The 10 Most Played Marvel Super Heroes Commander Cards

Hey, everyone! After last week's trip down memory lane through Dominaria United, today I'm bringing you the top 10 most played Commander cards from Marvel Super Heroes (MSH). The set's only been out a month, so the play rates are going to be pretty low, but who wouldn't be excited to see which cards from Universes Beyond's latest offering have captured the hearts of Commander gamers? Let's dive right in!

10. Avengers TowerAvengers Tower - 10,448 decks

Avengers Tower

I couldn't think of a more perfect place to start, for multiple reasons: Tower is a flavor win, showcasing one of Marvel's most iconic locations, it shouts out one of the set's main mechanics (Heroes matter) and it's an uncommon five-color utility land, to boot! This is absolutely going to see more play as time passes and as more Marvel sets get printed. The rumor mill seems to think that we're getting around six sets total, partly due to how many Infinity Stones there are. We already saw The Soul StoneThe Soul Stone in Marvel's Spider-Man.

The Soul Stone

While I'm not going to speculate on that, I will say that I'm glad that Tower's rarity means that any deckbuilder who wants to get their hands on this to fix their Hero deck mana should be able to.

9. Shang-Chi, Master of Kung FuShang-Chi, Master of Kung Fu - 10,844 decks

Shang-Chi, Master of Kung Fu

Hey, it's a two-mana Tyvar, Jubilant BrawlerTyvar, Jubilant Brawler! This works interchangeably with Concordant CrossroadsConcordant Crossroads and Tyvar to get you infinite mana and tokens in mono-green:

That makes Shang-Chi a pretty common inclusion in The Unbeatable Squirrel GirlThe Unbeatable Squirrel Girl, but he's also made his way into nearly half of Sisay, Weatherlight CaptainSisay, Weatherlight Captain decks since being printed, which makes a ton of sense. A lot of legends have excellent abilities that benefit from being activated right away or from the two mana he generates: Kinnan, Bonder ProdigyKinnan, Bonder Prodigy and Selvala, Heart of the WildsSelvala, Heart of the Wilds included.

Sisay, Weatherlight Captain
Kinnan, Bonder Prodigy
Selvala, Heart of the Wilds

8. Shuri, Wakandan InventorShuri, Wakandan Inventor - 11,821 decks

Shuri, Wakandan Inventor

It's so interesting to see how Marvel characters translate into Magic: The Gathering cards. It absolutely makes sense that Shuri would be a souped-up Etherium SculptorEtherium Sculptor/Saheeli, Sublime ArtificerSaheeli, Sublime Artificer hybrid, given her penchant for swiftly producing a vast array of Wakandan technical marvels. Of course, Sculptor and fellow analog Foundry InspectorFoundry Inspector are both artifacts themselves, meaning Shuri is not necessarily a replacement but an augmenter of these artifact-deck staples.

Etherium Sculptor
Saheeli, Sublime Artificer
Foundry Inspector

Which artifact decks are these? Well, mana generation is a broken mechanic, so she's being slotted in decks ranging from Shorikai, Genesis EngineShorikai, Genesis Engine and Vehicles to more counter-focused Kilo, Apogee MindKilo, Apogee Mind decks. She has a high ceiling for sure, considering that Sculptor is in almost 300,000 decks.

7. Captain America's ShieldCaptain America's Shield - 13,066 decks

Captain America's Shield

I tend to talk more about play rate than flavor in this column, but I can't help but gush about how much this game piece feels like the fantasy object it's representing. I can just imagine Cap throwing his shield at a group of goons before entering the fray, causing them to scatter so he can deal with them one by one in hand-to-hand combat.

Mechanically, it fits right into toughness-matters decks like Felothar the SteadfastFelothar the Steadfast, Betor, Kin to AllBetor, Kin to All, and Doran, Besieged by TimeDoran, Besieged by Time, and you can even play it in Equipment decks like Cloud, Midgar MercenaryCloud, Midgar Mercenary, though I wouldn't call it more useful than a tool to achieve critical mass of the card type.

Felothar the Steadfast
Doran, Besieged by Time
Betor, Kin to All

6. Arc ReactorArc Reactor - 13,116 decks

Arc Reactor

A Thran DynamoThran Dynamo/Gilded LotusGilded Lotus mashup with improvise is a pretty marvelous addition to artifact and/or big-mana decks, though this entering tapped is a bit of a bummer, as it puts a cap on how explosive this can be.

Thran Dynamo
Gilded Lotus
Zhulodok, Void Gorger

It's not going to replace these two absolute legends in many decks, but it is a handy option in decks like Zhulodok, Void GorgerZhulodok, Void Gorger or Karn, Legacy ReforgedKarn, Legacy Reforged that want to play more copies of this type of effect.

