When it comes to the legend this deck is built around, he can be found in the art for "Crack the Plates": it's none other than <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Thorin, King of Durin&#039;s Folk" href="#" target="_blank">Thorin, King of Durin&#039;s Folk</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>.</p>
<p>This commander wants you to flood the board with Dwarves and Treasures, which is exactly the kind of <em>flavor </em><em>win</em> that I'm looking for from our return to Middle-earth.</p>

<p>My name is <a href="https://linktr.ee/pillowfortmtg">Tyler 'Savesya' Bucks</a>, and today we're going to be looking at a Bracket 2 deck that you can pick up for about $35 (using TCGPlayer pricing). I don't know how much this commander will cost as a single card at the time of writing this, so that budget is only based off of the 99. With all that said, let's get into it by taking a look at the legend who's leading this list!</p>
<h2>What Does Thorin Bring to the Table?</h2>

<p>When <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Thorin, King of Durin&#039;s Folk" href="#" target="_blank">Thorin, King of Durin&#039;s Folk</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> appeared on my screen during <em>The Hobbit</em> preview panel, I was immediately invested! His combination of abilities really struck a chord with me, since it offers up mana advantage and a way to close out the game. I also enjoy the play pattern it pushes you towards, where you want to store up your Treasure tokens in order to hit hard, instead of just spending all of them right away.</p>
<p>So, as I put this deck together, I pulled from <em>Magic's</em> history in order to make this list as well-rounded as possible. However, since we're still in preview season, be sure to keep an eye out for some of the new Dwarves that are being revealed from the upcoming set, that way they can be tossed right into this list. Now it's time to get into the deck by meeting seven very important members of the team.</p>
<h2>Introducing the Seven Dwarves</h2>

<p>The first creatures that popped into my head when this commander was revealed were the <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Seven Dwarves" href="#" target="_blank">Seven Dwarves</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, and I did everything in my power to keep them in this deck. Since Thorin buffs up the power of your Dwarves, and these increase each other's stats, they scale incredibly well with the game.</p>
<p>There were a few moments where I had to make some difficult cuts, but these little two-drops stayed together all the way to the end!</p>
<h2>Bursts of Treasures &amp; Overruns</h2>

This can truly help you pull a victory together out of nowhere and performed incredibly well in my test games.</li>
<li><span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Brass&#039;s Bounty" href="#" target="_blank">Brass&#039;s Bounty</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>: This is a spell that really shows off the power of this deck, since you can cast it before combat, deal a bunch of damage when you attack, and then utilize those Treasures to play some spells from your hand in order to keep pushing your advantage forward.</li>
<li><span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Inspired Tinkering" href="#" target="_blank">Inspired Tinkering</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>: Here's a card that's great when you're ahead or behind, since it ramps you, gives you access to more options and builds up the power of your board by +3/+0. Whether you're looking for damage or answers, this uncommon can help!</li>
</ul>
<div class="edhrecp__cards"><div class="edhrecp__card-container" name="Overwhelming Victory"></div><div class="edhrecp__card-container" name="Lorehold Charm"></div><div class="edhrecp__card-container" name="Heroic Charge"></div></div>

<li><span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Overwhelming Victory" href="#" target="_blank">Overwhelming Victory</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>: While it's possible to build up your board to have immense punching power, you will still need to get that damage through. So, having a way to buff up your Dwarves even more and give them trample is one of the main win conditions for this build.</li>
<li><span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Lorehold Charm" href="#" target="_blank">Lorehold Charm</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>: The modality that this spell brings to the table is great, it offers up recursion and removal, as well as that all-important trample for only two mana.</li>
<li><span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Heroic Charge" href="#" target="_blank">Heroic Charge</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>: This card also has a few routes to take when you play it. While you're most likely going to be kicking it, you can always just cast it for that base cost, in order to fortify your board a bit more during a key attack or block.</li>
</ul>
<h2>Seeing More Cards</h2>

