Here we are again, everyone, where for the second week in a row, I jump headfirst into the bulk of a new release, in order to tell you about the best commons and uncommons hidden in there. This time around, I'm tackling the Jumpstart product from Marvel Super Heroes, because there are still some great new cards in there that you shouldn't let collect dust.
So, join me, Tyler 'Savesya' Bucks, as I take a look at some virtuous Heroes, vexing Villains, and everything else in between in this new edition of Bulk Up!
WHITE
Peggy Carter, Secret AgentPeggy Carter, Secret Agent
If you have a beloved Voltron deck, then you might want to consider adding Peggy Carter, Secret AgentPeggy Carter, Secret Agent into that list. Handing out indestructible to a powerful attacking creature adds some extra protection to your deck, so you can continue to drive damage towards your opponent's faces turn after turn with a buffed-up sledgehammer.
(See Light-Paws, Emperor's VoiceLight-Paws, Emperor's Voice as a possible pairing.)
Ultimate AllianceUltimate Alliance
The main goal of any Token deck is to load up their board with an army of creatures, which is what makes Ultimate AllianceUltimate Alliance pretty useful for those lists. Spending only one mana to take out a large threat is pretty nice; plus, you can utilize it at instant speed, just in case someone tries to remove some of your creatures.
(See Silverquill, the DisputantSilverquill, the Disputant as a possible pairing.)
Doctor Jane FosterDoctor Jane Foster
We've already talked about several popular archetypes today, and now it's time to cover another one by looking at a Lifegain support card. Doctor Jane FosterDoctor Jane Foster hits play and gets you back a smaller creature either to your hand or right onto the field, which is a pretty nice rate for that kind of effect.
(See Elas il-Kor, Sadistic PilgrimElas il-Kor, Sadistic Pilgrim as a possible pairing.)
BLUE
Multiversal RecruitmentMultiversal Recruitment
Multiversal RecruitmentMultiversal Recruitment is one of the more expensive cards on this list today, fetching around $8 (at time of writing). That's a pretty high price for an uncommon, however it's understandable why. Four mana is a normal rate for a clone effect, and having the opportunity to cast it again with flashback means it can come in handy during the late game.
(See Mizzix of the IzmagnusMizzix of the Izmagnus as a possible pairing.)
Daughter of the DeepDaughter of the Deep
I'm becoming a huge fan of the cards like Daughter of the DeepDaughter of the Deep, that trigger when you draw your second card each turn. All decks are looking to keep their hands full, so getting paid off for doing so feels great. When it comes to this creature, the fact that it hits play early on and creates tokens as the game progresses ensures that you have solid defenses as you make your way to value-town.
(See The Council of FourThe Council of Four as a possible pairing.)
Pharaoh Rama-TutPharaoh Rama-Tut
A lot of the Villains from this set love conniving and Pharaoh Rama-TutPharaoh Rama-Tut is no different. This Noble gives you the ability to draw and discard whenever you cast a noncreature spell, which is such a powerful effect in the right list, since it lets you see more of your deck while growing with counters.
(See Norman OsbornNorman Osborn as a possible pairing.)
Timeline InquiryTimeline Inquiry
A four-mana, instant-speed way to draw three and discard one isn't the most groundbreaking spell on the list today, but Timeline InquiryTimeline Inquiry provides another layer to help set it apart. That teamwork ability allows you to simply go up three cards instead of discarding anything, which makes it pretty flexible for what you need at that time.
(See Kilo, Apogee MindKilo, Apogee Mind as a possible pairing.)
Impossible ManImpossible Man
Impossible ManImpossible Man offers up a pretty interesting cloning effect, since it can become a copy of anything on the battlefield until end of turn, for only three mana. Which is great for copying your own permanents, but also anyone else's key value pieces. Plus, you can activate it on other people's turns, which means you could be making this card into a myriad of things as the turns go on.
(See Tazri, Stalwart SurvivorTazri, Stalwart Survivor as a possible pairing.)
