Hello friends! And welcome back to EDHREC for another Scrap Trawlers precon Upgrade Guide. I’m Andy, and today I’m seeing if I can amp up the Cavalry Charge precon from March of the Machine for just a few bucks.
As you may have seen in my primer for Cavalry Charge, I’m really happy with the deck right out of the box. Seriously, very few notes. As far as precons go, this one, as the kids say, slaps. So where can we go to improve it?
I’m gonna upgrade a couple of lands, give the deck a few anthem effects, and make sure our commander is hitting opponents more often for that sweet recursion triggered effect.
And for all you big spenders out there, stay tuned to the end, because we’re gonna look at some pricey cards to upgrade the list as well.
<h2>In Charge of the Charge</h2>
This deck is led by <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Sidar Jabari of Zhalfir" href="#" target="_blank">Sidar Jabari of Zhalfir</a>. He’s a 4/3 white, blue, and black Human Knight with flying and first strike, and he brings a Knight back from our graveyard whenever he connects with an opponent’s face. Oh, also Eminence. Holy crap, we got Eminence again! Sidar’s ability, whether he’s on the field or in the zone, lets you loot (draw a card and discard a card) whenever you attack with Knights.

The alternate commander for this deck is <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Elenda and Azor" href="#" target="_blank">Elenda and Azor</a>. While I dig this pair for a slower game, I’m far more interested in seeing what we can do to make this deck punch even harder with Sidar in the lead.
<h2>Battlefield Promotion</h2>
With any commander that has a “when it deals combat damage to an opponent” effect, you’re going to get the most mileage by giving your commander more abilities. Namely, trample, double strike, and unblockable (how is this not a keyword?).

I’ve enlisted a couple of Backgrounds for this upgrade, because Backgrounds are always fun to add when you have a commander that wants to attack. <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Sword Coast Sailor" href="#" target="_blank">Sword Coast Sailor</a> ensures that we’re hitting faces every attack, barring any removal effects. And <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Flaming Fist" href="#" target="_blank">Flaming Fist</a> gives our commander double strike. Because what’s better than triggering Sidar once? You guessed it. It’s twice. <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Duelist’s Heritage" href="#" target="_blank">Duelist’s Heritage</a> has entered the fray for the same reason.
Since this is a creature type-focused deck, we can lean into that with another Background, <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Folk Hero" href="#" target="_blank">Folk Hero</a>, which will give us a lot of extra card draw for just two mana.
We can also use this focus to upgrade our land base a bit, with <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Unclaimed Territory" href="#" target="_blank">Unclaimed Territory</a> and <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Secluded Courtyard" href="#" target="_blank">Secluded Courtyard</a>. These take the place of two lands that enter tapped, speeding us along on our merry way.

I’m also adding two powerful and cheap Knights to the deck, <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Skyhunter Strike Force" href="#" target="_blank">Skyhunter Strike Force</a> and <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Marshal of Zhalfir" href="#" target="_blank">Marshal of Zhalfir</a>. And while we’re making our Knights bigger, we’re also gonna make everything else smaller to move in for that alpha strike, with <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Crippling Fear" href="#" target="_blank">Crippling Fear</a>.
Dishonorable Discharge
Alright, cards go in, cards must come out. We’ve added nine cards, so let’s see what we’re dropping.
The easiest place to start was the lands. I’ve never been a big fan of lands with counters, because I like to stack my lands and the counters just make it messy. So to make room for <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Secluded Courtyard" href="#" target="_blank">Secluded Courtyard</a> and <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Unclaimed Territory" href="#" target="_blank">Unclaimed Territory</a>, I’m taking out <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Thriving Isle" href="#" target="_blank">Thriving Isle</a> and <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Thriving Moor" href="#" target="_blank">Thriving Moor</a>. So now I’ll be thriving more. Get it? Please, hold your applause to the end.

The deck had an abundance of card advantage, which wasn’t totally necessary with Sidar’s Eminence ability. So out goes <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Painful Truths" href="#" target="_blank">Painful Truths</a>, <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Path of the Enigma" href="#" target="_blank">Path of the Enigma</a>, <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Pull from Tomorrow" href="#" target="_blank">Pull from Tomorrow</a>, and <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Syr Elenora, the Discerning" href="#" target="_blank">Syr Elenora, the Discerning</a>. As much as I didn’t want to cut any Knights, Elenora just didn’t do enough to justify the five mana cost. 
A couple of Equipment were in the precon that seem superfluous, so they’re getting axed. <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Maul of the Skyclaves" href="#" target="_blank">Maul of the Skyclaves</a> and <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Sigiled Sword of Valeron" href="#" target="_blank">Sigiled Sword of Valeron</a> are both too expensive to equip, and really don’t add enough value.
Last to fall is <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Fell the Mighty" href="#" target="_blank">Fell the Mighty</a>. Precons these days tend to have too many board wipes, which just drag out the game. By replacing this with <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Crippling Fear" href="#" target="_blank">Crippling Fear</a>, I’m moving the game forward rather than resetting.
<h2>Extravagant Knights</h2>
Okay big spenders, it’s your time to open those wallets.
Spending big money on creature type-focused decks is incredibly easy, because a lot of the best cards are in such high demand. Take <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Cavern of Souls" href="#" target="_blank">Cavern of Souls</a>, for example, which is <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Unclaimed Territory" href="#" target="_blank">Unclaimed Territory</a> on steroids.

