On Friday, October 9th, during New York Comic-Con, Wizards of the Coast revealed Marvel: Darkhold Destiny, the next Marvel-centered expansion set for Magic: The Gathering. Featuring a smattering of the magical parts of the Marvel universe, Darkhold Destiny centers around a story original to Magic. So get ready, everybody: It's time for a mystical, Marvel-ous new Universes Beyond reveal!

Darkhold Destiny Details

There's not a lot to go off of right now, as it's too soon for detailed story beats at this time. However, Marvel: Darkhold Destiny appears to have a fully original narrative. What this implies is that Marvel's creative team actively worked with Wizards of the Coast on a new storyline. It is also confirmed that Marvel will have a comic series to tie into this set. That's extremely exciting in itself, even if you're not a fan of Universes Beyond's mixing of peanut butter with chocolate, so to speak!
What we do know about the story is that it features Thor, Doctor Strange, Scarlet Witch, Moon Knight, Blade, and various other magically inclined heroes and villains of the Marvel universe. While that's a relatively broad spectrum of characters to pull from, we can, at the very least, infer from the information provided at NYCC that Thor and Doctor Strange are at the heart of this story. Hela and Dormammu appear to be central antagonists, so that would track.

Notably, Hela, Mistress of Darkness seems to bring with her a new sorcery type known as Vengeance. Vengeance spells can only be cast from the graveyard and are exiled after being cast. How cool!
Finally, we see more Arcane spells in this set, such as Hela's Arcanum, for example. There is no confirmation at this time whether those modal effects will be on all the Arcane spells in the set, but that's currently on the table as a possibility.

Commander Decks

There are going to be four Commander decks included in the Darkhold Destiny release. The decks are:

Strange Academy ()

Gods of Asgard ()

Midnight Sons ()

Lords of Hel ()

You can see the box art for the four preconstructed decks in the image below!

Marvel: Darkhold Destiny Sets a New Precedent for Universes Beyond

This is a new Universes Beyond set with a completely original storyline to the property Magic is crossing over with. As such, it sets a whole new precedent with regard to the capabilities of the Universes Beyond initiative as a whole. Imagine, if you will, a set placed within the 41st Millennium of Warhammer 40,000 where the story is fresh and new, and exclusive to Magic: The Gathering. Or, perhaps, a Star Trek voyage that's just as exclusive. A Doctor Who story, an episode of SpongeBob SquarePants, or any other possibility we can come up with at the moment. In short, this exercise is a big one for Wizards of the Coast to undertake!
But for now, we will cut the speculation and let you answer for us, dear readers. What do you think of Marvel: Darkhold Destiny so far, given what little we know? Sound off in the comments below!