<li><span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Depala, Pilot Exemplar" href="#" target="_blank">Depala, Pilot Exemplar</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>: While my version of the deck may not include any Vehicles, it's definitely filled to the brim with Dwarves who are ready to be found once Depala enters into combat.</li>
<li><span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Amber Gristle O&#039;Maul" href="#" target="_blank">Amber Gristle O&#039;Maul</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>: The usual play pattern with this deck is to nearly empty your hand onto the board in the first handful of turns, which is exactly when this legend will be moving to combat. So, there's a good chance that you may only be discarding two or fewer cards, while completely reloading to a full grip as you attack.</li>
<li><span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Giott, King of the Dwarves" href="#" target="_blank">Giott, King of the Dwarves</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>: If you want to see a whole lot of your deck as you play, then this creature can help with that. When you combine this with your commander, every Dwarf that enters will make you a Treasure and allow you to throw a card away in order to get a replacement; now that's a lot of game actions!</li>
</ul>
<div class="edhrecp__cards"><div class="edhrecp__card-container" name="Big Score"></div><div class="edhrecp__card-container" name="Borrowed Knowledge"></div><div class="edhrecp__card-container" name="Commune with Lava"></div></div>
<ul>
<li><span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Big Score" href="#" target="_blank">Big Score</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>: Here's a staple-level spell that gets even better in this list, because you'll gain access to two new cards, make a couple Treasures, and buff your board by +2/+0 all at the same time.</li>
<li><span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Borrowed Knowledge" href="#" target="_blank">Borrowed Knowledge</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>: This is one of my favorite uncommons from the year, and is so useful here. Whether you're stuck with a hand full of lands or someone else at the table is drawing ten cards per turn, this spell can help you get back into the game.</li>
<li><span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Commune with Lava" href="#" target="_blank">Commune with Lava</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>: If you get to a point in the match where you do have a stash of Treasure built up, but nothing to spend them on, then this X spell can be a perfect outlet for your mana. Casting it on the end step before your turn is super useful here, since you get to untap and utilize those cards right away.</li>
</ul>
<h2>Mana Ramp</h2>

Since <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Thorin, King of Durin&#039;s Folk" href="#" target="_blank">Thorin, King of Durin&#039;s Folk</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> powers up your team based off of how many artifact tokens you control, this could pull you to a win once you fill your board with <em>eight</em> Replicated Rings.</li>
<li><span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Diamond Pick-Axe" href="#" target="_blank">Diamond Pick-Axe</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>: This piece of Equipment is so useful for the list since you can get it down early, and start your stockpile of Treasures each time you move to combat.</li>
<li><span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Glóin, Dwarf Emissary" href="#" target="_blank">Glóin, Dwarf Emissary</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>: Here's a really thematic and synergistic inclusion for this deck. Not only does it add some more tokens as the game goes on, but it also gives them an additional use, since they can be traded in to goad some threats on your opponents' boards.</li>
</ul>
<h2>Synergistic Removal</h2>
<div class="edhrecp__cards"><div class="edhrecp__card-container" name="Shattered Acolyte"></div><div class="edhrecp__card-container" name="Fairgrounds Warden"></div><div class="edhrecp__card-container" name="Winnowing"></div></div>

<li><span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Shattered Acolyte" href="#" target="_blank">Shattered Acolyte</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>: I love when I get to work on a Typal deck, because it consistently makes me come to realizations like "oh, this is a Dwarf too?" Sure, removing a troublesome artifact or enchantment is great, but that lifelink is actually pretty useful here, since you could buff this creature's power and pad your life total when it deals damage.</li>
<li><span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Fairgrounds Warden" href="#" target="_blank">Fairgrounds Warden</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>: A creature that help you exile threats is always useful, but it's especially powerful here, since it'll come with a Treasure and the ability to beat down your opponents. That really does just add insult to injury.</li>
<li><span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Winnowing" href="#" target="_blank">Winnowing</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>: Board wipes that leave your side of the field untouched are always good, since they help clear the way for your creatures to swing on through. If you have this budget rare from <a href="https://edhrec.com/sets/ecl"><em>Lorwyn Eclipsed</em></a> sitting in your collect, then this is the kind of deck that it's been waiting for.</li>

<div><em>I have been a longtime reader of your column and I have a story that happened two weeks ago at my LGS that still sits a bit wrong with me, so I'd like your opinion on it. </em></div>

