<p>With a full reveal of <em>Marvel's Spider-Man</em> set, we now have a five-color Spider-Man that is perfect to helm every Spider-Man in one deck with <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Cosmic Spider-Man" href="#" target="_blank">Cosmic Spider-Man</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>.</p>

<p>An all-powerful Spider-Man with the ability to grant five keywords to each other Spider that you control. A huge anthem effect in the command zone. But just because we could throw all Spider-Men into one deck, should we?</p>
<h2>The All-Powerful Cosmic Spider-Man</h2>
<p>For five mana, <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Cosmic Spider-Man" href="#" target="_blank">Cosmic Spider-Man</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> is a 5/5 with five keyword abilities, seemingly one from each color. His ability to give other Spiders those same keywords can be a finisher with the right setup. Granting Spiders flying and trample guarantees that any Spider can get through blockers. First strike makes blocking out Spiders difficult for our opponents if they don't want to lose blockers.</p>
<p>Haste ensures we come down fast with all our Spider-Men. And lifelink may seem like an added bonus, but with just one swing, our life total will be far out of reach for any remaining opponents.</p>
<p>Different paths to build Cosmic Spider-Man may include <a href="https://edhrec.com/tags/spiders" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Spider typal</a>, which can include every Spider worth running. Or we can go down the changeling path, with Cosmic Spider-Man as our finisher.</p>
<p>One thing to consider is that there's not much to go off of with just an anthem effect. It's a good finisher, but what synergies are we building? What's going to make the deck tick? I knew I wanted to make a Spider-Man-themed deck, but what's going to be the core of this deck?</p>
<p>For that, we'll need to look at the 99 to figure that out.</p>
<h2>Key Cards for <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Cosmic Spider-Man" href="#" target="_blank">Cosmic Spider-Man</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span></h2>
<h3>+1/+1 Counters</h3>
<div class="edhrecp__cards"><div class="edhrecp__card-container" name="Miles Morales"></div><div class="edhrecp__card-container" name="Araña, Heart of the Spider"></div><div class="edhrecp__card-container" name="SP//dr, Piloted by Peni"></div></div>
<p>+1/+1 Counters appears to be a running theme among many of these Spider-Men, with some granting counters or having payoffs for modified creatures. This was a strong enough thread that I realized a +1/+1 counter deck would be a good way to showcase all of these Spider-Men in a single deck.</p>
<p><span class="edhrecp__link side-by-side"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Miles Morales" href="#" target="_blank">Miles Morales</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> distributes two +1/+1 counters to two creatures when he enters. On the back side, Ultimate Spider-Man doubles the number of counters on each Spider and legendary creatures we control, which has the potential to pump up our creatures enough to close out games.</p>
<p><span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Araña, Heart of the Spider" href="#" target="_blank">Araña, Heart of the Spider</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> gives a counter to a target attacking creature. And <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="SP//dr, Piloted by Peni" href="#" target="_blank">SP//dr, Piloted by Peni</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> also gives a counter on ETB. The latter two both provide card advantage for modified creatures dealing combat damage. Having a commander that grants evasion to our creatures really comes in clutch with either one of these on the board.</p>

