Altering cards with custom art is an expression of devotion in the purest form, both in devotion to the new art and to the game. This is especially true of Magic: The Gathering, a card game that has taken the concept of personalizing one's deck to new extremes these past few years.
For many, altering cards is a pastime meant to show their love of something. For others, it's a means to earn some money. But whatever that reason is, there are people in the Magic community who truly know what they're doing here.
Enter Eric Klug (also known as Klug Alters), who is, perhaps, the most well-known Magic card alterist in the field. His custom-altered cards often go on auction and sell for amounts in the thousands. This is partly due to his handiwork and perhaps the subject matter. But a lot of it seems to be based around the brand he's created for himself with past work.

We got a chance to conduct an exclusive interview with Eric and get his perspective on his career and the game as it evolves.
<h2>Interview With Eric Klug</h2>
This question is one that's probably on most people's minds right now, reading this (and it's certainly that for me): How do you get such fine brush strokes on your alters? What types of brushes do you use to achieve this level of detail?
This is the sort of question I don’t have an easy or canned answer for. I’ve been making art my entire life (I’m 39), and have been painting alters for 17 years. I’ve certainly put my 10,000 hours in. So a lot of the technique is just muscle memory at this point. Producing smooth, extremely clean work is about slowly and meticulously “building up the painting.” 
I think where a lot of painters run into trouble is trying to rush or render out things too quickly, and you end up with a painting that looks rushed.
What drew you specifically to Magic as a medium for your art? How has altering Magic cards bolstered your connection with the game?
I discovered painted alters on an online forum in 2008, and being a long-time Magic player and artist, I instantly wanted to give it a go. I actually preferred to work in dry mediums back then, and wasn’t much of a painter at all. I had an art degree, but still had to teach myself how to alter. 
Granted, I had already done a lot of painting for fun and in art school. 
 
I’ve played Magic for more than 25 years and have altered full-time since 2011. To have Magic intertwined in both my professional and personal life means I’m deeply and forever connected to the game.

How do you determine what art you use for each of your alters? Is it a commissioner's decision, or do you have full liberty? Also, was there anyone particularly surprising who commissioned a piece from you?
I stopped taking commissions three years ago, after the birth of my daughter. Since resuming work, I’ve switched to producing work on my own and auctioning those pieces. When I took commissions, the client would come to me with a concept, and we would work out what that would look like. 
Brandon Sanderson is someone who contacted me back then to have work done for his incredible cube. 
 
For my own pieces, I spend a ton of time brainstorming concepts. Sometimes there’s a reference I want to use, and I need to figure out a card it would work on. Sometimes there’s a card I want to paint on, and I try to think of how I could transform it. I’ve spent full work days just framing ideas and not painting at all. 
<h2>Eric Klug, on His Process and Background</h2>
Do you have a formal background in the arts, or are you self-trained?
I graduated from the Corcoran College of Art &amp; Design in 2008, so I have a Fine Arts degree. That said, I’ve been drawing since I can remember. In 1st grade, my friend would write comic books and I would illustrate them, then we would try and sell them on the playground. 
So it’s safe to say I’ve spent much of my life honing my craft. 
What would you say is the biggest breakthrough you've had in the process of altering a card?
When painted alters were fairly new to Magic, they were mostly border extensions of the original art or small character paintings over the original art. Nothing too ambitious. About midway through 2011, the year I started altering full-time, I slowly came to realize alters could be so much grander, and something really sparked. 
I felt, and continue to feel, really inspired to innovate how I approach alter work.

What was the biggest lesson you've learned while altering a card?
I remember painting the Gandalf <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Snapcaster Mage" href="#" target="_blank">Snapcaster Mage</a> (pictured below). I wanted to do an extremely detailed, realistic portrait of Ian McKellen’s portrayal from the Lord of the Rings movies. I decided I was just going to take my time with it and give the painting as long as it needed. Up to that point, it was one of my more ambitious pieces, and the results showed.

It taught me to give the painting as long as it needs. Acclaimed artist James Gurney (of the Dinotopia books) made this great tweet in 2021: 
<blockquote>We often hear the advice: 'Stop before you overwork it.' But in my experience, more paintings fail from quitting too soon than from beating them to death.</blockquote>
That is just amazing advice for any budding artist, and I try to remember it when I’m eager for a piece to be complete that still has a ways to go.
<h2>On His Favorite Artwork</h2>
Of all the non-alter artwork you've done, what's your favorite? And, do you have a favorite alter? 
 
I’ve painted many plein air landscapes over the years, and they mean a lot to me. These are works that are painted outside on location, working rather quickly. They’re not the most acclaimed, and I wasn’t paid to make any of them, but there’s a purity in that I painted them just as a meditation and for my own enjoyment. 
I also appreciate that their creation was the complete opposite of my alter work; I’d typically work for two hours versus the 40-60 that I might put into a card.

