<p>For <span class="mana-container-container"><span class="mana-container"><i class="ms ms-cost ms-1" style="margin-left: inherit !important;"></i></span><span class="mana-container"><i class="ms ms-cost ms-u" style="margin-left: inherit !important;"></i></span><span class="mana-container"><i class="ms ms-cost ms-b" style="margin-left: inherit !important;"></i></span><span class="mana-container"><i class="ms ms-cost ms-r" style="margin-left: inherit !important;"></i></span></span>, <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="The Madcap Jester" href="#" target="_blank">The Madcap Jester</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> is a legendary 3/2 Clown Wizard creature with two triggered abilities. First, "Whenever The Madcap Jester attacks, each opponent exiles the top card of their library." <p>While these are two distinct abilities, the first really only makes sense in light of the second. In short, attacking with The Madcap Jester is best comparable to drawing three cards — a pretty sizable resource — although the cards you draw aren't from your own deck. Thankfully, that second triggered ability colorwashes (allows any color of mana to be paid) each card exiled. Facing down a pod of nothing but mono-green decks? <p>Cards in this bucket largely fall into two categories: spells that tutor cards from your opponents' decks, and cards that hit so many cards in one go that they're basically another copy of <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Ad Nauseam" href="#" target="_blank">Ad Nauseam</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>.</p>
<p>As for the first bucket, <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Extract" href="#" target="_blank">Extract</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> is about as clean an example as they come: for <span class="mana-container-container"><span class="mana-container"><i class="ms ms-cost ms-u" style="margin-left: inherit !important;"></i></span></span>, you get to search an opponent's library for a card and exile it. With The Madcap Jester in play, that's basically a cheaper <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Demonic Tutor" href="#" target="_blank">Demonic Tutor</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> that also colorwashes whatever you search for. Nothing like spending <span class="mana-container-container"><span class="mana-container"><i class="ms ms-cost ms-3" style="margin-left: inherit !important;"></i></span></span> on a <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Necropotence" href="#" target="_blank">Necropotence</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, rather than <span class="mana-container-container"><span class="mana-container"><i class="ms ms-cost ms-b" style="margin-left: inherit !important;"></i></span><span class="mana-container"><i class="ms ms-cost ms-b" style="margin-left: inherit !important;"></i></span><span class="mana-container"><i class="ms ms-cost ms-b" style="margin-left: inherit !important;"></i></span></span>.</p>
<p>Looking at the second bucket, the king of burst-exile is <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Tasha&#039;s Hideous Laughter" href="#" target="_blank">Tasha&#039;s Hideous Laughter</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>. For <span class="mana-container-container"><span class="mana-container"><i class="ms ms-cost ms-1" style="margin-left: inherit !important;"></i></span><span class="mana-container"><i class="ms ms-cost ms-u" style="margin-left: inherit !important;"></i></span><span class="mana-container"><i class="ms ms-cost ms-u" style="margin-left: inherit !important;"></i></span></span>, this sorcery has each opponent exile cards from the top of their library until they hit twenty mana's worth of cards exiled this way. With the run-of-the-mill cEDH deck having an average mana value close to two, Tasha's Hideous Laughter will routinely flip as many as thirty nonland cards once it resolves.</p>
<h3>Exile Engines</h3>

<p>Like all good cEDH decks these days, The Madcap Jester is also stuffed to the brim with its fair share of engines — <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Rhystic Study" href="#" target="_blank">Rhystic Study</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Mystic Remora" href="#" target="_blank">Mystic Remora</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, etc. Sprinkling in some extra synergy are these two exile-based engines: Ashiok effectively draws you three cards a turn thanks to that +2 loyalty ability, while Psychic Surgery allows you to command the table's tutoring efforts. (<em>If an opponent casts Mystical Tutor, for example, Psychic Surgery's exile effect will resolve after Mystical Tutor has placed a card on top of the now-shuffled library.)</em></p>
<h2>How Does <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="The Madcap Jester" href="#" target="_blank">The Madcap Jester</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> Win?</h2>
<h3>Grixis Good Stuff</h3>