<p>The non-Spider-Man cards provide further support for this strategy by adding more +1/+1 counters to our creatures. <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Aunt May" href="#" target="_blank">Aunt May</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> may seem innocent, but having a turn one play that adds counters to every Spider that enters is perfect for enabling any payoffs that require a creature to be modified.</p>
<p><span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Lyla, Holographic Assistant" href="#" target="_blank">Lyla, Holographic Assistant</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> is a bit high-costed, but she gives out counters with each draw, and she gets better with draw spells like <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Sensational Spider-Man" href="#" target="_blank">Sensational Spider-Man</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>. Passive effects like Lyla will carry more weight than you'd think, since we need multiple ways to give counters to our creatures. Other Spider-Men only give out counters on ETB, so having a repeatable way to do so will go a long way.</p>
<p><span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Costume Closet" href="#" target="_blank">Costume Closet</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> lets us move counters onto our creatures while also generating more counters when we web-sling a modified creature or face a board wipe. Being able to stack counters on the Costume Closet after a board wipe is nice insurance for when we need to rebuild.</p>
<div class="edhrecp__cards"><div class="edhrecp__card-container" name="Communal Brewing"></div><div class="edhrecp__card-container" name="Metallic Mimic"></div><div class="edhrecp__card-container" name="Roaring Earth"></div></div>
<p>To beef up the counters theme, I added stronger, albeit less thematic, counter enablers.<span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Communal Brewing" href="#" target="_blank">Communal Brewing</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> can add up to three counters to each creature that we cast. Giving our opponents each a card is hardly a downside compared to how big our board will be. Cosmic Spider-Man coming in as an 8/8 with flying and haste is just terrifying.</p>
<p><span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Metallic Mimic" href="#" target="_blank">Metallic Mimic</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> that helps round out both our counter theme and Spider theme. Similar to Aunt May, our Spiders will enter with an additional +1/+1 counter on it for the low cost of two mana.</p>
<p><span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Roaring Earth" href="#" target="_blank">Roaring Earth</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> turns each of our land drops into an opportunity to put counters on any of our Spiders. And it works well with our suite of fetchlands. I chose Roaring Earth over <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Bristly Bill, Spine Sower" href="#" target="_blank">Bristly Bill, Spine Sower</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, because I believe Roaring Earth will go unchecked in most games, whereas Bristly Bill will definitely eat removal or be caught in a board wipe.</p>
<p>Having this effect on an enchantment ensures that we always have a way to boost our team.</p>

<h3>Other Spiders</h3>
<p>Moving on to some <a href="https://edhrec.com/articles/the-top-10-non-marvel-spiders-in-magic-the-gathering" target="_blank" rel="noopener">non-Spider-Man Spiders</a>, among the most notable Spider producers is <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Arasta of the Endless Web" href="#" target="_blank">Arasta of the Endless Web</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>. The more our opponents cast instant or sorceries, the more we can flood the board with little creepy crawlers.</p>
<p>I've also included <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Arachnogenesis" href="#" target="_blank">Arachnogenesis</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, a <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Fog" href="#" target="_blank">Fog</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> and a potential win-con in one card, if we make enough Spiders. Great on its own, but this, in combination with any of our permanents that care about Spiders entering, like <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Kindred Discovery" href="#" target="_blank">Kindred Discovery</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, will make a crazy comeback.</p>
<p>Similar to <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Metallic Mimic" href="#" target="_blank">Metallic Mimic</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Twitching Doll" href="#" target="_blank">Twitching Doll</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> adds to our Spider theme and our counter theme by creating a Spider token for each counter on it, including our +1/+1 counters.</p>
<p><span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Rotwidow Pack" href="#" target="_blank">Rotwidow Pack</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> makes Spider tokens in addition to being graveyard hate, but the real tech is using it to drain out our opponents by having a large board of Spiders. It's an expensive activation cost, but well worth it, especially since it's repeatable.</p>

<p>The web-slinging mechanic appears on many of our Spider-Men. <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Spider-Man, Brooklyn Visionary" href="#" target="_blank">Spider-Man, Brooklyn Visionary</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> and <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Spider-Sense" href="#" target="_blank">Spider-Sense</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> are both flavorful inclusions that add to necessary parts of our deck, while <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Scarlet Spider, Ben Reilly" href="#" target="_blank">Scarlet Spider, Ben Reilly</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> can be a large beater when he comes down.</p>
<p>At first, I only thought that this mechanic would offer incidental value by making our Spider-Men cheaper to cast, but there are a handful of value pieces we can trigger when we play a Spider-Man.</p>

<p><span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Mary Jane Watson" href="#" target="_blank">Mary Jane Watson</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> draws a card each turn a Spider enters the battlefield. She has great synergies with <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Arasta of the Endless Web" href="#" target="_blank">Arasta of the Endless Web</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, possibly drawing us up to four cards a turn cycle. <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Spider-UK" href="#" target="_blank">Spider-UK</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> draws a card so long as two or more creatures entered the battlefield under our control, which is feasible when we can cast the creature we web-slinged back.</p>
<p>And of course <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Kindred Discovery" href="#" target="_blank">Kindred Discovery</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> turns up this deck's power level and ensures our hand will always be full of Spiders.</p>
<h2>How Does <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Cosmic Spider-Man" href="#" target="_blank">Cosmic Spider-Man</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> Win?</h2>
<p>We'll wrap up this list with how we plan to close out games. <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Patriarch&#039;s Bidding" href="#" target="_blank">Patriarch&#039;s Bidding</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> gives everyone the chance to bring back the creature type of their choice. Usually, this means amassing a board of creatures with the same type, but with Cosmic Spider-Man, this will almost always be enough to close out games.</p>