BLACK
Criminal EnterpriseCriminal Enterprise
Anytime we get a creature type specific version of a staple, you know it needs to show up in a list like this. Criminal EnterpriseCriminal Enterprise rhymes with Bastion of RemembranceBastion of Remembrance, it hits play, gives you a creature, and drains the table when members of your team bite the dust, which is a great combination of abilities for only three mana.
(See Prowler, Clawed ThiefProwler, Clawed Thief as a possible pairing.)
Songbird, Sonic ScreamerSongbird, Sonic Screamer
At first glance, Songbird, Sonic ScreamerSongbird, Sonic Screamer might not seem like the flashiest creature on the list. However, free discard outlets can be incredibly powerful when paired with the right payoffs. Combining that ability with a two-mana, lifelinking flyer makes this a great rate for all those effects.
(See Hashaton, Scarab's FistHashaton, Scarab's Fist as a possible pairing.)
Hammerhead, Maggia BossHammerhead, Maggia Boss
Another beneficial effect to have access to, is a way to sacrifice your creatures or artifacts for free. Hammerhead, Maggia BossHammerhead, Maggia Boss can hit the field on turn two, and start triggering all your dies triggers as the game goes on, all while growing with all of those +1/+1 counters.
(See Korvold, Fae-Cursed KingKorvold, Fae-Cursed King as a possible pairing.)
Undead Hand NinjaUndead Hand Ninja
If you have a deck that's constantly causing creatures to leave your graveyard, then Undead Hand NinjaUndead Hand Ninja is right for you. There are plenty of ways to trigger that, whether it be through recursion, delving, encoring, or any other effect that helps creatures leave your yard, you'll be draining the table as the game goes on.
(See Xu-Ifit, OsteoharmonistXu-Ifit, Osteoharmonist as a possible pairing.)
RED
Wiccan, Young AvengerWiccan, Young Avenger
With each new set, we get more and more "play from exile" support. Wiccan, Young AvengerWiccan, Young Avenger adds itself to that list by giving you access to more cards from the top of your library whenever you cast a noncreature spell. Plus, Wiccan allows you to play that card until the end of your next turn, which means you could chain a few spells together, and store up some cards for when you untap.
(See Rocco, Street ChefRocco, Street Chef as a possible pairing.)
Heroes for HireHeroes for Hire
Our next card offers up some mana ramp and card advantage all on one enchantment. Heroes for HireHeroes for Hire fits perfectly with any deck that's looking to fill their board with Treasures, play cards from exile, or even do both. Plus, this art is incredible, and is almost worth playing just because of that!
(See Prosper, Tome-BoundProsper, Tome-Bound as a possible pairing.)
Alex Wilder, RunawayAlex Wilder, Runaway
Alex Wilder, RunawayAlex Wilder, Runaway offers up haste and a power buff to your creatures that were cast from anywhere other than your hand. This works for casting things from your graveyard, the top of your library, and of course from exile, which could help a deck quickly push damage forward as the game goes on.
(See Fire Lord ZukoFire Lord Zuko as a possible pairing.)
Crossover CollaborationCrossover Collaboration
A three mana spell that "draws" two is a pretty standard rate, but Crossover CollaborationCrossover Collaboration has another trick up its sleeve. If you cast it using that teamwork ability, you get a Treasure token as well, which is a great level of value at instant speed. I'm a huge fan of this one, so I know I'll be on the lookout for it for myself.
(See Gwen StacyGwen Stacy as a possible pairing.)
Bionic BlowBionic Blow
If you have a deck centered around buffing up your creatures, then Bionic BlowBionic Blow could be great for you. Not only does it build up something's power, but it also allows you to remove a scary creature on an opponent's board, which definitely feels like a one-two punch (pun kind of intended).
(See Wolverine, Best There IsWolverine, Best There Is as a possible pairing.)