<p>At the end of the day, The Madcap Jester is closing out games in the ways Grixis does best: through either an Underworld Breach pile or a Thassa's Oracle and an empty library. That said, the way it assembles those combos is what makes this deck unique.</p>
<p>First, tutors. Think of the one-off exile effects as a unique spin on traditional tutor effects. Every Grixis pile gets <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Vampiric Tutor" href="#" target="_blank">Vampiric Tutor</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Imperial Seal" href="#" target="_blank">Imperial Seal</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, etc., but not every Grixis pile gets Extract.</p>
<p>Second, the alt-<span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Ad Nauseam" href="#" target="_blank">Ad Nauseam</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> in the form of <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Tasha&#039;s Hideous Laughter" href="#" target="_blank">Tasha&#039;s Hideous Laughter</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>. Cards like Ad Nauseam and Necropotence are essentially win conditions in and of themselves, since they provide access to so many cards in a single burst. Tasha's Hideous Laughter is exactly the same thing, with the only caveat being that — every now and again — you will be facing down a deck with cards you can't make much use of. On the whole, however, that is usually balanced by having three opponents and playing in such a powerful set of colors.</p>

<h2>Wrap Up</h2>
<p>At its core, <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="The Madcap Jester" href="#" target="_blank">The Madcap Jester</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> is a midrange Grixis list whose commander supports a few extra tutors and a potentially better <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Ad Nauseam" href="#" target="_blank">Ad Nauseam</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> (at the very least, it won't lose you any life). If that doesn't sound like the makings of a pretty viable cEDH deck, then I don't know what does.</p>


The Madcap Jester | Building for cEDH

<p>Hello, everyone, my name's Jonathan and today I'll be going over <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Uugguu, the Omniplasm" href="#" target="_blank">Uugguu, the Omniplasm</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, one of the commanders spoiled for the expansion <em>Mystery Booster Commander Edition</em>.</p>

<h2>The Commander</h2>
<div class="edhrecp__cards"><div class="edhrecp__card-container" name="Uugguu, the Omniplasm"></div></div>
<p>This commander gets more interesting the more you look at it. On the surface it's just an Ooze general, which is something we were still missing but not anything groundbreaking. But then, the subthemes start to emerge, spanning from <a href="https://edhrec.com/tags/tokens">Tokens</a> to <a href="https://edhrec.com/tags/sacrifice">Sacrifice</a> and <a href="https://edhrec.com/tags/reanimator">Reanimation</a>. And just like that, a pretty generic commander becomes intriguing and open to multiple builds.</p>
<p>Today, I'll be going over my first draft for this deck, but then I'll be highlighting alternative options that people have started brewing. In this way you'll have a broader overview of what the possibilities are with this card as we wait for its release.</p>
<hr />
<h2>The Creatures</h2>
<div class="edhrecp__cards"><div class="edhrecp__card-container" name="Biowaste Blob"></div><div class="edhrecp__card-container" name="Mitotic Slime"></div><div class="edhrecp__card-container" name="Acidic Slime"></div></div>
<p>The pool of available Ooze creatures is surprisingly deep, to the point that it's possible to actually select the ones you're including in your deck (and this can't be said for every creature type). In fact, before even starting to talk about subthemes, there are quite a few cards that are simply good with the commander.</p>
<p>Starting with an oldie, <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Biowaste Blob" href="#" target="_blank">Biowaste Blob</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> has finally found a stable home. During each of your turns it'll propagate and grow your entire board, but this is old news. What's interesting now is how well it synergizes with <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Uugguu, the Omniplasm" href="#" target="_blank">Uugguu, the Omniplasm</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, to the point that it might as well gain hexproof. In fact, killing it won't stop the chain of creatures, but rather increase even more its growing speed.</p>
<p>Next is <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Mitotic Slime" href="#" target="_blank">Mitotic Slime</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, another card that usually struggles outside dedicated token decks. Nonetheless, the number of creatures it can create with this new general is simply outrageous, giving an enormous boost to any creatures-matter card we have.</p>
<p>Lastly, <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Acidic Slime" href="#" target="_blank">Acidic Slime</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> is the first card I thought about when crafting the deck list. It's way too expensive for a removal spell in modern <em>Magic</em>, I know. But when you can get its effect <em>three</em> times, even the 2/2 stat line isn't that bad after all.</p>