<p>Of the few changelings that made it into this deck, <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Mirror Entity" href="#" target="_blank">Mirror Entity</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> is by far the most potent. With a little mana investment, we have a repeatable way to make each of our Spiders huge. This, combined with our commander, makes it easy to fly over our opponents for the win.</p>
<p>Finally, we have <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Uncivil Unrest" href="#" target="_blank">Uncivil Unrest</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, which is another way to give counters to our creatures, but also a way to deal double damage with our Spiders. In combination with our commander's evasive anthems, we have a clear line to victory.</p>

Cosmic Spider-Man Commander Deck Tech

<p>Released in February of 2002, the second set of <em>Odyssey</em> block, <a href="https://edhrec.com/sets/tor" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><em>Torment</em></a>, is one of <em>Magic</em>'s strangest expansions. Its unique selling point is that it's deeply asymmetric. Most sets contain, roughly, the same number of cards of each color. <em>Torment</em>, in contrast, is weighted heavily towards black. There are 40 black cards in the set, while the other colors have between 21 and 28 cards.</p>
<p>This was corrected in <a href="https://edhrec.com/sets/jud" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><em>Judgment</em></a>, the following set, which dialed the number of black cards down and ramped up the number of cards of other colors.</p>
<p>The lasting legacy of <em>Torment</em> doesn't come from its experiments with the color pie, though. What makes <em>Torment</em> memorable is that it gave us one of the game's most devilish mechanics: madness.</p>
<p>Madness cards that would be discarded can instead be cast for an alternative, often cheaper, madness cost. The mechanic is powerful, especially by the standards of 2002 when it debuted. After <em>Torment,</em> it returned again several times; appearing in <a href="https://edhrec.com/sets/tsp" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><em>Time Spiral </em></a>in 2006, <a href="https://edhrec.com/sets/soi" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><em>Shadows Over Innistrad</em></a> in 2016, and <a href="https://edhrec.com/sets/mh2" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><em>Modern Horizons 2</em></a> in 2021. The mechanic was even the central focus of 2019's <a href="https://edhrec.com/precon/merciless-rage" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><em>Merciless Rage</em> precon</a>.</p>
<p>The upcoming <a href="https://edhrec.com/sets/spm" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><em>Spider-Man</em></a> set features a new take on madness called mayhem, which aims to "fix" madness. <em>Wizards of the Coast</em> has a mixed record when it comes to "fixing" mechanics. There are success stories: Devotion provides a very evocative means of caring about the pips in the casting cost of your cards, and few remember chroma, the previous pip counting ability word that it supplanted.</p>
<p>Then again, daybound and nightbound add awkward admin to Werewolf transformations, and replace a previous system that was essentially fine.</p>
<p>Will Mayhem be a success story that reigns madness in, or is it doomed to cause as much chaos as its name implies? Let's discuss.</p>
<h2>Madness and Mayhem</h2>

