The marvelous combo-centric series Wombo Combo returns to provide you another list of Commander's best combo cards using EDHREC and Commander Spellbook data. This week, we'll turn the page into the ultimate world of heroes and villains by examining the new Marvel Super Heroes set.
Marvel is a staple in superhero comics, many of which are the work of comic legend Stan Lee. Marvel superheroes include household staples, including Captain America, the Hulk, Iron Man, and the Fantastic Four among many others. The Magic set features many of the most notable superheroes and villains, featuring over 600 new cards with a litany of new effects and redundancy for older cards. This list will give you the top 10 cards you can add for combos from Marvel Super Heroes, and make your opponents marvel at your success.
#10: Shang-Chi, Martial Mentor
Counter increasers are an integral part of many decks, and Shang-Chi, Martial MentorShang-Chi, Martial Mentor is the Marvel Superheroes version of an increaser, doubling the number of +1/+1 counters on creatures you control. The extra counters can easily boost creatures you control, expediting their growth for more combat damage. The counters can also have more utility, being removed by Sage of HoursSage of Hours for extra turns or Crystalline CrawlerCrystalline Crawler for colored mana. The increase of counters also lets Walking BallistaWalking Ballista become an even bigger threat, especially when paired with VigorVigor.
#9: Valeria Richards, Precocious
Valeria Richards has a complicated storyline in Marvel, but her Magic card is simple and powerful. Valeria draws you a card the first time you cast a noncreature spell, giving massive card advantage, especially for control decks that routinely cast spells during opponents' turns. Valeria also reduces noncreature spells by , making them easier to cast, or even free in some cases. A good example is Sensei's Divining TopSensei's Divining Top, which Valeria can help turn into an infinite draw engine.
#8: Mole Man, Moloid Master
Mole Man, Moloid MasterMole Man, Moloid Master is the perfect card for Landfall decks. First, it provides a Crucible of WorldsCrucible of Worlds effect, allowing you to play lands like Mystic SanctuaryMystic Sanctuary from your graveyard. The second benefit is creating a creature token whenever a land you control enters, echoing similar effects found on SporemoundSporemound and other cards. The tokens are perfect for triggering Kodama of the East TreeKodama of the East Tree, sacrificing to Perilous ForaysPerilous Forays, or triggering Beifong's Bounty HuntersBeifong's Bounty Hunters.
#7: Thor, God of Thunder
Thor, God of ThunderThor, God of Thunder gives you the ability to exile an instant, sorcery or equipment from your graveyard and cast it when it enters. While this ability is only meant to be used once, you can easily bypass that by causing Thor to enter multiple times. Cards like The Mind StoneThe Mind Stone, SoulherderSoulherder and Gossip's TalentGossip's Talent accomplish this easily. Pairing these cards with an extra turn spell, such as Temporal ManipulationTemporal Manipulation, allows you to cast the extra turn spell each turn for infinite turns.
#6: Bruce Banner // The Incredible Hulk
The Incredible Hulk is known for his super-strength in the Marvel universe, and his namesake card in Magic is equally strong. Hulk puts a +1/+1 counter on himself when he's dealt damage, and gives you additional combat phases if he's attacking. Hulk can be dealt damage by blocking creatures, but that generally will require an opponent's cooperation. Using CaltropsCaltrops, Raging RegisaurRaging Regisaur and similar cards doesn't require cooperation, however, and lets you easily get infinite combat phases. Goblin BombardmentGoblin Bombardment is another viable option when paired with Legion WarbossLegion Warboss to make a creature token every combat phase.
#5: Doc Samson, Super Psychiatrist
Doc Samson is another double threat card providing two very useful effects. The first increases counters on permanents, similar to Shang-Chi, Martial Mentor in many combos. Doc Samson can also increase all types of counters, including charge counters on Magistrate's ScepterMagistrate's Scepter or loyalty counters on planeswalkers. Doc's second ability lets it add large amounts of mana, with a similar ability to Mona Lisa, Science GeekMona Lisa, Science Geek. This can easily make a two-card infinite combo with Umbral MantleUmbral Mantle and similar cards.
#4: Heroic Feast
Heroic FeastHeroic Feast acts as an upgraded version of Ajani's PridemateAjani's Pridemate, placing +1/+1 counters on a certain number of creatures when you gain life. Not only can you place multiple counters, but you can choose what creatures get those counters, leading to very beneficial results. Placing those counters on Herd BalothHerd Baloth creates creature tokens, and placing them on Lonis, Genetics ExpertLonis, Genetics Expert creates Clue tokens. Pairing Herd Baloth, Heroic Feast and Essence WardenEssence Warden leads to a simple infinite combo giving infinite life, +1/+1 counters and creature tokens.
#3: Shang-Chi, Master of Kung Fu
The second Shang-Chi on this list, Shang-Chi, Master of Kung FuShang-Chi, Master of Kung Fu allows your creatures to activate abilities as though they have haste. This makes it similar to Thousand-Year ElixirThousand-Year Elixir or Dynaheir, Invoker AdeptDynaheir, Invoker Adept. Most combos that use a traditional haste enabler (think AngerAnger) can also use Shang-Chi, unless those combos involve infinite combats and/or attacking repeatedly. Myr PropagatorMyr Propagator can make tokens of itself that can tap immediately, and Selvala, Heart of the WildsSelvala, Heart of the Wilds can tap immediately for large amounts of mana. Shang-Chi's effect can simply speed up abilities by removing the requirement to wait out summoning sickness.
#2: Invisible Woman, Sue Storm
Even though you may have trouble seeing her, Invisible Woman, Sue StormInvisible Woman, Sue Storm is a creature making machine, adding redundancy for Scurry OakScurry Oak and similar cards assuming you control another Hero. A great way to use Sue in a combo is to pair it with Aunt MayAunt May to gain life when a creature enters from Sue's trigger, and then put a counter on Spider-Man, Peter ParkerSpider-Man, Peter Parker using its ability. Because Spider-Man is a Hero, it'll trigger Invisible Woman and continue the combo easily.
#1: The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl
The strongest combo card from Marvel isn't a Captain America, Hulk or Doctor Doom card - it's The Unbeatable Squirrel GirlThe Unbeatable Squirrel Girl! With her immense ability to create more Squirrels, she can quickly spiral out of control by doubling the amount of Squirrels you control for just four mana. Getting this mana is very simple - you can sacrifice four Squirrels to Phyrexian AltarPhyrexian Altar, tap them to create mana thanks to Jaheira, Friend of the ForestJaheira, Friend of the Forest or use them with EarthcraftEarthcraft. If you have large amounts of mana, perhaps from Treasures, you can simply activate the ability a few times and get large amounts of Squirrels that'll probably end the game with ease. There isn't an easier way to take care of squirrely opponents.