<a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Urza’s Incubator" href="#" target="_blank">Urza’s Incubator</a> will make your Knights cheaper, while <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Door of Destinies" href="#" target="_blank">Door of Destinies</a> will make them much more threatening. And <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Kindred Discovery" href="#" target="_blank">Kindred Discovery</a> will draw you more cards than you’ll ever need with all the Knights you’re gonna turn sideways.
Sadly missing from the precon is <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Kinsbaile Cavalier" href="#" target="_blank">Kinsbaile Cavalier</a>, which gives all your Knights double strike. I know the deck already has some high value reprints, but…come on. A real missed opportunity.
<a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Invasion of New Phyrexia" href="#" target="_blank">Invasion of New Phyrexia</a> is a lot of fun here, as the front side gives us Knight tokens, while the back is a Teferi that pumps and protects our Knights for his -2.
<a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Akroma’s Will" href="#" target="_blank">Akroma’s Will</a> is a solid, but pricey, inclusion for any aggro deck. We’ve also got <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Vexilus Praetor" href="#" target="_blank">Vexilus Praetor</a>, which, while not a Knight, does a great job of helping Sidar punch some faces. Also from Warhammer 40K is <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="And They Shall Know No Fear" href="#" target="_blank">And They Shall Know No Fear</a>.

It’s amazing what a few cards and a few bucks can do to improve a precon. We upgraded nine cards for just $6. With those new cards we sped up the mana base, pumped up our Knights, and made Sidar’s triggered ability more frequent. All in all, a nice improvement to an already great deck.

Hello all, I am Bert from the Scrap Trawlers, where we do EDH on a budget. Today we are going to be taking a look at the Tinker Time precon from March of the Machine. The star of the show this time around is <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Gimbal, Gremlin Prodigy" href="#" target="_blank">Gimbal, Gremlin Prodigy</a>, putting us in the artifact wheel house. We'll go over how the deck plays, the strengths and weaknesses, and which new and reprinted cards are going to be worth looking at. Let’s get to it!
<h2>Workshop Captain</h2>

So taking a look at our face commander again, <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Gimbal, Gremlin Prodigy" href="#" target="_blank">Gimbal, Gremlin Prodigy</a> is a five mana Temur commander that cares about artifacts, which is a first. He gives artifact creatures we control trample while also creating a Gremlin artifact creature token at our end step that cares about the number of differently named artifact tokens that we have! That second ability makes Gimbal really interesting as we'll get to run a bunch of different token creators; so be sure to have your game pieces ready! This deck also comes with some Planechase cards, but unless your playgroup wants to play, you may end up trading these away. Well with that in mind, let's take a look at the list.

After taking a look at the deck, I believe we have a cohesive artifact deck that not only creates the tokens that Gimbal wants, but also has a bunch of different outlets to use them. This deck is definitely feeling more midrange where we can have a bit of control over the game so that we can get our more powerful creatures out. Let’s give a look to where our deck excels. 
<h2>Workshop Dynamos and Workshop Woes</h2>

As a midrange deck we aim to control the board early so that we can get our value creatures on and continue to outpace our opponents. The problem is that the current iteration of the deck has a 3.84 average mana value, which makes it a bit hard to outpace anyoe. What this does is put a lot of our plays on the later part of the game, making it rough to keep up a healthy pace in the early game. However, to put this in a more positive light, the longer a game goes the more threats we will have. Setting up the board is very important and right now with such a high average mana value it makes it hard to do that.
Another issue with the deck is the lack of card draw sources to keep that hand full and able to continue dishing out threats. These are both things that we address in the precon upgrade guide, so be sure to check that out! 
Enough about what's wrong with the deck! This deck's removal package is amazing. Not only does it have cards for creatures and artifacts and enchantments, but it also possesses spells that care about Gimbal’s second ability. Cards like <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Crack Open" href="#" target="_blank">Crack Open</a> and <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Root Out" href="#" target="_blank">Root Out</a> both destroy and create a relevant token for Gimbal. I wasn’t that high on <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Vampires’ Vengeance" href="#" target="_blank">Vampires’ Vengeance</a>, but it's almost somewhat of a board wipe and produces a Blood token for us.
The value cards are also present, with a reprint to another one of my favorite cards, <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Shimmer Dragon" href="#" target="_blank">Shimmer Dragon</a>, which gives us something to do with excess artifact tokens. The rest of the reprints are lackluster but provide good synergies for the deck. Looking at <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Bloodforged Battle-axe" href="#" target="_blank">Bloodforged Battle-axe</a>, <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Combine Chrysalis" href="#" target="_blank">Combine Chrysalis</a>, and <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Sharding Sphinx" href="#" target="_blank">Sharding Sphinx</a>. They've all played a vital role in their respective strategies before now, and I think that they'll also provide some power to this deck as well.
The deck's main focus of creating copies of both token and nontoken permanants is something that it does well, using cards like the new <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Schema Thief" href="#" target="_blank">Schema Thief</a>, and a card that I have been pretty high on for a while, <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Saheeli&#039;s Artistry" href="#" target="_blank">Saheeli&#039;s Artistry</a>.
<h2>New Inventions</h2>