<p>Before we can explore the differences between madness and mayhem, it's important to first talk through how the mechanics operate. When a card with madness would be discarded, it's instead sent into exile. From exile it can then be cast by paying its madness cost. If the madness is cost is paid then the card resolves. If the cost is not paid then the card is discarded as normal and goes to the graveyard.</p>
<p>A card with mayhem, meanwhile, simply goes to the graveyard when it's discarded. It does not go into exile. Then, during the turn on which it was discarded, it can be played from the graveyard by paying its mayhem cost.</p>
<p>These two abilities may sound remarkably similar, but there are some key differences.</p>
<p>First of all, a card with madness must be cast immediately. Failing to do so means the opportunity to use it is lost, and the card enters the graveyard. In contrast, a card with mayhem can still be cast for the rest of the turn on which it was discarded. It's possible to discard a card with mayhem during your upkeep, and then cast it during your second main phase without incident.</p>
<p>The most significant difference between the two mechanics is that cards with madness may be cast outside of their typical timing restrictions. <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Alchemist&#039;s Greeting" href="#" target="_blank">Alchemist&#039;s Greeting</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> is a sorcery with madness that deals four damage to a creature when it's cast. If Alchemist's Greeting is discarded outside of the main phase, or even during an opponent's turn, then it can still be cast and used to damage a creature.</p>
<p>Similarly, the creature <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Reckless Wurm" href="#" target="_blank">Reckless Wurm</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> has madness. Even though it doesn't have flash, you're still able to cast it for its madness cost whenever it gets discarded.</p>
<p>Unlike madness, mayhem follows timing restrictions. If you discard the card <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Electro&#039;s Bolt" href="#" target="_blank">Electro&#039;s Bolt</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, another spell that deals four damage to a creature, you'll only be able to cast it during either of your main phases on the turn when you threw it away. Similarly, <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Spider-Islanders" href="#" target="_blank">Spider-Islanders</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> can only be brought into play during one of your main phases on the turn when it was discarded.</p>
<p>Now that the differences between the two mechanics are clear, lets take a look at the pros and cons of turning madness into mayhem.</p>
<h2>The Upsides</h2>

<h3>Lower Complexity</h3>
<p>On the whole, since madness was first printed in 2002, <em>Magic </em>has become a significantly more complex game. Universes Beyond sets like <em>Spider-Man </em>are designed as an exception to this pattern, since they aim to draw in new audiences. Because of this, their mechanics tend to be very streamlined and clear.</p>
<p>All of this means that mayhem is a far simpler mechanic to parse than madness. Mayhem cards never enter exile, and the timing window for casting them is far more forgiving, so there's no risk of missing the trigger to cast them. Mayhem is just a very clean mechanic.</p>
<h3>Better Play Patterns</h3>
<p>Mayhem's simplicity makes it more difficult to exploit than madness. Many decks that run a large number of instant-speed cards incentivize gameplay where their controller needs to do very little during their own turn. They can pass, and then combo off when another player attempts to attack them. If no attack is forthcoming, then they can slam out their cards during the end step of the player whose turn comes directly before theirs.</p>
<p>Every way of playing <em>Magic</em> is legitimate (yes, even running mass land destruction), but instant-speed combo decks can create play patterns that won't be fun for everyone at the table. Going up against this sort of deck may confuse new players, who would mistakenly view their opponent as being an open target, rather than lying in wait to ambush them.</p>
<p>All of the hidden information may even frustrate more experienced players.</p>
<h3>New Design Space</h3>
<p>Mayhem also cracks open new design space. <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Oscorp Industries" href="#" target="_blank">Oscorp Industries</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> is a land with mayhem, and that's honestly pretty exciting. It would be impossible to print a land with madness, since madness cards are <em>cast</em> from exile, and lands are <em>played</em> rather than cast. While <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Oscorp Industries" href="#" target="_blank">Oscorp Industries</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> is a tap land with a low power level, it opens the door to some interesting new possibilities.</p>
<p>Now that we've talked about the good, let's take a look at the bad...</p>
<h2>The Downsides</h2>

<h3>Lower Power Level</h3>
<p>From a pure strength perspective, mayhem is simply weaker than madness. Power level doesn't necessarily equal fun; just look at <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Nadu, Winged Wisdom" href="#" target="_blank">Nadu, Winged Wisdom</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> and how it completely kneecapped the pace of both Modern and Commander while it was legal. All the same, madness cards can simply accomplish more than mayhem cards.</p>
<p>As discussed, the increased strength of madness does come with a commensurate increase in complexity, but it lets you pull things off that just wouldn't be possible using mayhem.</p>
<p>Discarding your <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Voldaren Pariah" href="#" target="_blank">Voldaren Pariah</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> at instant speed during an opponent's combat step, and then transforming it, completely changes the entire board state and can make an opponent majorly regret an attack they've just launched, forcing them to recalculate their strategy.</p>
<h3>Non-Synergies</h3>
<p>Because of mayhem's new name, it can't be used alongside prior cards that directly synergize with the madness mechanic. There's currently only one card in the game that directly names madness, but it's a very popular commander: <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Anje Falkenrath" href="#" target="_blank">Anje Falkenrath</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>.</p>
<p>Anje won't untap if she discards <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Sandman&#039;s Quicksand" href="#" target="_blank">Sandman&#039;s Quicksand</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, and she doesn't care about <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Carnage, Crimson Chaos" href="#" target="_blank">Carnage</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>. Anje may only be one commander, but she is by far <a href="https://edhrec.com/tags/madness" target="_blank" rel="noopener">the most popular Madness commander of all time</a>. Self-discard decks now have a whole host of new tools that she's unable to experiment with.</p>
<h3>Universes Beyond Exclusivity</h3>
<p>Finally, mayhem is, currently, only available attached to Spider-Man characters. While there are Universes Within versions of these cards, they are, for the moment, only available digitally. This means that anyone wanting to play around with mayhem will need to fill their deck with Spider-Man characters. For some players, this won't matter at all, but for others this will be a complete deal breaker.</p>
<p>Everyone has a different perspective on Universes Beyond. Unfortunately, there are bound to be some discard lovers out there that just don't want to sleeve <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Ultimate Green Goblin" href="#" target="_blank">Ultimate Green Goblin</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> up alongside their <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Shadowgrange Archfiend" href="#" target="_blank">Shadowgrange Archfiend</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span></p>
<h2>Conclusion on Madness and Mayhem</h2>
<p>Mayhem is a lot simpler than madness. With the exception of <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Swarm, Being of Bees" href="#" target="_blank">Swarm, Being of Bees</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, every mayhem card can only be played at sorcery speed. This makes the mechanic easier to understand and less unpredictable to play against. Mayhem can also appear on lands, which just isn't possible for madness.</p>
<p>Of the two mechanics, madness is definitely more chaotic. In a way, maybe that's a flavor win. Madness, true to its name, is turbulent and unpredictable. An opponent attacking you has no way of anticipating that you may use the discard effect on your <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Olivia&#039;s Dragoon" href="#" target="_blank">Olivia&#039;s Dragoon</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> to rush a <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Reckless Wurm" href="#" target="_blank">Reckless Wurm</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> into play.</p>
<p>Mayhem is also, at least for now, locked into Universes Beyond, rendering it beyond the reach of players looking to remain rooted in the <em>MTG </em>multiverse.</p>
<p>Mayhem may ultimately end up replacing madness, since there's little point in the two mechanics co-existing together. As time goes on, this would resolve some of the issues with mayhem. More creatures with flash and instants with mayhem could be printed, giving it more nuance and tactical depth. Similarly, the Universes Within versions of the <em>Spider-Man</em> cards may receive a physical printing in future, alongside new mayhem cards on familiar magic planes.</p>
<p>In other words, if mayhem replaces madness, it will gradually become a more closely integrated part of the game. This will resolve many of the problems flagged up here, with one lone exception.</p>
<p>Unfortunately, <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Anje Falkenrath" href="#" target="_blank">Anje Falkenrath</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> will become a commander dedicated to a mothballed mechanic. The game's most popular madness commander may end up swept into the dustbin of history, alongside the mechanic itself.</p>

<p>Spider-Man isn't a franchise I ever would've expected <em>Magic: the Gathering</em> to do a crossover with. And, while I'm trying to maintain my typical skepticism of these Universes Beyond sets, this one is definitely cracking my resolve. I'm champing at the bit to find out how the <em>Magic</em> design team has chosen to tackle the Spider-Man cannon and to see how deep into the lore they're going to take us.</p>