I don’t pick favorites! I’ll include some images of a few that come to mind, though.
Have you ever rejected a commission? Why? 
 
Lots of times! When I first started, I painted just about anything that wasn’t offensive because I wanted to build a brand and make a living. But as business got better, I was quickly inundated with requests. I couldn’t serve everyone and didn’t want the pressure of having a massive backlog, so I continually booked out just a month of work at a time. That meant being fairly picky in terms of what I took on.
Ultimately, I don’t take on commissions anymore because I was spending an incredible amount of time answering requests and planning projects with clients. Producing work solely for auction isn’t completely ideal. I enjoyed getting to bring other people's ideas to life, but it has allowed me far more time to just paint.
<h2>On Prospects and the Future of Altering Cards</h2>
Has Wizards of the Coast ever proactively reached out to you about doing art for them? Alternatively, have you ever reached out to them with a similar proposition? 
 
They haven’t. I think I may have submitted a portfolio to a faceless Dropbox many years ago, but never heard anything. If it happened, that would be cool, but I also like the niche I’ve made in the community.

In a post-Secret Lair, post-Universes Beyond age, what is your view on alters as a niche within Magic? Is the demand shifting at all?
I think Secret Lair and UB content is, at least in part, a fairly overt response to alters. And that’s because Magic players love to express themselves via their card choices. Think about how much time players have put into selecting their basic lands - even at the competitive level.
I think alters have a leg up because they’re one-of-a-kind, made by hand. There’s something just magic about that, if you’ll excuse the pun.

