The Best Winter Combo Cards in Commander

Frostcliff SiegeFrostcliff Siege | Art by Dan Murayama Scott

It's a new year, and a new set of Wombo Combo, where we explore Commander's best combo cards using data from EDHREC and Commander Spellbook. This time of year marks winter for the northern hemisphere, so let's take a look at Commander's best winter themed combo cards!

Jorn, God of Winter
Rimefeather Owl
Isu the Abominable

Before we dive into the list, let's set a few criteria for what we will consider winter themed. For the purposes of this list, I have scoured through Magic's snow and Yeti type cards, and the following keywords in the card's name: winter, ice, snow, and frost. Each card will meet at least one of these criteria, and allow you a seasonal combo to pull out of your next deck.

Let's ring in the new year, and let it snow to combo success!

#10: Phyrexian Ironfoot

Phyrexian Ironfoot

Number of Combos: 11

Deck Inclusions: 568 decks (0.01%)

Phyrexian IronfootPhyrexian Ironfoot is a seldom used snow card that allows you to pay snow mana to untap it. It begs to be tapped for mana, producing snow mana due to it being a snow permanent, and then use that mana to untap it. A simple way to do this is to use Cryptolith RiteCryptolith Rite or Paradise MantleParadise Mantle to allow Phyrexian Ironfoot to tap, and then amplifying the mana production with Nyxbloom AncientNyxbloom Ancient.

You can also run Phyrexian Ironfoot in an Ashaya, Soul of the WildAshaya, Soul of the Wild deck, turning it into a Forest land and allowing it to add .

#9: Deceptive Frostkite

Deceptive Frostkite

Number of Combos: 11

Deck Inclusions: 24,756 decks (1.17%)

Deceptive FrostkiteDeceptive Frostkite is a two-mana CloneClone style creature, with the caveat that it can only copy a creature you control with power four or greater. With it being a Dragon, it's a perfect card to pair with Bladewing the RisenBladewing the Risen, allowing you to have it enter as Bladewing, kill Bladewing due to the legend rule, and recur it infinitely.

You can also have Deceptive Frostkite enter as Wispweaver AngelWispweaver Angel for infinite blinking, or Mirror-Mad PhantasmMirror-Mad Phantasm to mill out your library if you play recursion or want a Laboratory ManiacLaboratory Maniac win condition.

You can also just get as many Colossal DreadmawColossal Dreadmaws as you can handle, if your heart desires.

#8: Storvald, Frost Giant Jarl

Storvald, Frost Giant Jarl

Number of Combos: 21

Deck Inclusions: 1,341 as commander (#1,216); 6,457 as card (0.74%)

Storvald, Frost Giant JarlStorvald, Frost Giant Jarl provides the great benefit of giving your creatures ward , providing great protection for your creatures against pesky removal spells.

It also provides very unique opportunities to use its triggered ability to win you the game. This is all thanks to a very unique card in Near-Death ExperienceNear-Death Experience. How it works involves Storvald setting either Evra, Halcyon WitnessEvra, Halcyon Witness or Tree of RedemptionTree of Redemption's toughness to one, then using them to make your life total one.

This causes Near-Death Experience to win you the game, in a risky but unique combo line that'll be sure to make you the talk of the table.

#7: Icetill Explorer

Icetill Explorer

Number of Combos: 60

Deck Inclusions: 90,471 decks (7.08%)

Icetill ExplorerIcetill Explorer is a newer card from Edge of Eternities, but has already made a splash in the Commander scene. It's a dream card for Landfall decks, combining an ExplorationExploration effect with Crucible of WorldsCrucible of Worlds. It also has you mill cards as lands enter, allowing you to play them from your graveyard, or use Muldrotha, the GravetideMuldrotha, the Gravetide style cards to play them otherwise.

Shockingly, Icetill Explorer works best when paired with other landfall cards (who would've guessed?), including Springheart NantukoSpringheart Nantuko, SpelunkingSpelunking, and the bounce lands (like Simic Growth ChamberSimic Growth Chamber).

Sacrificing or destroying lands is also an option, making Dust BowlDust Bowl or Zuran OrbZuran Orb great inclusions alongside Icetill Explorer.

#6: Centaur Omenreader

Centaur Omenreader

Number of Combos: 65

Deck Inclusions: 3,767 decks (0.11%)

Centaur OmenreaderCentaur Omenreader is an unique cost reducer that reduces creature spells you cast by , but only if it's tapped. Fortunately, tapping a creature in Magic is easy, and can be done by attacking, by spells like Artful TakedownArtful Takedown, or EarthcraftEarthcraft and other similar cards.