<p>The first wave of previews left me feeling a little underwhelmed, but there is one standout card from the bunch I'm excited to take a look at in this deck tech: <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Venom, Deadly Devourer" href="#" target="_blank">Venom, Deadly Devourer</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>.</p>
<h2>What Does Venom, Deadly Devourer Do?</h2>
<p><span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Venom, Deadly Devourer" href="#" target="_blank">Venom, Deadly Devourer</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> is, put simply, a really buff <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Scavenging Ooze" href="#" target="_blank">Scavenging Ooze</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>. Venom is a four mana 4/4 with vigilance, menace, and a very versatile activated ability: For three mana, Venom can exile a creature from any graveyard and put a number +1/+1 counters equal to the exiled creature's toughness on himself.</p>
<div class="edhrecp__cards"><div class="edhrecp__card-container" name="Scavenging Ooze"></div></div>
<p>Most importantly, this ability can be activated at instant speed, meaning opponents often won't know how much damage they're on the hook for when deciding whether or not they want to block Venom.</p>
<p>This deck will fall somewhere under the Voltron umbrella, using +1/+1 counters rather than Auras or Equipment to deal lethal commander damage. My goal for this deck is to use Venom as the ambush predator that he is.</p>
<p>The primary play pattern will be swinging with Venom while holding up a bunch of open mana, letting opponents make their blocking decisions, then tossing a creature into exile at instant speed, eating it with Venom and either tearing through the creatures that blocked him or dealing lethal commander damage if an opponent ever makes the mistake of leaving Venom unblocked.</p>
<h2>Key Cards for Venom, Deadly Devourer</h2>
<p>In order for Venom to really do anything, he needs creatures in the graveyard to eat! Thankfully, there are a lot of ways to do that while keeping opponents in the dark until it's too late.</p>

<p><span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Entomb" href="#" target="_blank">Entomb</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> is the signature card of graveyard strategies like this. For only one mana, it sends any card straight from the library to the graveyard at instant speed. <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Survival of the Fittest" href="#" target="_blank">Survival of the Fittest</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> serves the same function, alongside its cousin <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Fauna Shaman" href="#" target="_blank">Fauna Shaman</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, while also serving as a discard outlet to dispose of large creatures that get stuck in the hand.</p>
<p><span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Bitter Triumph" href="#" target="_blank">Bitter Triumph</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> is often a two-for-one deal, destroying an opposing creature and discarding one from the hand, giving Venom two creatures to exile for just two mana.</p>
<div class="edhrecp__cards"><div class="edhrecp__card-container" name="Bristly Bill, Spine Sower"></div><div class="edhrecp__card-container" name="Branching Evolution"></div><div class="edhrecp__card-container" name="Ouroboroid"></div></div>
<p>Unfortunately, Venom won't get enough +1/+1 counters to one-shot an unsuspecting opponent in just one activation without a little help. Even exiling a creature as large as <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Impervious Greatwurm" href="#" target="_blank">Impervious Greatwurm</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> is just shy of allowing Venom to deal the necessary 21 points of commander damage.</p>
<p>To get the rest of the way there, Venom will need a little help from cards that can double the counters on him. I love <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Bristly Bill, Spine Sower" href="#" target="_blank">Bristly Bill, Spine Sower</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> as yet another instant speed activated ability that can be held over the defending player's head during combat.</p>
<p>Alongside the instant speed methods of sending creatures to the graveyard, I've included some self-mill and recursion engines to provide the deck with some much needed card velocity.</p>

<p><span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Six" href="#" target="_blank">Six</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> and <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Life from the Loam" href="#" target="_blank">Life from the Loam</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> work together to create an engine that I severely underestimated until I got to play with it. <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Life from the Loam" href="#" target="_blank">Life from the Loam</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> picks up lands to discard as part of the retrace cost to cast permanents from the graveyard with <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Six" href="#" target="_blank">Six</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>'s ability and fills the graveyard as it gets dredged back each draw step.</p>
<p>I've included some permanents to bolster this synergy, like <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Seal of Primordium" href="#" target="_blank">Seal of Primordium</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> and <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Haywire Mite" href="#" target="_blank">Haywire Mite</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> instead of more conventional artifact and enchantment removal. <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Life from the Loam" href="#" target="_blank">Life from the Loam</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> is also fantastic on its own as a way to recur lands, like <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Strip Mine" href="#" target="_blank">Strip Mine</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Boseiju, Who Endures" href="#" target="_blank">Boseiju, Who Endures</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, and <a href="https://edhrec.com/lands/golgari#fetchlands" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Fetchlands</a>.</p>
<h2>How Does this Venom, Deadly Devourer Deck Win?</h2>
<p>This deck wins like any other Voltron deck: <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Venom, Deadly Devourer" href="#" target="_blank">Venom, Deadly Devourer</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> will get into the red zone and kill all three opponents all by himself.</p>
<div class="edhrecp__cards"><div class="edhrecp__card-container" name="Tainted Strike"></div></div>
<p><span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Tainted Strike" href="#" target="_blank">Tainted Strike</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> can speed up this process, drastically reducing the amount of +1/+1 counters Venom will need to one-shot at least one opponent. Often, this card comes in handy in the longer games where Venom dies a couple of times and the deck's resources are being stretched thin to string together one last combat step to end the game.</p>

<p>I've included one alternative to the normal combat damage plan. <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Jarad, Golgari Lich Lord" href="#" target="_blank">Jarad, Golgari Lich Lord</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> can sacrifice a large <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Venom, Deadly Devourer" href="#" target="_blank">Venom, Deadly Devourer</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> and burn the whole table out. Venom isn't even the only reasonable creature that can be used to burn out the table in this way. <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Lord of Extinction" href="#" target="_blank">Lord of Extinction</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> will often be more than large enough in the later stages of the game. Even better, Jarad recurs himself and provides a very enticing <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Reanimate" href="#" target="_blank">Reanimate</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> target.</p>
<p>Executing this plan is more high-investment than simply attacking with Venom, but the resources that go into it are very much worth the reward.</p>
<div class="edhrecp__cards"><div class="edhrecp__card-container" name="Rest in Peace"></div><div class="edhrecp__card-container" name="Bojuka Bog"></div><div class="edhrecp__card-container" name="Wheel of Sun and Moon"></div></div>
<p>The biggest barrier to winning the game with <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Venom, Deadly Devourer" href="#" target="_blank">Venom, Deadly Devourer</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> is opposing graveyard hate. Cards like <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Rest in Peace" href="#" target="_blank">Rest in Peace</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> render the game entirely unplayable for this otherwise unstoppable Symbiote.</p>
<p>I've tried to protect against this with a lot of generic non-land permanent removal. However, a well timed piece of graveyard hate can still render this deck inert despite Venom's best efforts to subvert it. I think it can be fun for decks to have fatal flaws like this, and I find it very funny that <em>Magic</em>'s version of Venom is more vulnerable to <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Bojuka Bog" href="#" target="_blank">Bojuka Bog</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> than he is church bells or fire.</p>

<p>This build of Venom should easily fit into Bracket 3 (Upgraded) tables. The slightly high count of tutors, particularly <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Survival of the Fittest" href="#" target="_blank">Survival of the Fittest</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, and the "ambush predator" strategy are definitely worth bringing up in pre-game discussions to prevent opponents from feeling completely blindsided by a 36/36 Venom killing them on turn five, however.</p>
<p>I'd recommend this deck to players that enjoy commander damage strategies, graveyard decks, or fellow Spider-Man fans that just appreciate the flavor of <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Venom, Deadly Devourer" href="#" target="_blank">Venom, Deadly Devourer</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> and the strategies he lends himself to. I definitely fall into all three categories.</p>
<p>The only con of this deck I anticipate is that the strategy is very streamlined. The games this deck wins will all look very similar to one another and the games the deck loses likely will as well. This might limit replayability a good bit. But for all I know there will be cards in <em>Marvel's Spider-Man</em> that have yet to be revealed that could add some more mechanical depth to Venom's strategy.</p>
<p>I'm a little sad that there won't be Commander precon decks for <em>Marvel's Spider-Man</em>, as when the set was originally announced I was really hoping for a precon with either Eddie Brock and Venom or Cletus Kasady and Carnage as partner commanders. I'm holding onto some hope that those characters might get printed on dual faced cards that transform like the <em>Innistrad</em> werewolves.</p>
<p>But in the unlikely event that <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Venom, Deadly Devourer" href="#" target="_blank">Venom, Deadly Devourer</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> is the only Symbiote that gets printed, it's cool enough on its own that I could live with that.</p>