5. Cosmic CubeCosmic Cube - 14,249 decks

Cosmic Cube

Is it pattern recognition when I look at this card and think, "oh cool, it's Aetherworks MarvelAetherworks Marvel but with a Winota, Joiner of ForcesWinota, Joiner of Forces trigger," or is it a damning indictment of the number of new cards getting printed every year? I'll leave that as an exercise to the reader, while pointing you to this incredibly useful guide on how to combo with the Cube by Alejandro Fuentes.

Aetherworks Marvel
Winota, Joiner of Forces

4. Ultron, Artificial MalevolenceUltron, Artificial Malevolence - 14,556 decks

Ultron, Artificial Malevolence

This is the type of effect that makes me head straight for the "Similar Cards" tab on EDHREC to see how much play cards like it see. MirrorworksMirrorworks, its closest cousin, is in only 51,000 decks, but it's more expensive and it isn't a creature, for what it's worth. Likewise, Replication SpecialistReplication Specialist also costs five and has barely cracked 7,000 decks.

Mirrorworks
Replication Specialist

What does that mean for this 2/4? Well, the age of Ultron is only a month, so he definitely has room to grow. Costing three is definitely a huge advantage over Mirrorworks. The fact that it's a creature could be a strike against it as it's easier to remove, but that also makes it better in decks like Urza, Chief ArtificerUrza, Chief Artificer. Ultimately, copying stuff is really powerful, and I'm excited to see his upside in Commander.

3. The Ten RingsThe Ten Rings - 16,585 decks

The Ten Rings

I'd venture to say that this is a far less iconic artifact lore-wise than both Arc Reactor and Captain America's Shield, but more players are putting a ring — or ten — in their decks. That's probably because this is one of the most potent card advantage sources in the game, even at eight mana. It's also way easier to cast than Jin-Gitaxias, Core AugurJin-Gitaxias, Core Augur and The Magic MirrorThe Magic Mirror.

Jin-Gitaxias, Core Augur
The Magic Mirror

It looks great in Zhulodok, Void GorgerZhulodok, Void Gorger, but it's also fantastic to cheat in with commanders like Kona, Rescue BeastieKona, Rescue Beastie or Tannuk, Steadfast SecondTannuk, Steadfast Second. It also can't be overlooked that this makes for a fun, if excessive, one-two punch with Shang-Chi and the Ten RingsShang-Chi and the Ten Rings. I'm sure you'll find something to do with all those cards.

2. The Mind StoneThe Mind Stone - 17,046 decks

The Mind Stone

Like The Soul StoneThe Soul Stone before it, The Mind Stone is a pushed artifact that comes down early and pays you off with mana until you can harness it and use it to accrue insurmountable value. Nicholas Lucchesi says it'll see more play than the Infinity Stone, which makes sense given just how many decks are built around blink strategies. Niko, Light of HopeNiko, Light of Hope, Brago, King EternalBrago, King Eternal, and Elesh Norn, Mother of MachinesElesh Norn, Mother of Machines are just three popular blink commanders, and getting an extra and arguably better copy of Conjurer's ClosetConjurer's Closet will only make this archetype more enticing.

Niko, Light of Hope
Brago, King Eternal
Elesh Norn, Mother of Machines

1. Mjölnir, Hammer of ThorMjölnir, Hammer of Thor - 18,403 decks

Mjölnir, Hammer of Thor

I personally find Thor's hammer cooler than Cap's Shield, though this artifact flavorfully lets every MTG incarnation of The First Avenger wears both.

Captain America, Team Leader
Captain America, Super-Soldier
Captain America, Living Legend

Restrictive equip cost aside, you don't even need a wielder for this to do some work, and it's either a slightly inefficient removal spell or a Kozilek's ReturnKozilek's Return. Of course, you're putting this in a deck full of red and/or white legends like Cloud, Ex-SOLDIERCloud, Ex-SOLDIER, and Lightning, Army of OneLightning, Army of One, so this is basically always going to live up to at least 90% of its potential. To get to 100%, you need a way to get this back from the graveyard, but that's what synergy and Thor, God of ThunderThor, God of Thunder are for!

Hello There. Expecting Something Else?Hello There. Expecting Something Else?

Marvel Super Heroes is barely a month old, so deckbuilders are undoubtedly still getting their hands on new cards and figuring out how to build around them. I think that partly explains why there are a lot of colorless cards on this list; you can play them in any deck, while cards like Arc Reactor are generically powerful anyway. What card do you think will find itself among the top 10 most played in a year's time? Let us know!