New cards that make an appearance in this deck are <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Sandsteppe War Riders" href="#" target="_blank">Sandsteppe War Riders</a>, <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Dance with Calamity" href="#" target="_blank">Dance with Calamity</a>, <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Cutthroat Negotiator" href="#" target="_blank">Cutthroat Negotiator</a>, <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Pain Distributor" href="#" target="_blank">Pain Distributor</a>, <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Schema Thief" href="#" target="_blank">Schema Thief</a>, and our alternate commander <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Rashmi and Ragavan" href="#" target="_blank">Rashmi and Ragavan</a>. I am expecting Schema Thief to be an absolute house, making copies of, at worst, mana rocks which the deck will love so that it can make stronger gremlins. Sandsteppe War riders will be interesting to see how much you can get it to Bolster for, but the other cards I am indifferent on in this deck . For example, Pain Distributor is going to do some work in playgroups that are worried about Treasures, but for us we'll just be pinging our opponent for one damage sometimes and I am not quite sure that it's worth it here. Dance with Calamity is a nine mana spell that truly does high-mana spell things, but I don't know if it's at its best here. I am excited to see if any of them make a true splash in the format. 
<a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Cutthroat Negotiator" href="#" target="_blank">Cutthroat Negotiator</a> will probably have a better home in a dedicated Pirate deck but the additional Treasure it can provide gives us some good value. Last but not least, our alternate commander <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Rashmi and Ragavan" href="#" target="_blank">Rashmi and Ragavan</a> is an interesting pair to say the least. They still care about artifacts just as Gimbal does, just in a different way. It has the thievery of Ragavan and the first spell clause of Rashmi! Those effects together make for an interesting and powerful combination. 
<h2>Final thoughts</h2>
The Tinker Time precon is definitely one worth picking up. Temur artifacts is an interesting take on the color grouping, and this precon is very cohesive and synergistic. Sometimes precons are lacking in a bunch of different areas, but this one in particular doesn’t have any glaring weaknesses. It just needs some parts that can help it pop off a bit more. Hello again everyone! I’m Bert from the Scrap Trawlers channel, where we do EDH on a budget. Last time we showed off the new Tinker Time deck from March of the Machine, so now we're back to give that deck some upgrades so it can work to its full potential. So that we can go over the upgrades properly let's take a look at the decklist and talk about the areas that we want to improve upon. Here is the list:

<h2>Welcome to the Tinker Shop!</h2>

Before we get into the upgrades portion of the article, let's first recall our face commander <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Gimbal, Gremlin Prodigy" href="#" target="_blank">Gimbal, Gremlin Prodigy</a>. Gimbal gives us an unique take on both the Temur color group and the artifact strategy. Gimbal is Temur (red, green, blue) and two colorless for a Gremlin Artificer that cares about artifact creatures and artifact tokens with different names. This gives us a few ways we can build the deck. I plan on taking some good value artifact creatures to create a board state where we can be able to create our artifact tokens in peace. Gimbal looks to want to play as a midrange deck, so this fits in the plan that I have made for the deck. Lets get started, shall we?
<h2>What's New on Gimbal’s Menu</h2>