From the Altar of the Alterist: An Exclusive Interview With Eric Klug

MagicCon Atlanta 2025 promises to be another smash hit for industry professionals and Magic players alike. This year, Space Cow Media CTO and Archidekt founder <a href="https://mcatlanta.mtgfestivals.com/en-us/experience/panels-and-events/panel-information.html?gtID=909459&amp;panel-name=Solving-Spellify-The-EDHREC-Guessing-Game" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Andy Grimm Cassidy will be on stage alongside JMarGameDesign to talk Spellify</a>, EDHREC's card guessing game, and plans for future games coming to EDHREC.
I interviewed Andy at MagicCon Vegas 2025 to get his perspective on working alongside friends to create <a href="https://archidekt.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Archidekt</a>, a premier deckbuilder and collection tracker, as well as integrating into the <a href="https://spacecowmedia.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Space Cow Media</a> company galaxy.
<h2>The Beginning of Something Magical</h2>
LAS VEGAS - You wouldn’t know Andy Grimm Cassidy is the founder of Archidekt, a deckbuilding platform for Magic: The Gathering, if you walked by him at a MagicCon. But you know his site, and most recently, you know Archidekt’s banners posted at the event’s artist area, promoting the most recent of a litany of new features added to the site regularly.
But Grimm Cassidy, 29, has had an influence on how the greater Magic community conducts deckbuilding; and that influence is something he and his team take very seriously.
Grimm Cassidy hails from Buffalo, New York, a city he describes with affection. “Buffalo is the City of Good Neighbors,” he said. “A lot of that comes from digging each other out from piles of snow.” He might not outwardly acknowledge it, but there’s a Rust Belt, Midwestern mentality that puts community first, and it has shaped Grimm Cassidy's approach to Archidekt from its nascency.
His first Commander was <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Rhys the Redeemed" href="#" target="_blank">Rhys the Redeemed</a>, converting a nostalgic 60-card Elf deck - the first deck he piloted that actually managed to beat his older brothers in the early 2000s - into a beloved Commander deck he still has to this day.
 “We got back into it, I was like, ‘oh, Rhys is a legendary creature. I used to love this card. I'll just make this into an Elf deck,’” he said. “I just remember the first Commander game we played, we just had this board state where everyone had so much stuff, and I had 18 Elves on the board. And I was like, ‘this is the best format of Magic possible.’ Like, this is beautiful. And that's what got us hooked again.”
<h2>Building Archidekt</h2>
But Andy isn't only a Magic player. He's also a builder, in every sense of the word. Archidekt started during his college years at the University of Buffalo, following conversations between him and a group of software-engineering peers who were dissatisfied with existing deckbuilding websites. 
“We (had) just graduated, so everyone had a bunch of free time, and obviously we wanted to share the decks online and stuff. Our big option at the time was TappedOut,” he said. “Now we have a bunch of fresh software engineers with new ideas looking at this relic of a website, and the tipping point was one of my friends had found a bug. He had reached out to the TappedOut folks, and they had been (dismissive). So a bunch of us got together and were just talking about the possibility of making something better.”
That interaction inspired Grimm Cassidy and his friend Mike Drewitt to create their own alternative.
Initially, he considered Archidekt merely a personal tool. 
“In my brain, I was just building it for our friend group,” he said. “Mike said he always had the sense from the beginning it could become a business. I don't know if that's revisionist or not, but I definitely didn't suspect it would be a business until we did our official release on Reddit.”
The public launch brought both humbling critiques and a rush of enthusiasm, with commenters pointing out aspects of the platform that could be improved. But the positivity far outweighed the criticism, giving him and Drewitt the momentum needed to keep going. 
“The big things that I didn't have a lot of experience with before Archidekt were UI design and user experience,” he said. “Maybe some time we’ll dredge up the original code, to look at the original iteration of Archidekt. There are a lot of unintuitive things. We were just green software engineers that just got out of college.”
<h2>Community-Forward</h2>
While Grimm Cassidy and Drewitt learned on the fly, the site quickly gathered a dedicated user base. They found managing community feedback rewarding, yet demanding. “We very quickly added a forum and a Discord so people could provide feedback. It adds a level of work,” Grimm Cassidy said. “But that's exactly what we wanted; we wanted to have this community-driven development.”
Andy attributed Archidekt’s growing popularity to its unique appeal: a tactile, visual approach. “What was important to us was to give it the feel of laying out your cards on a playmat,” he said. 
This tactile experience has become the platform’s defining trait, deeply resonating with Commander enthusiasts who look for their deckbuilding platform to mimic the feeling of constructing a deck on a desk or kitchen table.
<h2>Finding the Space Cow Media Galaxy</h2>
A crucial turning point came with their integration with EDHREC, a symbiotic partnership beneficial for both sites that began as a data-sharing association. EDHREC founder <a href="https://www.linkedin.com/in/donaldminer/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Don Miner</a> even approached Grimm Cassidy early on in Archidekt’s life, offering to buy the burgeoning website outright. 
Fresh out of college and living with his parents, Grimm Cassidy turned down the tempting offer. “I could wait him out. I was having fun, so I could just continue on with that. And Don was obviously very understanding,” he said. “His policy is always just to help everyone in the Magic community out. It builds (the community) up, and you end up with these partners that have good will towards you.”
His patience paid off. Archidekt grew steadily, gaining popularity and financial viability. When the COVID pandemic hit, after a brief uncertainty, the site experienced significant and rapid growth as people turned to Magic, and specifically Commander, as an outlet during lockdowns and social distancing.
 Eventually, Grimm Cassidy and Miner revisited their partnership, merging Archidekt with EDHREC under the Space Cow Media banner. “The sign of a good merger is that when you look back, everyone's happy,” Grimm Cassidy said. “And everyone's happy.”
<h2>Archidekt's Future Past</h2>
Grimm Cassidy’s long-term vision for Archidekt remains community-focused. “It’s just a matter of responding to the community and constantly improving our craft,” he said. For him, the project embodies dedication and continuous evolution.
Some of the more broad-reaching impacts on the community Archidekt has had weren't things he expected when beginning to craft what grew to become the site today. “The way Magic players now interact as a community has so much to do with how they brew decks and how they share decks,” he said.
And with the recent implementation of <a href="https://edhrec.com/articles/edhrec-guide-to-commander-brackets" target="_blank" rel="noopener">the Bracket System</a>, there's an increased need for documentation - of Commander decks and the cards each deck contains.
 “There now needs to be an understanding of ‘What combos are in my deck?’ You know, ‘How many <a href="https://edhrec.com/top/game-changers" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Game Changers</a>? How many extra turns?’ There's just this increasing need for documentation as the game grows larger,” said Grimm Cassidy. “There are just so many cards to search through. It’s tough to build Commander decks without tools now. So it's interesting that now we've become a part of this community. In a way, it's gratifying, for sure, and also sometimes humbling, because there's some responsibility.” 
Nearly a decade later, Grimm Cassidy reflected on seeing the Archidekt banner at the largest Magic event of the year. “That logo is something that I just made in some image editor eight years ago. That font is just a Google font that I picked, that I thought looked good. But that's not something anyone walking by would know,” he said.

 “It's a weird disconnect to me; this is something so personal. I personally dragged the lines to make it, but it’s now something that people just walk by at a convention, and it's just another thing.” 
The banners bring up a mixture of emotions for Andy. “It's gratifying, it's humbling, and also has that weird kind of disconnect. There’s a lot of personal connection and a lot of personal meaning behind these projects. They're not just like faceless websites,” he said. “And that's one of the most gratifying things about this job. You are not often, as a software engineer, both the user and the developer. But for pretty much everything we work on at Space Cow, we are both, which is so much fun.
<h2>Spellify at MagicCon Atlanta 2025</h2>
And now, Andy Grimm Cassidy's work alongside Archidekt developer Ben helped launch an addicting card guessing game, Spellify.