<h2>+1/+1 Counters</h2>

<p>One of the secondary themes I decided to include in my list is +1/+1 counters, which pairs well with the go-wide idea present both in our commander and a decent amount of other creatures. Also, keep in mind our goal is to get two copies of each of the creatures we play.</p>
<p>We will start with <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Oran-Rief Ooze" href="#" target="_blank">Oran-Rief Ooze</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, which will grow our board turn after turn. This is because we can attack with it recklessly as long as <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Uugguu, the Omniplasm" href="#" target="_blank">Uugguu, the Omniplasm</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> is on the battlefield to get both of its triggered abilities going.</p>
<p><span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Aeve, Progenitor Ooze" href="#" target="_blank">Aeve, Progenitor Ooze</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> was the previous Ooze commander, although with a storm flavor. Here it can simply be a huge creature, splitting into more copies of itself both with storm <em>and</em> our commander.</p>
<p>On a similar note, <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Biogenic Ooze" href="#" target="_blank">Biogenic Ooze</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> benefits from being copied too. It'll put counters on our board while also being able to grow itself. Its feeble stat line usually is a drawback, but here it only means it's easier to duplicate this creature.</p>

<h2>Sacrifice Subtheme</h2>

<p>As I said at the beginning of the article, there are many strategies you can build around when creating your own list. Mine develops a self-sacrifice theme. In particular, I built it around cards such as <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Corrupted Conviction" href="#" target="_blank">Corrupted Conviction</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> and <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Not Dead After All" href="#" target="_blank">Not Dead After All</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>. In this way, you can use your creatures for value, get them back and also get two additional copies of them.</p>

<p>Repeatable sacrifice outlets are particularly good, as they make chaining creatures even easier. <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Evolutionary Leap" href="#" target="_blank">Evolutionary Leap</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> brings us from one creature to the next with no effort, making sure we both have sacrifice fodder and a sacrifice outlet. <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Ashnod&#039;s Altar" href="#" target="_blank">Ashnod&#039;s Altar</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> is a classic staple, giving us two colorless mana for each creature we sacrifice, which is never a bad rate. Finally, <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Greater Good" href="#" target="_blank">Greater Good</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> transforms creatures into cards so that we never run out of gas.</p>

<p>In the typal synergies department, it's all about recursion and additional triggers.</p>
<p><span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Unbury" href="#" target="_blank">Unbury</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Raise the Draugr" href="#" target="_blank">Raise the Draugr</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> and <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Return from Extinction" href="#" target="_blank">Return from Extinction</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> all allow us to recover our fallen Oozes, which we are more than happy to see (and sacrifice) again.</p>
<p><span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Haunted One" href="#" target="_blank">Haunted One</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Patriarch&#039;s Bidding" href="#" target="_blank">Patriarch&#039;s Bidding</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> and <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Haunting Voyage" href="#" target="_blank">Haunting Voyage</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> go a step even further, making sure our creatures come back to the battlefield ready to fight over and over again.</p>
<p>Finally, <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Roaming Throne" href="#" target="_blank">Roaming Throne</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> and <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Reflections of Littjara" href="#" target="_blank">Reflections of Littjara</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> are insane value engines, doubling up on creatures and/or permanents to overwhelm our opponents with our board state.</p>

<p>This past weekend during Gen Con, Wizards of the Coast revealed the contents of <em>Mystery Booster Commander Edition</em>, a new Mystery Booster product only obtainable during MagicCon events (and in Festival in a Box products to come). This reveal showcased a total of 60 new Commander-legal legendary cards, all usable as commanders. Let's look at all of these awesome cards!</p>
<h2><em>Mystery Booster Commander Edition</em> New White Cards</h2>

<p>There are (at least!) two important things to note with these new reveals. One is that there is an absolute glut of new planeswalker commanders. This will surely make Superfriends decks very happy. The second thing is that there are so many deep cuts in the lore among these cards that the diehard lore fans (or, as they prefer, "Vorthoses") are already going mad over this release. But in the meantime, let's move on with blue!</p>

<p>There are eight cards in this subset from the release that have the "rulebreaker" mechanic. Tolabow, Loch Rascal was revealed early on, and there was some confusion about how it actually works. <p>There was for a long time an issue with getting Brandon Sanderson's <em>Magic</em> novel, <em>Children of the Nameless</em>, out to readers. I am unsure if that still stands, but <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Miss Highwater" href="#" target="_blank">Miss Highwater</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> is a character from that novel, which bodes well for the book itself, because it's an excellent read.</p>

IDW Comics had the rights to Sifa, just like they had the rights to <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Dack Fayden" href="#" target="_blank">Dack Fayden</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>. Things must have changed!</p>
<p>The other card in question, Tsagan, Raider Warlord, is from the Alchemy format on <em>Magic: The Gathering Arena</em>! There is hope, people!</p>