Just like always, we want to shore up some of the weak sides of our precon. To do that we'll be adding cards to increase our overall card draw and ramp, and increase the overall synergy of the deck. 
Let's get started with some ramp, shall we? I only wanted to add a couple of cards, as we already have a few ramp spells and Treasure production. For some additional Treasures, here is a pet card of mine: <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Rose Room Treasurer" href="#" target="_blank">Rose Room Treasurer</a>. Alliance is a powerful ability that triggers on each creature entering our battlefield, including token creatures. It’s a four mana spell and not true ramp, but we add to the overall mana production of the deck. Some actual mana rocks I'm adding are <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Liquimetal Torque" href="#" target="_blank">Liquimetal Torque</a>,<a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Cursed Mirror" href="#" target="_blank">Cursed Mirror</a>, and <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Mind stone" href="#" target="_blank">Mind stone</a>. Out of these cards, Liquimetal Torque is my favorite, as it sets up some really good plays with our deck, allowing us to give something trample through Gimbal, or make a copy of something we normally wouldn't be able to. 
Next I have some cards that will add to our overall draw package. <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Cathartic Pyre" href="#" target="_blank">Cathartic Pyre</a>, <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Chart a Course" href="#" target="_blank">Chart a Course</a>, and <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Big Score" href="#" target="_blank">Big Score</a> are just some simple card draw options that'll give us value throughout the entire game with Cathartic Pyre and Big Score providing secondary effects. <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Thought Monitor" href="#" target="_blank">Thought Monitor</a> being an artifact creature means copy it and power it up with some of our other cards we're adding. <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Idol of Oblivion" href="#" target="_blank">Idol of Oblivion</a> is another pet card of mine, but it will definitely draw you a bunch of extra cards over the game.

Lastly we have some cards that will just add to the overall synergies of the deck. To add to our token productions, I've added two cards to get a bit more Blood flowing. <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Arterial Alchemy" href="#" target="_blank">Arterial Alchemy</a> and <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Olivia’s Attendants" href="#" target="_blank">Olivia’s Attendants</a> give us access to Blood, which makes our draws a bit smoother while also increasing our token production for Gimbal’s ability.
I felt the deck could do with a few more cards that make it easier to make copies. <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="March of Progress" href="#" target="_blank">March of Progress</a>, <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Mythos of Illuna" href="#" target="_blank">Mythos of Illuna</a>, <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Skitterbeam Battalion" href="#" target="_blank">Skitterbeam Battalion</a>, and <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Sicarian Infiltrator" href="#" target="_blank">Sicarian Infiltrator</a> do that and then more! For a spicy pick I even added <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Fae Offering" href="#" target="_blank">Fae Offering</a> for some additional token creation.
<h2>Picky Eater</h2>

Gimbal’s menu needs a bit of refinement, so we have a few cards to cut. <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Ichor Elixir" href="#" target="_blank">Ichor Elixir</a> and <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Fractured Powerstone" href="#" target="_blank">Fractured Powerstone</a> have been cut for some of the ramp that was mentioned earlier. However, if you and your friends have an inkling to play Planechase, keep them in so you can get those rolls.
Also cut from the deck are the super expensive cards like <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Workshop Elders" href="#" target="_blank">Workshop Elders</a>, <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Dance with Calamity" href="#" target="_blank">Dance with Calamity</a>, and <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Brass’s Bounty" href="#" target="_blank">Brass’s Bounty</a>, just to make our curve a bit smoother. Super niche cards like <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Path of the Animist" href="#" target="_blank">Path of the Animist</a>, <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Weirding Wood" href="#" target="_blank">Weirding Wood</a>, <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Aid from the Cowl" href="#" target="_blank">Aid from the Cowl</a>, and <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Everquill Phoenix" href="#" target="_blank">Everquill Phoenix</a> have also been cut to add space for some synergistic cards that will give us a bit more staying power. Path of the Animist does a great impression of <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Explosive Vegetation" href="#" target="_blank">Explosive Vegetation</a>, but since the focus of the card is mainly Planechase, we can cut it. Both Weirding Wood and Everquill Phoenix are present in the deck so that they can create their unique tokens, but they seem like a bit of a deep dive and can be replaced with something that meshes with the deck more. Aid from the Cowl seems a bit random to me, so I went ahead and cut it so that we can make space for more goodness.
When we make cuts like these, it's important to keep in mind that you can keep cards that you like and find another cut somewhere else. 
<h2>Exquisite Taste</h2>

Here we'll go over some cards that aren't included in my modified list due to their price points, but will power up your Gimbal deck to new heights. The first and by far one of my favorites is going to be <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Faerie Artisans" href="#" target="_blank">Faerie Artisans</a>. This little gem will create an artifact token copy of whatever creature last entered the battlefield under our opponents' control. Faerie Artisans not only makes our opponent sequence their plays so that we end up with a weaker creature, but also gives us another artifact token for Gimbal to count. 
Another awesome card that we can include is going to be <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Wurmcoil Engine" href="#" target="_blank">Wurmcoil Engine</a>. A solid six mana 6/6 that has deathtouch and lifelink that will make two Wurm artifact creature tokens on death, this is just more of what we want. <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Adrix and Nev, Twincasters" href="#" target="_blank">Adrix and Nev, Twincasters</a> will also take us to new heights being a hard to remove token doubler that helps us create a stronger board state. Last but certainly not least we have <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Old Gnawbone" href="#" target="_blank">Old Gnawbone</a> which is just absurd in a deck like this. We care about the number of different tokens that get created but we also need mana to cast spells, and we have the creatures to get through to our opponents. Having this monstrous Dragon on our side is going to make a huge difference in our token creation, and I am here for every bit of it.

What’s up everyone, It’s Bert from the Scrap Trawlers, the place where we bring you EDH on a budget. With the advent of March of the Machine on the horizon, it’s time for another set of Commander decks. Today we're taking a look at the Call for Backup deck from the new set, starring none other than <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Bright-Palm, Soul Awakener" href="#" target="_blank">Bright-Palm, Soul Awakener</a>. Just like always we'll be going over how the deck plays, its strengths and weaknesses, which new cards are worth looking at, and what reprints we are looking forward to the most. Let’s dive in!
<h2>Who’s In the Squad?</h2>

Our face commander is <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Bright-Palm, Soul Awakener" href="#" target="_blank">Bright-Palm, Soul Awakener</a>, which gives us access to Naya colors. Bright-Palm has an ability that focuses on +1/+1 counters but also has the Backup ability, which allows us to share the ability with another creature upon entering the battlefield. This does two things for our overall strategy. First, this dictates that we must have a critical mass of creatures so that Bright-Palm can always have a target to share their ability with. Second, it means that we can put a focus on +1/+1 counter synergies to power up the ability even further, and believe me the deck has a multitude of those already. There's a staggering 39 creatures in the list, with a few of them enabling additional counters being placed on our creatures. This deck also comes with some new Planechase cards which brings some life into a fan-favorite variant. With that in mind, let’s go ahead take a look at the deck list, shall we?

With the list in front of us, I think it's safe to say that, out of the box, we have a smorgasbord of cards in our arsenal. Our playstyle is going to be an aggro deck that focuses on going wide, then after that tall with our creatures. Backup is a flexible ability as it has a dual function in making another creature larger and giving it a new ability, or just making the initial creature larger. We are going to do a lot of attacking with large creatures so we want to make sure that we have a healthy board state at all times. Within our aggro package there is also a small set of cards that allow you to reuse Backup abilities, two of my favorites being <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Restoration Angel" href="#" target="_blank">Restoration Angel</a> and <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Flameshadow Conjuring" href="#" target="_blank">Flameshadow Conjuring</a>. Since we have discussed the strategies at our fingertips let's get into the strengths and weaknesses of the deck. 
<h2>Where Do We Need Backup?</h2>

Just like any aggro deck, Call for Backup's major strength is in the speed at which we can play in a game. This typically means that the first few turns are ours for the taking and we use that to set up for the late game. In our deck we have a ton of creatures, but most of them fall in the mana value of three. The average mana value of the deck is 3.58 which for a precon is really good. This makes it so that our turns allow us to play out our hands and get momentum in our favor as we play bigger and bigger bombs. An example is to have a few creatures with counters on them before we play our <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Kalonian Hydra" href="#" target="_blank">Kalonian Hydra</a> so that we can get a ton of power and value from it.
To touch on a couple of the weaknesses of the deck, we have to focus on the problems that a lot of precons face. The deck currently lacks card draw, which is vital in deck construction. The deck does include <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Armorcraft Judge" href="#" target="_blank">Armorcraft Judge</a> and <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Inspiring Call" href="#" target="_blank">Inspiring Call</a>, which gives us a good amount of cards but in its current iteration there is no repeatable card draw source. In addition to card draw, since we have a focus on the board state I would like to see a little bit more protection for our creatures. The deck includes the previously mentioned <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Inspiring Call" href="#" target="_blank">Inspiring Call</a> which does give our creatures indestructible, as well as <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Hindervines" href="#" target="_blank">Hindervines</a> which protects our creatures with counters on them from damage. Lastly, we have <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Semester’s end" href="#" target="_blank">Semester’s end</a> which is a solid spell, however I think that there are some other spells that can do more for us (I'll go over that in my upgrade guide). With that behind us, let's talk about some of the new cards and some of the awesome reprints in this deck.
<h2>Something Old and Something New</h2>

There are a bunch of reprinted cards included in this deck that I am ecstatic to see. The first and by far the most expensive is <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Kalonian Hydra" href="#" target="_blank">Kalonian Hydra</a>, something of a staple for +1/+1 counter decks. This particular card is sitting at about 15 dollars so lets hope to see that price dip as the printings start to roll out. As I stated earlier, this is a bomb in our deck and will make for some powerful plays. 
Next on cards that I am excited to see reprinted is <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Flameshadow Conjuring" href="#" target="_blank">Flameshadow Conjuring</a>. Enabling haste in this deck makes a world of difference and this is a solid way to do it, as well as allowing us to get double the Backup triggers. In that same vein are <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Restoration Angel" href="#" target="_blank">Restoration Angel</a> and <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Flamerush Rider" href="#" target="_blank">Flamerush Rider</a> another two cards that serve the purpose of giving us more usages of Backup with the latter having the ability to give itself haste and make a copy of another attacking creature, creating some interesting plays. 
Finally, there is probably my favorite card in creature based Commander decks, <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Champion of Lambholt" href="#" target="_blank">Champion of Lambholt</a>. This card is bonkers as it will grow to the point that allows us to bypass our opponents' defenses.
We've discussed the old, now let's look at the new! The card I know that people are excited for is the alternate commander, <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Shalai and Hallar" href="#" target="_blank">Shalai and Hallar</a>, which is a powerhouse in and of itself. Dealing damage to target opponent can get out of hand quickly, especially in a deck like this. I can’t wait to see what people do with this card. 
The two cards that I am personally excited for are <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Uncivil Unrest" href="#" target="_blank">Uncivil Unrest</a> and <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Conclave Sledge-Captain" href="#" target="_blank">Conclave Sledge-Captain</a>. <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Uncivil Unrest" href="#" target="_blank">Uncivil Unrest</a> does a subtle impression of <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Rhythm of the Wild" href="#" target="_blank">Rhythm of the Wild</a>, but takes it a bit further and doubles the damage that creatures with +1/+1 counters deal. I think it definitely will be a chase card from the precon. <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Conclave Sledge-Captain" href="#" target="_blank">Conclave Sledge-Captain</a> is also great, with three instances of Backup allowing us to share its ability with up to three creatures or put three +1/+1 counters on the Sledge-Captain itself, making it a powerhouse!
Lastly I want to talk about <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Mirror-Style Master" href="#" target="_blank">Mirror-Style Master</a>. The attack trigger makes this card a commanding presence in the red zone. In addition to that attack trigger it has Backup, empowering your board even further. These new cards are just a force to be reckoned with, so keep your eye on them. 
<h2>Final Thoughts</h2>
So what do I think of the Call for Backup Commander deck? It definitely is going to have a dynamic effect in pods, so much so that I will definitely build Bright-Palm myself! This deck has two commanders that people will be playing for a long time to come.

The release of Outsiders brought a needed rejuvenation of limited play to Flesh and Blood. Experienced TCG players will be familiar with the basic aspects of Sealed play, but Flesh and Blood offers several unique elements you’ll need to be familiar with to succeed.
<h2>Sealed Format</h2>
Limited play experiences remain some of the most popular in the TCG space. I know plenty of players who only come out to play their game of choice when a new set releases, so they can experience the joys of cracking packs and building a deck in a more equitable format.
Here’s what to expect at a Sealed event near you.

First, you’ll receive six unopened booster packs. The tournament organizer will have all the players open their packs at a designated time. At this point, you’ll have a five-minute period to “open and observe” your cards. 
Note: Any needed token-rarity cards can be provided to you by the tournament organizers.
If you're at a higher-tier organized play event, you may be required to register your card pool — this is a simple enough process. You’ll swap card pools with the player on the opposite side of the table from you. Each player then records every card in their received collection. Registering your card pool also require players to decide which available hero they’ll play for the entirety of the event.
<h3>Deck Construction</h3>
In Sealed, the minimum required deck size is 30 cards (this does not include your young hero or equipment) — there is no maximum deck size.
As you sift through your six packs, sort them into piles based on each card’s class affiliation. For Outsiders, that means you’ll have the following piles:

Most of the time, you’ll want to go with the class you have the most cards for. Outsiders is unique in Flesh and Blood in that there are two heroes from each class to choose from. Before making your hero selection, you’ll want to examine the pitch value spread of your pool.
For example, suppose you have more Ranger cards than any other class, but almost all your arrow attack action cards are blue. In that case, you may want to consider non-Ranger heroes — blue-pitch arrows have lower attack values than their red counterparts, so you may not be able to present enough damage over the course of the game to win.
<h3>Generic Card Pool</h3>
There are some fantastic generic cards to choose from in this set, like <a href="https://fabrec.gg/cards/humble-red">Humble</a>, <a href="https://fabrec.gg/cards/wreck-havoc-red">Wreck Havoc</a>, <a href="https://fabrec.gg/cards/cut-down-to-size-blue">Cut Down to Size</a>, <a href="https://fabrec.gg/cards/ravenous-rabble-yellow">Ravenous Rabble</a>, and <a href="https://fabrec.gg/cards/seek-horizon-blue">Seek Horizon</a>.

Some of the attacks offer devastating hit effects. Each of these attacks forces the opponent to block or face some nasty consequences. Cut Down to Size, in particular, is a must-block attack. However the opponent chooses to deal with it, they will be without at least one card for their offensive retaliation.

While other attacks offer opportunities to stretch out the combat chain and keep the opponent on their heels, the red-pitch versions of <a href="https://fabrec.gg/cards/ravenous-rabble-red">Ravenous Rabble</a> and <a href="https://fabrec.gg/cards/seek-horizon-red">Seek Horizon</a> are two consistent ways for any hero to have go again when attacking while pushing the break-point attack value of four.
<h2>How to Select an Outsiders Hero in Sealed</h2>
As I mentioned above, Outsiders features six young heroes for Limited play. Once you’ve established which class you’ll have the best chance of putting together 30 or more cards with, you’ll be faced with one more choice.
Let your card pool guide you. If you pull a piece of Legendary equipment or a high-powered card like red <a href="https://fabrec.gg/cards/death-touch-red">Death Touch</a>, your six packs may just take one decision off your hands.
<h3>Assassin</h3>
Selecting between <a href="https://fabrec.gg/hero/uzuri">Uzuri</a> or <a href="https://fabrec.gg/hero/arakni-solitary-confinement">Arakni, Solitary Confinement</a> comes down to the number and pitch value of your Assassin cards with the keyword Stealth.

Arakni prefers more red-pitch Stealth attacks since the first Stealth attack they play each turn gains go again — allowing you to attack an additional time. You’ll want plenty of blues for this hero, too, in order to reliably attack with your daggers throughout each game.
Uzuri doesn’t care as much what pitch value her Stealth attacks hold. Blue is best since when she activates her ability, the Stealth card goes to the bottom of your deck — leaving you with plenty of resources in the second cycle of your deck.
Note: Since each dual-class category includes the Assassin class, it is more likely that you’ll receive a high amount of Assassin cards in your Sealed pool.
<h3>Ninja</h3>
With the Ninja class, you’ll automatically gain what could be the greatest Limited-format weapon in Flesh and Blood — the <a href="https://fabrec.gg/cards/harmonized-kodachi">Harmonized Kodachi</a>.

Choosing between <a href="https://fabrec.gg/hero/katsu">Katsu</a> and <a href="https://fabrec.gg/hero/benji-the-piercing-wind">Benji</a> can be as simple as examining your attack action cards again. Benji prefers attacks with a base value of one or two. Keep in mind Benji’s synchronization with low-value attacks makes several blue and yellow attack actions much more valuable.

If you have a large generic pool and plenty of zero-cost cards, you may consider Katsu. The zero-cost cards will let you swing with two Harmonized Kodachis and at least one attack nearly every turn.
<h3>Ranger</h3>
<a href="https://fabrec.gg/hero/azalea">Azalea</a> may have just become the darling of the Outsiders era of Flesh and Blood. She has a powerful ability for Limited play with a chance to give an arrow Dominate. Since players start with 20 or fewer health points, pushing unblockable damage at key points in a match could be a deciding factor.

On the other hand, <a href="https://fabrec.gg/hero/riptide">Riptide</a> brings a unique ability of his own. He can place a card into the arsenal zone (assuming it’s empty) whenever he plays a card from his hand. With the card being placed into the arsenal face down, he can follow up this play by adding an aim counter to an arrow with <a href="https://fabrec.gg/cards/barbed-castaway">Barbed Castaway</a>.

<h2>Sealed Gameplay</h2>
Early Outsiders Sealed events worldwide have shown that including more than 30 cards in your deck is an effective strategy. Doing so increases your chances of not falling to fatigue — a common phrase in the community when a player runs out of cards in their deck. While not an auto-loss, running out of or low on cards means you can’t block, attack, or pay for your weapons.
Your deck’s strategy will mainly depend on your card pool. Take note of your most powerful red attacks. These attacks may represent your most consistent win conditions. You’ll want to avoid blocking with these attacks, and you may want to pitch them as resources if you see them in the first few hands.

Beginner’s Guide to Outsiders Sealed - Flesh and Blood

Hello, fellow brewer, and welcome back to Brew for your Buck, where we swap out the top 10 most expensive cards in a deck with 10 budget cards that add a unique twist. Until now we've looked at a lot of different two-color decks, in part because as we add colors the most expensive cards tend to just be the mana base, which for us creates a weird dynamic for removing and adding cards. Based on your feedback, we're going to switch it up a bit. We'll only look at the top ten nonland cards going forward, trusting you to adjust your mana base as needed for your budget and deck functionality. I'll include "additional savings" from the mana base after the list of cuts just so it's clear.
With that out of the way, let's move on to today's deck. My favorite way to play Magic besides Commander is Limited. I started my foray into drafting back in the Scars of Mirrodin block, and yes, I forced Infect until I didn't, then 3-0'd the FNM with a red-white beatdown deck. After Scars block, something happened that is now mythical in the annals of Limited: triple Innistrad draft. And within that format was one of the most famous Limited decks of all time. Shadows Over Innistrad: Remastered kind of brought it to Arena, but we are bringing it to Commander. Yes, dear reader, today's budget package is the <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Spider Spawning" href="#" target="_blank">Spider Spawning</a> deck, shoehorned into an existing Commander deck as a tribute to the fun I had all those years ago.
Fortunately, we have a perfect commander to do this: <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Sidisi, Brood Tyrant" href="#" target="_blank">Sidisi, Brood Tyrant</a>. Sidisi is all about getting creatures in the 'yard, which happens to be perfect for <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Spider Spawning" href="#" target="_blank">Spider Spawning</a>. Being in Sultai also allows us to play all of the cards we need for <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Spider Spawning" href="#" target="_blank">Spider Spawning</a> and its myriad of friends that made the 40-card deck pop.

Looking at the average list on EDHREC, the deck clocks in at $367.40. As expected, seven of the top 10 most expensive cards are lands. Taking out that many without replacing them with basics or other budget lands would probably be catastrophic in a deck looking to mill itself, so as mentioned before we're going to look at the top 10 nonlands to remove:

<h3>The Trinity</h3>
To start off, we know we're adding <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Spider Spawning" href="#" target="_blank">Spider Spawning</a> ($0.11), it's the namesake card of the deck. In Innistrad Limited there were other key cards needed to infinitely loop it. One reason why the deck was so silly is because a lot of these cards would be close to last picks since they really didn't do much in any other draft deck. These were <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Runic Repetition" href="#" target="_blank">Runic Repetition</a> ($0.02) and <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Memory&#039;s Journey" href="#" target="_blank">Memory&#039;s Journey</a> ($0.15). Once you were down to only a few cards left in the deck, you could use <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Memory&#039;s Journey" href="#" target="_blank">Memory&#039;s Journey</a> to shuffle <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Spider Spawning" href="#" target="_blank">Spider Spawning</a> and <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Runic Repetition" href="#" target="_blank">Runic Repetition</a> back into your deck, then use <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Runic Repetition" href="#" target="_blank">Runic Repetition</a> to put <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Memory&#039;s Journey" href="#" target="_blank">Memory&#039;s Journey</a> back into your hand and repeat to make unlimited Spiders.

<h3>Classic Support</h3>
Some of the classic support cards for the draft deck are already in our list, like <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Deranged Assistant" href="#" target="_blank">Deranged Assistant</a> and <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Splinterfright" href="#" target="_blank">Splinterfright</a>, but we have a few more classics to add. <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Gnaw to the Bone" href="#" target="_blank">Gnaw to the Bone</a> ($0.12) keeps you alive as you mill yourself towards that state of bliss, and while we have plenty of ways to mill ourselves, <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Selhoff Occultist" href="#" target="_blank">Selhoff Occultist</a> ($0.07) goes into overdrive in Commander, with more players at the table, creature tokens (like the Zombies that Sidisi makes) dying, and board wipes flying around.

<h3>Best Impressions</h3>
The decks that really got to pop off had multiple copies of the key cards. Well, we can't do that in Commander, but thankfully we've been to Innistrad three times (as of 2023), so we can look to the sister sets for redundancy. Midnight Hunt and Crimson Vow tried to capture the nostalgia, like we're doing today, bringing us <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Vilespawn Spider" href="#" target="_blank">Vilespawn Spider</a>, <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Rootcoil Creeper" href="#" target="_blank">Rootcoil Creeper</a>, and <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Turn the Earth" href="#" target="_blank">Turn the Earth</a>. <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Vilespawn Spider" href="#" target="_blank">Vilespawn Spider</a> is already in the deck, which really threw me for a loop as to why the card it pays homage to isn't. <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Rootcoil Creeper" href="#" target="_blank">Rootcoil Creeper</a> ($0.07) is not in the deck, but it is a great addition, being a mana dork to get us to Sidisi early and acting as a one-shot <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Runic Repetition" href="#" target="_blank">Runic Repetition</a>. <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Turn the Earth" href="#" target="_blank">Turn the Earth</a> ($0.13) is essentially <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Memory&#039;s Journey" href="#" target="_blank">Memory&#039;s Journey</a> with some extra flexibility and lifegain thrown in.

<h3>Commanding Shifts</h3>
Okay, okay, I know we can't only jam Limited cards into the deck, so the last few cards are proof that I am not lost in a Bruce Springsteen song. This is Commander, after all, and there are some sweet additions that can supplement our Limited dreams. <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Mausoleum Secrets" href="#" target="_blank">Mausoleum Secrets</a> ($0.84) is one of my favorite tutors on a budget, and this is a perfect home for it. It can find 31 of the cards in our deck for two mana at instant speed, making it a really powerful tutor for us. In a similar vein, <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Songs of the Damned" href="#" target="_blank">Songs of the Damned</a> ($0.78) can give us a huge burst of mana, again at instant speed to fuel a big turn. Finally, the newly reprinted <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Oversold Cemetery" href="#" target="_blank">Oversold Cemetery</a> ($0.47) will let us grab a key creature out of our graveyard. Most of the time we want them to stay in there, but with all the milling we're doing, this card can act more like card draw than recursion.