<div><em>It's the same ten faces at that LGS every week, so everybody knows everyone well. I'm one of the latest additions to that group and have not played against everyone there yet. I have two regular guys there that seem to enjoy playing with me, so I usually end up playing with them. That fateful day, one of the guys I had not played against yet sat down with us three to play. The other three all knew each other quite well. I was running a <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Saheeli, Radiant Creator" href="#" target="_blank">Saheeli, Radiant Creator</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> list and the "new" guy (let's call him Plato) was running <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Sokrates, Athenian Teacher" href="#" target="_blank">Sokrates, Athenian Teacher</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>. As soon as Plato unpacked his deck, my two regulars groaned. He started talking about how no one would deal combat damage this game, how we would all drown in our cards, and could do nothing about it. The others confirmed that it was rather bland to play against. I had no experience myself with him or his deck, so I was rather open-minded and curious what it could do. However, I noticed quickly that during the game, whenever his Sokrates was tapped or otherwise unavailable, he would be very vocal about how he should not be attacked because he "only wants us all to draw cards". Now, I love politics in my games, but playing the "to0 cute to be killed" meta game is a bit annoying in my book. Obviously, I am telling all this to justify what happened next.</em></div>

I copied the Pummeler and had about 10 energy lying around. Granted, the other players also had solid boards, but the defense strategy of "I draw us all cards, right?" had rubbed me the wrong way, so I declared attack on Plato. His Sokrates was tapped and he only had one other creature. He declared that he would not block, as he did not perceive it as a threat. Then both I and the two other players at the table all said that he should absolutely block because I had enough energy to just buff the Pummeler and kill him. He said that I would not dare to do that, because all he wanted was to draw cards. He also ignored our hint that the copy of Pummeler starts at 5/5. I then asked the guy next to me if I should do it and he said "do it for the plot", so I had my Pummeler copy become a 40/40 and kill Plato.</em></div>

<div><em>While the two other guys thought it was hilarious that I killed the guy notorious for not taking damage usually, Plato complained profusely and refused to play another game with me. He has since said that he will not play with me again, as he considers my behavior to be erratic.</em></div>

<div><em>Now I wonder, <strong>Am I the Bolas for doing something hilarious given a shared context between players that I am technically not part of, as I only recently joined the group? Or was what I did an act of unnecessary violence?</strong></em></div>

<p>I saw this one in my inbox, and while it's a fairly open/shut case, I picked it because somebody is slamming face with an <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Electrostatic Pummeler" href="#" target="_blank">Electrostatic Pummeler</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> in our year 2026. Can I get a "hell yeah" in the comments? My pals over at the <a href="https://www.youtube.com/@HerosBladeVibeCheck">Hero's Blade Vibe Check</a> podcast love to remind Commander players to respect the combat step and that not slamming creatures into the red zone is just leaving damage on the table.</p>
<p>While I can appreciate Plato's choice to really embody the character and sell the line of "we're all here to draw cards" (aka "to learn"), I don't think it's fair for him to throw his hands up and declare you "erratic". Everybody groaned when this deck came out, he had his commander tapped, he had a blocker, and he was minimizing his position as just a source of card draw. He remains an active moving part of this game and therefore a danger to your game plan. Attacking him is fair game. Enough time has gone by for you to get your commander out, the Pummeler, and ten energy, so we're cruising into a <a href="https://edhrec.com/guides/edhrec-guide-to-commander-brackets#what-does-a-bracket-x-deck-look-like-bracket-2-core">Bracket 3</a> mid-late game. This kill might have happened a little early for a Bracket 2 game, I'll give Plato that.</p>

<p>But come on. If you're sitting down to a game of <em>Magic</em>, you have to know that you're not going to get away with being "just a little guy" for too long. At a certain point, Plato will begin to tip the scales toward you or one of your other opponents in some way before he finds his wincon. <em>Magic</em>-players don't get to control other <em>Magic</em>-players unless they use a <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Mindslaver" href="#" target="_blank">Mindslaver</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> effect on another. While I think it's a little rash, Plato is totally within reason to not want to play against you again. I think it's ridiculous, if I'm being completely honest, but I need to mention that he has the right to refuse to play against someone.</p>
<p>You're not the Bolas for going for the kill in this position. Your threats need to mean something, for goodness sake. Not to mention, every sign in the context of the story basically goaded you to this decision. Why wouldn't you pump the Pumeler against the guy who's threatening to invalidate your combat damage, especially in a deck where you're making 5/5s with haste?</p>
