Wombo Combo returns yet again, but this time with a special twist! To commemorate Commander Spellbook's massive milestone of housing more than 100,000 Magic combos, we are going to look at the top 10 combos currently used by Commander players, with EDHREC's help.
We'll detail what the combos are, how you can execute them, what you can use the combos for, and finally alternate solutions to each combo line as applicable. With over 100,000 options to choose from, here's the top 10 decided by players like you!
#10: Pitiless Plunderer + Reassembling Skeleton + Ashnod's Altar
How to Perform: Sacrifice Reassembling Skeleton to Ashnod's Altar, adding mana and creating a Treasure from Pitiless Plunderer's trigger. Sacrifice the Treasure for , and return Reassembling Skeleton to the battlefield using its ability.
How to Use this Combo: This combo is perfect to pair with Blood ArtistBlood Artist and similar effects, allowing you to end the game immediately. This combo also results in infinite mana, which can be pumped into Torment of HailfireTorment of Hailfire and similar game-ending spells.
Alternate Methods of Performing: Reassembling Skeleton can be replaced by Cult ConscriptCult Conscript and similar cards, while Ashnod's Altar can instead be Phyrexian AltarPhyrexian Altar.
#9: Chatterfang, Squirrel General + Pitiless Plunderer
How to Perform: Sacrifice a Squirrel and pay to Chatterfang, triggering Pitiless Plunderer to create a Treasure and Squirrel token after applying Chatterfang's replacement effect. Resolve the Chatterfang ability to give a creature +1/-1 until end of turn. If desired, sacrifice the Treasure for mana and repeat.
How to Use this Combo: This combo can be a lock, which can be used to remove any problematic creatures on the battlefield at instant speed. You can also add a payoff card like Mirkwood BatsMirkwood Bats to turn the loop into a true infinite combo.
Alternate Methods of Performing: While neither card here is readily replaceable, you can use a different sacrifice outlet (like Altar of DementiaAltar of Dementia) instead of Chatterfang to get different results and infinite Treasure tokens.
#8: Niv-Mizzet, Parun + Curiosity
How to Perform: Draw a card, triggering Niv-Mizzet to deal damage to an opponent. Curiosity then triggers, causing you to draw a card. This loop will repeat until your opponents are dead, or until you've run out of cards to draw.
How to Use this Combo: If the number of cards in your library is less than or equal to the combined life totals of your opponents, this combo will end the game immediately. You do need to remember, however, that this combo can cause you to lose the game if you draw from an empty library, so keeping a removal spell handy in your hand or library (think Cyclonic RiftCyclonic Rift, for example) would be wise.
Alternate Methods of Performing: Curiosity has some functional equivalents, including Ophidian EyeOphidian Eye and Keen SenseKeen Sense. Niv-Mizzet, Parun can be replaced by Niv-Mizzet, the FiremindNiv-Mizzet, the Firemind.
#7: Gravecrawler + Phyrexian Altar
How to Perform: Sacrifice Gravecrawler to Phyrexian Altar, adding . Cast Gravecrawler from your graveyard, and repeat the loop.
How to Use this Combo: The payoffs are very similar to the Pitiless Plunderer combos, using Blood Artist effects or Impact TremorsImpact Tremors-style cards for damage/life loss. Adding in NecrodualityNecroduality also gives you infinite creature tokens, which'll also result in infinite mana from Phyrexian Altar.
Alternate Methods of Performing: Phyrexian Altar can be replaced by Pitiless Plunderer and any other sacrifice outlet. Going a bit off-color, EarthcraftEarthcraft can also be used.
#6: Dualcaster Mage + Twinflame
How to Perform: Cast Twinflame targeting an applicable target, then cast Dualcaster Mage afterwards thanks to its flash ability. With Dualcaster Mage's enters-the-battlefield (ETB) ability, copy Twinflame, which will then create a copy of Dualcaster Mage, allowing you to repeat the loop.
How to Use this Combo: You'll natively get infinite creature tokens with haste, which can swing and deal infinite combat damage to each opponent. If you don't want to attack, perhaps because an opponent controls a Ghostly PrisonGhostly Prison, Goblin BombardmentGoblin Bombardment can get around it.