Once it's tapped, Centaur Omenreader allows you to cast airbent cards for free, making Aang, Airbending MasterAang, Airbending Master and Appa, Steadfast GuardianAppa, Steadfast Guardian very pleased. Centaur Omenreader can also reduce the costs of creatures like Walking BallistaWalking Ballista or Ancestral StatueAncestral Statue, making combos with them easier and providing additional results.

#5: Adarkar Valkyrie

Adarkar Valkyrie

Number of Combos: 68

Deck Inclusions: 14,618 decks (0.41%)

Adarkar ValkyrieAdarkar Valkyrie taps to return a creature that dies this turn to the battlefield under your control. This allows Adarkar Valkyrie to serve as a substitute for Saffi EriksdotterSaffi Eriksdotter in some combos, and makes others easier due to the lack of a need to recur Adarkar Valkyrie, unlike Saffi.

Adarkar Valkyrie can use Thornbite StaffThornbite Staff to untap itself when the creature dies to a sacrifice outlet (more on that later), providing additional results. Aurelia, the WarleaderAurelia, the Warleader can also use Adarkar Valkyrie to get infinite combat phases by sacrificing Aurelia after it triggers and recurring it each combat phase.

You can also sacrifice Kiki-Jiki, Mirror BreakerKiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker and recur it for infinite tapped creature tokens.

#4: Icewind Stalwart

Icewind Stalwart

Number of Combos: 72

Deck Inclusions: 6,835 decks (0.19%)

Icewind StalwartIcewind Stalwart is similar to Restoration AngelRestoration Angel and blinks any creature that isn't a Warrior as it enters. While this restriction can rule it out of some combo lines, there are plenty that won't be affected.

For example, Icewind Stalwart can trigger, be sacrificed, and then blink Karmic GuideKarmic Guide which will return Icewind Stalwart to the battlefield. Icewind Stalwart can also blink an airbending card like Aang, the Last AirbenderAang, the Last Airbender to be cast again from exile, or another blinking card (like Restoration Angel) to create an infinite ETB and LTB combo.

#3: Moritte of the Frost

Moritte of the Frost

Number of Combos: 104

Deck Inclusions: 1,042 as commander (#1,373); 18,686 as card (1.09%)

Moritte of the FrostMoritte of the Frost is another Clone effect, like Deceptive Frostkite, with some notable differences. It's legendary, and therefore can be your commander. It also retains its snow and legendary typing and enters with two +1/+1 counters on it if it copies a creature.

What really makes Moritte different, however, is its ability to copy a permanent instead of just a creature, adding much more utility. This allows Moritte to copy Staff of Eden, Vault's KeyStaff of Eden, Vault's Key and be recurred infinitely.

Moritte's added counters can also counteract persist abilities, allowing it to copy Aerie OuphesAerie Ouphes and infinitely combo with ease.

#2: Frostcliff Siege

Frostcliff Siege

Number of Combos: 208

Deck Inclusions: 56,276 decks (5.44%)

Frostcliff SiegeFrostcliff Siege has two separate effects, but we'll be focusing on the Temur mode for combo purposes. Haste enablers are pivotal for many infinite combat combos involving Breath of FuryBreath of Fury or Combat CelebrantCombat Celebrant. Frostcliff Siege also allows mana producers, including Selvala, Heart of the WildsSelvala, Heart of the Wilds, to tap for mana immediately, and then be returned to your hand with Temur SabertoothTemur Sabertooth.

If you love Black LotusBlack Lotus, you can also tap Garth One-EyeGarth One-Eye as it enters to create a Black Lotus, and blink Garth with Displacer KittenDisplacer Kitten.

#1: Thermopod

Thermopod

Number of Combos: 1,829

Deck Inclusions: 10,514 decks (0.27%)

Of course a sacrifice outlet has to make the list, and there happens to be a good snow option in ThermopodThermopod. This Slug allows you to sacrifice a creature to add that counts as snow mana.

Sacrifice outlets are needed for a large section of combos, especially those involving deaths and/or recursion. Thermopod enables combos for Intruder AlarmIntruder Alarm, Krenko, Mob BossKrenko, Mob Boss, and Squee, the ImmortalSquee, the Immortal, among many other cards.

It also provides an outlet for infinite creature tokens combos, giving you infinite and death triggers, which can be dumped into a payoff like Crackle with PowerCrackle with Power. Thermopod's ability to make snow mana also makes it an option to pay snow costs, like that of Phyrexian Ironfoot or Faceless HavenFaceless Haven, which sets it apart from other options like Phyrexian AltarPhyrexian Altar.

Honorable Mentions

If you wish for the snowfall to continue, here's a few more options:
