. The other 99% of the time the enchanted creature will either be too large, have protection from a Sword of Spider and Man, or be indestructible, so it won't matter.</p>
<p>If you're playing a heavy Aura deck, the only reason not to run this is because you're bad at math.</p>
<h2>The Clone Saga</h2>

<p>The first chapter of <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="The Clone Saga" href="#" target="_blank">The Clone Saga</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> surveils 3, something that's always useful. But the real payoff comes on chapter two, when you get to copy the next creature spell you cast this turn except, the token isn't legendary.</p>
<p>You do have to wait until the second chapter, but this lets you cast The Clone Saga underneath a commander, dropping it the turn before and then having the copy trigger available the next turn when you cast whatever's in your zone.</p>
<p>The third chapter has you choose a card name, and lets you draw a card whenever a creature with that name deals combat damage to a player this turn, meaning you can probably draw up to two cards when the copied creature and the original both deal damage.</p>
<p>There are some odd edge cases here, where that third chapter is extra strong in a deck running something like <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Rat Colony" href="#" target="_blank">Rat Colony</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> that may well have a lot more than two copies in play, but by and large this is another way to keep a copy of a legendary creature and get 1-2 card draw triggers the following turn. All of which seems reasonably priced at four mana, especially given how impactful most legendary creatures are in modern design.</p>
<h2>Enchanted to Meet You, Spider-Man</h2>