Alternate Methods of Performing: Twinflame can be replaced by similar copy spells, including Cackling CounterpartCackling Counterpart or QuasiduplicateQuasiduplicate. Depending on the spell used, you may not get creature tokens that have haste.
#5: Dramatic Reversal + Isochron Scepter
How to Perform: Tap any number of nonland permanents for mana, adding or more. Cast a copy of Dramatic Reversal using Isochron Scepter's ability, and resolve the copy to untap Isochron Scepter and the permanents that were tapped for mana.
How to Use this Combo: Any nonland permanent that can tap for a meaningful effect is perfect to add, ranging from ArchivistArchivist to Thermo-AlchemistThermo-Alchemist and everything in between. Magecraft cards also work great, such as Storm-Kiln ArtistStorm-Kiln Artist.
Alternate Methods of Performing: This is the most concise version of this combo, but you can use spells that untap creatures (like To Arms!To Arms!) if you animate Isochron Scepter and have creature mana sources.
#4: Underworld Breach + Lotus Petal + Brain Freeze
How to Perform: Sacrifice Lotus Petal for , and then cast it from your graveyard for its escape cost. Do that two total times, then cast Brain Freeze, copying it with its storm ability. Resolve all Brain Freezes, causing you to mill at least nine cards, and causing other player(s) to mill cards if other copies of Brain Freeze exist. Repeat until you run out of cards to exile in your graveyard.
How to Use this Combo: With Brain Freeze's scaling due to its storm ability, you can mill opponents for large amounts of cards, possibly leading to one or more of them losing when they draw from an empty library. You can also empty your library to go for a Jace, Wielder of MysteriesJace, Wielder of Mysteries win condition.
Alternate Methods of Performing: Lotus Petal can be replaced by Lion's Eye DiamondLion's Eye Diamond. Brain Freeze can be replaced by other spells to mill or discard cards, including WindfallWindfall and Wheel of FortuneWheel of Fortune.
#3: Exquisite Blood + Sanguine Bond
How to Perform: Gain life in any way, causing Sanguine Bond to trigger and cause an opponent to lose life. Afterwards, Exquisite Blood will trigger, causing you to gain life, thus triggering Sanguine Bond again.
How to Use this Combo: The whole point of this pairing is to end the game. If the game still continues somehow afterwards, you do need to worry about a draw due to mandatory game actions.
Alternate Methods of Performing: Sanguine Bond has several equivalents, including Vito, Thorn of the Dusk RoseVito, Thorn of the Dusk Rose and Enduring TenacityEnduring Tenacity. Exquisite Blood also has some alternate options, including Bloodthirsty ConquerorBloodthirsty Conqueror.
#2: Demonic Consultation + Thassa's Oracle
How to Perform: Cast Demonic Consultation, naming a card that's not in your library to exile your entire library. Afterwards, cast Thassa's Oracle and win the game with its ETB ability.
How to Use this Combo: Another combo that exists solely to win the game. Hey, at least you can have fun with it by naming extremely obscure cards each time, like Paliano VanguardPaliano Vanguard!
Alternate Methods of Performing: Thassa's Oracle can be replaced by Jace, Wielder of MysteriesJace, Wielder of Mysteries or Laboratory ManiacLaboratory Maniac, drawing cards to win the game instead. Demonic Consultation's replacements include Tainted PactTainted Pact or LevelerLeveler.
#1: Hullbreaker Horror + Sol Ring + Permanent Castable for One Colorless Mana
How to Perform: Tap Sol Ring for mana, then cast the other permanent, bouncing Sol Ring to your hand with Hullbreaker Horror's trigger. Cast Sol Ring, bouncing the other permanent with Hullbreaker Horror, and then repeat.
How to Use this Combo: Depending on the other permanent you choose, that permanent can give you notable results that act as payoffs. Codex ShredderCodex Shredder is a great example, allowing you to mill any number of players. The repeated entering of Sol Ring can also trigger cards like Mendicant Core, GuidelightMendicant Core, Guidelight.
Alternate Methods of Performing: Any permanent that's castable for can work, but if a permanent castable for is used, you'll net infinite colorless mana. Sol Ring can be replaced by other mana rocks, like Mana VaultMana Vault or Mox AmberMox Amber.
In Conclusion
With many options to choose from in Magic, it's clear that some cards and combos simply hit home with players far more than others — so much so that they end up in hundreds of thousands of decks.