GREEN
Tippy-Toe, Terrific PartnerTippy-Toe, Terrific Partner
Kicking things off for our green section today is Tippy-Toe, Terrific PartnerTippy-Toe, Terrific Partner, which is going for a whopping $15 right now. It's understandable, because it adds more tokens to your board and can draw you an additional card on your turn. Plus, that Squirrel creature type is especially useful since we're getting a big uptick in decks around those chittering friends.
(See Camellia, the SeedmiserCamellia, the Seedmiser as a possible pairing.)
Bushmaster, Coiled HenchmanBushmaster, Coiled Henchman
One of the most popular deck archetypes to build around in is the +1/+1 counter strategy, and Bushmaster, Coiled HenchmanBushmaster, Coiled Henchman is a slam dunk for those lists. Adding deathtouch to your board for only two mana is a great rate, because that specific keyword could be a major headache for your opponents to deal with.
(See Kodama of the West TreeKodama of the West Tree as a possible pairing.)
FlatmanFlatman
Alright, I know that FlatmanFlatman isn't an auto include in most decks, but having the stats of 1/10 is just crazy. Sure, it'll be a great blocker, but swinging with this creature will be pretty funny, since people won't want to let it through if you have mana up. Plus, if you have a Toughness Matters style deck, this gets even better.
(See Doran, Besieged by TimeDoran, Besieged by Time as a possible pairing.)
Black Tom CassidyBlack Tom Cassidy
As we get more Universes Beyond sets, it seems like the Mutant creature type will become a mainstay. It's why Black Tom CassidyBlack Tom Cassidy seems like a good card to set aside as a solid synergistic mana dork, especially if we get an X-Men centric set in the future.
(See The Wise MothmanThe Wise Mothman as a possible pairing.)
COLORLESS
Team TransmitterTeam Transmitter
It's time for one of my favorite segments for Bulk Up called: is this three-mana rock good enough to run? Team TransmitterTeam Transmitter offers up some ramp and lifegain whenever a Hero hits your board, which is pretty solid for pushing forward your game plan while padding your life total. If you're building around one of your favorite characters, this card could help.
(See Nick Fury, Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D.Nick Fury, Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. as a possible pairing.)
Daily Bugle NewspaperDaily Bugle Newspaper
Daily Bugle NewspaperDaily Bugle Newspaper offers up a Marvel-themed version of Collector's VaultCollector's Vault to any deck looking for that effect. If you already have a list running that Eldraine uncommon, then you might want to find a copy of this new card in a nearby newspaper agency...or, maybe you should check your local game store first.
(See Knuckles the EchidnaKnuckles the Echidna as a possible pairing.)
MULTICOLOR
Shuri, Vibranium TechnologistShuri, Vibranium Technologist
Blink decks are always searching for good targets to exile, in order to bring back to the battlefield, and Shuri, Vibranium TechnologistShuri, Vibranium Technologist fits right in with those lists. Having the ability to either build up your board by creating a creature token, or draw an additional card, means that this provides something useful no matter what you're looking for at that time.
(See Brago, King EternalBrago, King Eternal as a possible pairing.)
Iceman and FirestarIceman and Firestar
If you have a Spellslinger deck in your collection, Iceman and FirestarIceman and Firestar can provide you with a lot of value. Now, whenever you progress your plan, you can be rummaging through your deck, or tapping down some threats on your opponents' boards. Plus, if you cast a spell that's red and blue, you get to do both!
(See Veyran, Voice of DualityVeyran, Voice of Duality as a possible pairing.)
Iron Lad, Young AvengerIron Lad, Young Avenger
There's nothing too flashy about this next card, other than the fact that this hero seems to be using force lightning?! Iron Lad, Young AvengerIron Lad, Young Avenger simply makes your noncreature spells cost one less mana, which can help you chain spells together, and allow you to enact your game plan more easily.
(See Jhoira, Weatherlight CaptainJhoira, Weatherlight Captain as a possible pairing.)
